Plaxico Burress heading to Pittsburgh, may sign with Steelers

Plaxico Burress may have finally found a new team. His first team.

ESPN’s Adam Schefter reports that Burress, who has been hoping all year to sign a free agent contract with someone but has so far found no takers, is expected to go to Pittsburgh to take a physical for the Steelers. According to Schefter, the Steelers likely wouldn’t arrange a physical unless they intended to sign Burress.

PFT has confirmed that Burress’s workout is set for Tuesday.

The Steelers could use another receiver, with Antonio Brown slowed by a sprained ankle and Jerricho Cotchery suffering an injury on Sunday night against the Ravens.

Pittsburgh chose Burress with the No. 8 overall pick in the 2000 NFL draft, and he played his first five years in the NFL with the Steelers. He then signed with the Giants in 2005 and played four years there before spending two years in prison for illegally possessing a firearm. After getting out of prison, he played last season for the Jets.

The 35-year-old Burress has said all year that he was staying in good shape and would be ready to play for any team that was willing to give him a chance. He may have finally found that team in Pittsburgh.

    The Steelers don’t need a WR–they need a QB.

Congratulations to Plaxico Burress. I hope he plays well.

  3. steelmeats says: Nov 19, 2012 6:04 PM

Has burress been working on his spiral during the season? We need a QB not a receiver

  4. ancylostoma says: Nov 19, 2012 6:08 PM

Probably Cotchery injury is worst than it looks

  5. iloveflorio says: Nov 19, 2012 6:08 PM

Denny Dixon would probably been signed but the ravens signed him to their practice squad last week.

  8. chattanola says: Nov 19, 2012 6:11 PM

Maybe Plaxico isn’t exactly what they need, but it sure won’t hurt to add him to the team. I pulling for him to make the squad and do well.

The Steelers can come up with fresh plays for _______ (QB) with Plaxico in mind giving the advantage of a new look.

With Big Ben down, they need all the help they can get.

Time for Palko to come home!

  12. tpa43 says: Nov 19, 2012 6:16 PM

The Ravens may just dump Dixon. I’m sure they just signed him and gave him money to help them learn more about the Steelers Offensive playbook.

  13. brenenostler says: Nov 19, 2012 6:17 PM

Sweet, hope it goes well for them.

  15. filthymcnasty1 says: Nov 19, 2012 6:19 PM

Might as well give it a shot.

  16. coltzfan166 says: Nov 19, 2012 6:19 PM

But I thought he “wanted nothing more” than to play for the Eagles?

  17. readysethike says: Nov 19, 2012 6:19 PM

what qb will they bring in to replace Leftwich? Charlie Batch will not get it done against the Ravens atleast

  18. clevelandschronic2 says: Nov 19, 2012 6:20 PM

I hoped the guy would get another chance jus not in the afc north. Especially with the steelers again and a week before they play my brownies. Ooo well hope he does well jus not this week

  19. skiss68 says: Nov 19, 2012 6:22 PM

Booooo Hooooo the Steelers have injury problems. My heart goes out to them. Go Browns.

  20. tomthebombtracy says: Nov 19, 2012 6:24 PM

Plax would have looked good on the fade route in the red zone they tried to do on third and 2 last night.

Popular player while here…would be welcome in the locker room…that is if there is anyone in the locker room from when he was first there.

Overlooked in the hub-bub of why they didn’t bring Batcn last night is the knowledge that if got hurt they’d have no one to prep for Cleveland…no one. It is a 16 game season and the road is still doable to make the playoffs.

Dixon signing on a practice squad means nothing….any team can sign any other’s PS player.

  21. packerbackernj says: Nov 19, 2012 6:25 PM

Tommy Maddox is lookin for a job.

  22. justintuckrule says: Nov 19, 2012 6:39 PM

Jeez….the one name everyone somehow overlooks who we haven’t heard from in quite awhile.

    Bretholomew J. Favre.

  23. nockinon7sdoor says: Nov 19, 2012 6:39 PM

Dixon would not be much help regarding the Steelers playbook since they have changed OCs since Dixon was with the team. And if the Steelers want Dixon, they are free to sign him off of the Ravens practice squad. The Steelers would have to put him on their active roster if they signed, which would mean dropping someone off that roster.

  24. rajbais says: Nov 19, 2012 6:41 PM

About time!!! He’s had to wait for too long!!!

Then again, his ex-coach Ken Whisenhunt should have signed him!!!

More receivers with many bad linemen is not a bad panacea for an incomplete offense.

  25. skoobyfl says: Nov 19, 2012 6:42 PM

Who’s going to pass to him, the wind-up telegraph machine?

  26. jeffa43 says: Nov 19, 2012 6:42 PM

    1. Losing brown and cotchery we need a temporary wr. It is a good signing.

    2. We need to sign another qb today. Dixon would be great, Gerrard would also be good for a 2 to 3 game fill in.

Make the playoffs and look fwd to round3 with Balt.

  27. steelersownyou says: Nov 19, 2012 6:51 PM

My god my steelers are falling apart. Did any of you see antonio brown laughing it uo with ed reed on the sidelines while cotchery lay on the field hurt? Not to mention while we were losing!!! And ryan clark over in the ratbirds locker room after the game laughing and goofing off with ed reed? They dont care about losing! I lost a lot of respect for them guys. They just lost the most crucial game of the year and didnt even care! Just a money making job. They dont care about winning or losing. Sad day in steelers history! Could you picture lynn swann or joe greene ever doing something like that?? NEVER!!!!!!!

  28. lowriderfxr says: Nov 19, 2012 6:55 PM

Good luck Plax! Just don’t shoot yourself in the foot, or anywhere else!

  29. amorybl says: Nov 19, 2012 6:58 PM

If you’re looking at Plex, why not Hines? At least he’d block. And he just waxed rhapsodic about how desperate he was to have one more crack at the Ravens. Well…here you are. The Steelers could really use you. C’mon, HINES.

  30. trollaikman8 says: Nov 19, 2012 7:06 PM

    Can he throw the rock?

  31. whatchutalkinabouthillis says: Nov 19, 2012 7:10 PM

This article made me think about Limas Sweed. Anyone else remember him? What a weird career!

  32. geezohman says: Nov 19, 2012 7:10 PM

I think they may bring back the fourth QB in training camp but not the Ohio state player, i think he went out west anyway. Bring back the Johnson guy, played with Tannehill i think.

I say use Heath Miller or Hines Ward for QB backup

  33. peytonsneck18 says: Nov 19, 2012 7:14 PM

leftwhich throwing motion looks like one of them old gi joes with the kung fu grip toys, when the arm is broke

  34. ErikW65 says: Nov 19, 2012 7:26 PM

Wonder if he’ll oversleep and miss the physical…

  35. noodlecbs says: Nov 19, 2012 7:28 PM

    He deserves another shot.

  36. nfl fan says: Nov 19, 2012 7:29 PM

Guess you don’t realize any team can sign any player from another team’s practice squad to their active roster.

  38. peytonwantsaflag says: Nov 19, 2012 7:32 PM

Man, Tomlin really doesn’t want to play batch does he?

  39. micahernst says: Nov 19, 2012 7:37 PM

Interesting move. I agree with some others that Hines Ward would have more to contribute but he probably doesn’t want to screw up his TV “career”.

Even before the Ben injury the Steelers were woefully prepared at backup QB. They don’t need to sign a QB right now, its pretty much too late for that. I’d take at least a week to learn the offense and I imagine Ben will be back after the Ravens game. They do need to pickup someone in the offseason though. What about Vince Young?

  40. mtx1992 says: Nov 19, 2012 7:37 PM

Only if Randle El was still playing… at least he can throw a pass

  41. rockon1970 says: Nov 19, 2012 8:02 PM

Good pick up the man is hungry and humble right now I’ve spoke to him a few times he just wants a chance to show he can still play in this league. And you know Heath is going to be asked to block more with Ben out and we need a big target in the red zone. He will be big on 3rd downs also and people forget Hines taught him how to block watch some old highlights he’s a pretty good blocker.

  42. nepo784 says: Nov 19, 2012 8:29 PM

So Burress is going to play quarterback…

  43. runtheball says: Nov 19, 2012 8:29 PM

Dixon would not be much help regarding the Steelers playbook since they have changed OCs since Dixon was with the team.

Dixon didn’t know the playbook when he was with the team either.

Garrard would not be a bad pick up.

  44. rockon1970 says: Nov 19, 2012 8:54 PM

so you think were going to pick up a Q.B. and he’s going to learn the offense and start in a week or two …………

  45. blackngold4life says: Nov 19, 2012 9:03 PM

Those guys are a Brother Hood in the expect players to hate each other but it don’t work like that.. they leave the game on the field when its over. who cates

  46. tluke25 says: Nov 19, 2012 9:06 PM

I’m happy for Plex. That’s awesome. Having a tall sideline threat might open things up in the middle for our speedy receivers.

  47. pravin68 says: Nov 19, 2012 9:24 PM

Wouldnt Jerrod Johnson make the most sense to sign? He looked pretty good in preseason. Yeah, preseason. But that’s still better than other QBs out of a job for so long and have no familiarity with Haley’s offense. ANd dont even tell me Palko. Palko is flat out putrid.

  48. bornsteel62 says: Nov 19, 2012 9:37 PM

micahernst : I agree Stillers backup QB situation is a mess but VY would be a train wreck. Don’t kid urself, the BB injury is WORSE than anyone is letting on. May not play until wk 16 or 17 if then. The only logical signing is Jerrod Johnson, the rookie from TX A&M they had in camp & preseason. He played well. Is familiar with Haley. Is a big kid(6’5 250). I was shocked they didn’t sign him to the practice squad outta camp. gem in the rough.

  49. j0esixpack says: Nov 19, 2012 9:46 PM

As long as he doesn’t shoot himself in the foot – literally or figuratively – in his tryout he’ll likely be signed.

  50. timmy331 says: Nov 19, 2012 9:58 PM

Steelers need to stop getting these old QB’s , the are bang up and used up. make a deal with the Jets and Take Tebow. With the Steeler offensive line Tebow may Shock the world hahahahaha

  51. juststeel says: Nov 19, 2012 11:18 PM

Welcome Plax, you are still a matchup problem for any team. Leftwich has been a huge waste of money the last three years, my grandma is in better shape. Still wondering, is the Steelers defense that good or the Ravens offense that bad. Ravens are lucky Ben was not playing, they will exit first game in playoffs.

  52. bensstinkyfingers says: Nov 19, 2012 11:37 PM

No joke, KDKA in pittsburgh, just reported Tim couch met with the steelers today, and will sign tommorrow pending a physical. Apparently he has been working out in Kentucky, and has recovered from a shoulder surgery a few years back. Wow, never saw that one coming, don’t think he can offer any help with the browns playbook this week but hey gotta be an improvement over batch.

  53. mwindle1973 says: Nov 20, 2012 12:23 AM

I don’t get it…he’s slow to pick up on offensive schemes and they only have 6 games left. Could they have possibly signed him just to run fade routes in the red zone?

  54. karla36 says: Nov 20, 2012 8:51 AM

Here come the Browns, here come the Browns, onward to victory, here come the Browns…

Anyone remember that song from the 80s?!

Love it and hope the Browns win on Sunday. On talk radio here in Pittsburgh, it seems as if a lot of people are looking past Browns to Ravens. I thought the Browns looked great on Sunday and I think they’re going to win this Sunday!!

  55. timmy331 says: Nov 20, 2012 10:00 AM

hitting the sauce a little early???? Browns are a division game and the Steelers are battling for Wild Card, they aren’t laying down for the Browns Plax is coming back, he owns the red zone, and the Steelers have 3 Quarterbacks coming in today , Tebow showed interest but he is hurt. it’s and honor to play for the Pittsburgh Steelers. Plus I don’t know why you people thing the Steelers are in bad shape, the friggin Ravens barely squeaked past out 2nd string injured QB. Plus Heath Miller is an outstanding Quarterback. yes Heath Miller was originally a Quarterback and they mad him a tight end because of his size. Steelers Win 4 in a row and lose1 division game and everyone now knows everything about football and probable only watch one game.
