He WAS on the bench, he only came in for the PAT. Teams can only carry 46 players on game day. Somebody has to play.

He'll be back for the playoffs and this whole discussion will be moot.

As far as "running up the score," maybe the other team should be allowed to throw in the towel so the Patriots know when to stop playing? Or the Officials can impose a "mercy rule" like little league? We don't want to hurt anyone's feelings, right?

Bill Belichick knows more about football than every poster on this site combined.

I'm not a bitter Colts fan at all. We lost big. No matter the score, still just one loss. We've already tripled our win total from last year, and many winnable games ahead. Let me remind you, Colts are fielding a roster with 40 million of unusable cap space. Pretty damn good considering. Wait till next season when all that space is freed up. I don't have a problem with running up the score either, even passing on their last scoring drive. But had they just played to run the clock out, poor Mr Gronk wouldn't be looking at a 4-6 weeks vacation.

I don't know why all the pats fans are defending that cheat of a head coach. I'd be pissed if my best receiver was out the rest of the regular season when he didn't need to be anywhere near the field at all. It's only the smart thing to do. But keep saying it's the right call....

And please stop with the "Gronk is on the PAT team" comments. Yes, we get that. But with a coach like BB who does not stop no matter the score, you have to expect injuries to starters. That's part of who he is. So, Gronk got hurt after the Pats scored their 7th TD. If he had only been out there 5 times instead of 7, that injury probably doesn't happen. It's statistical. The longer you leave in starters, the greater risk for injury. It's not how I'd coach, but that's me. Personally, I am surprised Brady hasn't been hurt by a defense that gets chippy at the end of one of these blowouts, a late hit or something...But stop with the "he's on the PAT team" stuff, b/c he wouldn't have been out there if they weren't putting up 59 points. It has everything to do with the fact starters were still in till the bitter end. But that's BB and he's well aware of the risks.

Colts fan here. Before you automatically "thumbs down" me...Let me make this point. As a fan of the Colts, I am all too familiar with the Pats and BB. That said, this is how he plays. All out, all the time. I would be mad if he only did it to the Colts, because that would make him look petty and childish, but he does it TO EVERY TEAM they play when they can. So at least he is consistent. To me, it's risky. I gives the offense more reps, but opens them up to injuries. See Welker in 2009 for example. Didn't need to play, but BB had him in and he blew his ACL. Same goes for Gronk yesterday. He's a risk/reward coach. They never took their foot off the gas in 2007. They just got beat in the SB on a freak play. That's just the way he plays. It pisses other teams off, sure, and risks his players, but you can't argue with the results. Personally I would have pulled guys when it was clearly out of hand, but that's not BB. Step on their throats mentality. I loathe him as a football coach, but look at it this way. Had he been a WWII general, I'd have wanted to be under his command

"Yeah, I’m sure you’ll stop calling him Belicheat if he takes over your team and brings them to 5…….going on 6 SuperBowls.

I love the way people with losing teams can’t let that go. Every good team was doing it. He got caught by his old rat assistant.
“Oh, but he hasn’t won since he got caught!”

Right, cause being in the playoffs and going to 2 more SBs (beating out 30 other teams)really makes him a terrible coach. Better bring in Rex Ryan."

He's a helluva head coach, but how many Super Bowls does he win without Brady? I know that they won 11 with Cassel as a QB, but didn't they also get bounced in their first playoff game too?

Colts fans are not the people on here bashing the Pats for scoring 59 points.

So no, you are not hurting the Colts feelings, just making yourself look like a widdle boy.

Did anyone notice how the Saints pulled Brees after being up 2 scores with 5 minutes remaining? And they didn’t try to run up the score? That’s from a team who was in the Bounty Gate scandal, who is apparently still much much classier of a team that the Pats. What does that tell you?

It tells me that there are a lot of crybaby bitches out there.

Lets give little Johnny a trophy even if his pee wee football team goes 1-7!!

How come I didn't see you on here a few weeks ago when Aron Rogers threw 6 td's vs the Texans?

"Coaches have 45 active players each game. They don't have a "second team'' of the point-after-try unit. The PAT is one of the most risk-free plays in football. Rodney Harrison, the former Patriots safety now in the NBC studio with me on Sunday nights, didn't get taken off the kickoff team in routs. And Tony Dungy, who coached the Colts and Bucs, told me: "Jeff Saturday was my right guard on the PAT team, and I'd never think of taking him off. All my years in football, I never heard anyone, never heard Chuck Noll saying, 'Well, we better get Jack Ham off the PAT team.' It's not something I'd question."

So Dungy never changed out players on the PAT team either.

All of the Monday Morning Quarterbacks are funny. You do not, and I repeat do not, have the luxury as a coach to look into a crystal ball and say oh well he's going to break his forearm if we score 59 and have him blocking on PATs.

The New England Patriots do things their way and I respect that. Why should the Patriots close up shop just because their lead is big? You do not play to avoid injuries, you play to win the game at all costs.

This isn't the first rodeo for the regime in NE, just to let you know they have won three super bowls and have an undefeated season under their belts.

As a New York Giants fan I have seen two separate examples where the Giants had a 17 point lead in the fourt quarter and instead of continuing to play their game, they became complacent and lost thanks to a Desean Jackson punt return.

The other coming in Philadelphia a couple years back when the New York Giants overcame another 17 point lead with a late overtime touchdown to Plaxico Burress thanks to the Eagles feeling like the contest was over with 15 minutes left.

You play until the clock reads zeros across the board. Question it now but that's not how it goes in the NFL. There is a reason why we are writing on here and Bill B. and company is living it.

I'm not surprised how Pats fans are as classless as the team they're rooting for. Running up the score is always unsportsmanlike, from pee wee football to the pro level. If you don't understand that, you're not capable of doing so.

Did anyone notice how the Saints pulled Brees after being up 2 scores with 5 minutes remaining? And they didn't try to run up the score? That's from a team who was in the Bounty Gate scandal, who is apparently still much much classier of a team that the Pats. What does that tell you?

All of you that are defending Belicheck's move that its "standard" to have your TEs in on a PAT. Can you answer me this - was there a need to score 59 points to win that game? Its impossible to break your forearm on a PAT for the 59th point if you score 52...or even 45...either one still wins the game handily...ITS KARMA

Make all the excuses you want to. Gronk is out. WIth the game so well in hand why would you have the best TE in football and probably a top 5 offesive weapon not a QB in the game when you have brought in like, 10 TE's? Ego. Reminds me of Martz when he went over the ego cliff.

And we're back to the old crying about running up the score. For fans of a tough sport, football fans sure are whiners.

Patriots win by 6 against the Bills, so they suck. They win by 35 against the Colts, it's too much. So I guess they should get up by 21 and then kneel and punt every time, so they don't hurt the widdle Colts feelings.

I'm never surprised when cowards start chirping about Gronk still being in the game and doing his PAT duties. It's his job to play football, he got hurt, like so many others do every season. The same pinheads suggesting he get preferential treatment are tue ones first to complain when other players get special treatment.

It's obvious most of the fools commenting here have coached pee wee football and know nothing. A football team at the high school level and up has a kick off team, a punt return team, and an extra point team. When the score is 58-24 the coaches don't run around the sidelines asking, "ok, who hasn't played yet?". Get real. It was an accident. If coaches could see the future no one would ever get hurt.

anyone who complains about a team running up the score should just become a fan of a kids soccer team where everyone plays an equal amount of time and everybody wins no matter what team you play for!!!!

we will be fine without him and he will be back for the playoffs! count on it!

As a Colts fan watching the game I really wasn't upset that the Pats were running up the score. It still only counts as 1 loss. When my kid walked in the room and saw the score she asked why they were keeping their best players on the field, risking injury.

A little education for the masses:

The Injury came on an XP attempt - it is typical to have your blocking TE's in on these plays, there is typically no real danger of an injury.

I wonder how many roster members you think the Patriots carry on offense on gameday.

I'll give you a clue: it isn't enough to substitute/replace the whole offense.
