Report: Steelers concerned Leftwich could be out a while

Getty Images

Florio suggested that the Steelers reach out to quarterbacks familiar with Todd Haley’s offensive stylings on Monday morning and the chances of that happening don’t actually look too bad.

Jason LaCanfora of reports that the Steelers fear that they will be without quarterback Byron Leftwich “a while” because of the rib and shoulder injuries Leftwich suffered in the 13-10 loss to Baltimore on Sunday night. Per LaCanfora, they expect to work out quarterbacks this week although there’s no word if Tyler Palko or Brodie Croyle are on the list.

All of that lends support to the notion that Ben Roethlisberger will miss another couple of weeks as a result of his own shoulder and rib injuries. In his Monday Morning Quarterback column for, Peter King spoke to a thorasic surgeon who said Roethlisberger could risk further damage by returning too soon. That doctor hasn’t examined Roethlisberger, so we can’t know what too soon might be in this case but there aren’t any indications that it will be in time for him to play in Week 12.

That would leave the Steelers with a wounded (and therefore possibly less effective after failing to set the world on fire Sunday) Leftwich, Charlie Batch or whatever might be behind door number three. Not exactly where you want to find yourself with only a one game lead in the Wild Card race.

The 2012 Steelers are starting to look like the 2011 Bears.

Cue Vince Young waiting by his phone–again.

It would probably make the most sense to sign Jerrod Johnson, as he was with the team throughout training camp and the preseason and at times looked better than both Leftwich and Batch. My guess is he’ll end up starting with how injury prone Batch is.

  4. jimmyhaffa says: Nov 19, 2012 12:32 PM

Why have a veteran like Charlie Batch on the roster if you have no plans of using him? Seems like a giant waste of money.

  5. steelerstom says: Nov 19, 2012 12:34 PM

I have no problem with Charlie just get someone in who can back him up. On the other hand I have just one question for Tomlin and Haley….why the hell would anyone in their right mind put Mendenhall on the field with Dwyer, Redmond and Barron Batch on the sidelines? RM is a dancer who will gain a yard lose a couple and run into the back of his own linemen. The other 3 I mentioned will hit the hole put their heads down and gain yacs and all will average more per carry than RM. did you see last night we were moving the ball with Dwyer 5 minutes or so to go and we were 1 and 10 on the 40 something of Baltimore. Then in comes RM a first down dance move and its 2 and 12 next thing you know we’re punting and then losing a game we surely should have won! Sick and tired of the dancer lets play the guys who gain yards….please!

I really wonder why Tomlin was so hesitant to go with Batch late in the game with Leftwich obviously hurt an incapable of hitting a pass that is would normally zip in there. Of course we all doubted his protecting Batch during Ben’s suspension and that paid off pretty damn well.

  7. edgarpoe2 says: Nov 19, 2012 12:37 PM

The way Ben Roethlisberger was vehemently jumping up and down on the sidelines (not too shabby for a guy close to imminent death by rogue ribs with one false move :D), I thought maybe he would have suited up for the second half.

Seriously, if Roethlisberger is as bad as people are saying he is, he shouldn’t be playing the role of the jumping cheerleader. He should be sitting somewhere nursing his “injury” back to health.

  8. bubbahotepp says: Nov 19, 2012 12:38 PM

Put Heath in as qb. Was All-State in high school, and would be being used a helluva lot more than he was Sunday night.

  9. southpaw2k says: Nov 19, 2012 12:39 PM

If the Steelers dig themselves in too deep of a hole while Ben is out, it might not be worth bringing him back before the end of the season. Everything I’ve read online about dislocated ribs indicated around six weeks’ time needed to recover, which would take up the rest of the season. Even if Ben tries coming back in four weeks, the Steelers could be out of the playoff picture by then.

Pittsburgh is in a horrible position as concerns winning the AFC North, but they’re currently in fairly decent position regarding a Wild Card slot.

After 11 weeks, they are up 2 games on every team in the AFC field not named Cincinnati – and Cincy would need to defeat the NFL’s number one-ranked defense as some key defensive players are getting healthy — plus win all tie-breakers.

Also, Indy looks like they lost a little steam – opening up a greater possibility of there being two Wild Card spots with which Pittsburgh can contend for.

My key concern: do NOT rush Ben back too soon. Rely on the defense, a solid special teams game and three-headed monster at RB. In short, allow our key people to get healthy and optimize the best 22 we can line up in the playoffs – and just play balls out for the Wild Card berth. In recently years, we’ve seen Lombardis go to multiple fifth and sixth seeds that get hot once the tournament commences (e.g., PIT in ’05, GBP ’10, NYG ’11).

  14. blackngold4life says: Nov 19, 2012 12:57 PM

Umm….Redman had a concussion.. and Barron Batch ain’t even in the topic..only reason they keep him is special teams..Only bad choice Tomlin and Haley made was not running the ball on that goal line situation when Wallace couldn’t pull in that corner fade. 2 plays to get 2 yards..easy!

  15. texastbones says: Nov 19, 2012 12:59 PM

Uh oh! Just when you thought Tyler Palko’s career was over.

  18. tjjohnson98 says: Nov 19, 2012 1:01 PM

Calling Kurt Warner would make more sense than calling Croyle or Palko… I’m sure he could roll out of bed and be better than either one of those guys.

  19. watermelon1 says: Nov 19, 2012 1:02 PM

Didn’t the Steelers sign Troy Smith in the offseason for a while? He might be able to get them by running the offense. Plus it would make for a very interesting side-story in the match-up in two weeks against the Ravens, who he played for.

  20. ilovefoolsball says: Nov 19, 2012 1:03 PM

    Trade for Tim. Tebow.

  21. dumbpollack says: Nov 19, 2012 1:04 PM

Maybe after they beat the Browns this week with their 3rd string qb Pat Shurmur will finally get “put down”. Holmgren made a great choice there. Thanks, Big Show…….for nothing!!!!

    Once again Tomlin gets out-coached…

Yet he’s never held accountable. As the man would say… “it is what it is.” That guy couldn’t coach his way out of Pop Warner. He just good on the mic and with the one liners. So is the Rock and the Rock is a crowd favorite too, I just dont want either of them “coaching” my team. Keep it up Mike and Vince McMahon can get you the intercontinental championship.

  23. milkmandanimal says: Nov 19, 2012 1:07 PM

Is this from when he rolled into the end zone after scoring a TD? Has Gus Frerotte given him a sympathy call yet?

  24. pravin68 says: Nov 19, 2012 1:17 PM

Is it too late to bring back Randle El and Hines Ward? At least they can catch balls thrown to them even if Ward is slow as hell. Plus Randle El can function as the third QB. Even last year, when Ward was not at his best, he was finding comfortable open spots on 3rd downs and made some big catches early in the season before he was phased out .

But OK, that’s not gonna happen. So in all seriousness , why was Jerrod Johnson not signed last week itself? He was decent in preseason, knows the system, and he would have given TOmlin the buffer neded to put Batch in the game in case both Batch and lefty got injured in the same game which is not improbable, let alone impossible.

  25. threedeep1998 says: Nov 19, 2012 1:22 PM

Why not roll with Batch? Guess there’s always David G too

What about Johnson reminds you of Dixon? Johnson is 6’5″ 250 pounds. Dixon is 6’3″ 200 pounds.

Dixon is a very thin scramber, Johnson is a huge pocket passer.

The Steelers can get John Skelton for cheap from the AZ Cardinals. Skelton has been partially trained in the Steelers old offensive system by their old offensive coordinator Whisenhut how has given up on Skelton being his instant savior to cover his years of neglect of the offensive line personnel and scouting and drafting of offensive linemen.

Skeltong is big with a big arm, but has never been properly trained and worked with by the Cards. But he can be had for cheap right now.

Time for Terry Bradshaw to suit up. He’s well rested by now.

  32. ducknichols50 says: Nov 19, 2012 1:52 PM

i thought leftwich looked a lot thinner than he has in the past. i honestly think he has some left in he tank when he’s healthy. its a tough situation to beat the ravens considering he hasnt started in 2-3 seasons. i was not unhappy with lefwich last night.

  33. thefiesty1 says: Nov 19, 2012 1:56 PM

Vince Young is ready to play. He may not follow the playbook but he wins. You want to win a few games or not? Give him a call, he’d be there for Tuesdays practice.

  34. jjackwagon says: Nov 19, 2012 2:13 PM

Two QBs down in two weeks spells O-line problems.
It won’t matter who is back there if they can’t protect him.

Much like the Bears last season saw their promising 7-3 record end up at 8-8 after a rash of injuries to their skill position players I fear the Steelers will follow the same path.

  38. harvestern says: Nov 19, 2012 2:27 PM

Considering the trade deadline has already passed, getting Skelton from Arizona is clearly not an option.

  41. rockon1970 says: Nov 19, 2012 4:17 PM

We just out played your boys with 3 pro bowlers on the bench and 2 starting offensive linemen out. The Ravens are overrated and will get knocked out by Pittsburgh in the playoffs like they always do!!!

outplayed the ravens you say? tell me again what the score was… and please dont talk about injuries. both teams are missing lots of key starters. but thats how it goes. so stop making excuses and accept the fact that the ravens won. see yinz in 2 weeks
