I too miss the days of head shots and clothes lines. Thing is I was watching them, and not suffering from their effects. The referees are having a hard time changing the game away from dangerous hits. That much is obvious. But if the game does not change it will cease to exist. The rule changes are a direct result of the law suits filed by previous players who have dementia and other issues directly caused by years of entertaining us as we sat on the sofa in amazement. I have read many posts on here about how terrible it is that the NFL does nothing for the players who made the game so popular in the first place. Well not only should they help those guys out it has a responsibility to not have generation after generation of crippled demented ex players. The change will be difficult and the refs calls will be criticized, just as all calls are, but there is no other choice. Not if you want any football at all.

Many commenters here are missing the point. Ronnie Lott loves hard hits as much as ever, and is making the point that hitting hard is fine as long as you do it properly. Watch the 49ers D and you'll see plenty of great tackling and vicious hits that fall well within the current rules.

Goodell is ruining the NFL. The NFL will be “safe” in next 5-10 years, but no one will want to watch.

It’s amazing that Goodell is destroying the thing he is charged to protect.

The Reed suspension is a complete joke. Helmet to helmet contact was incidental and non-intentional. Also, Reed’s other alleged dirty hits were over the course of 3 YEARS.

Goodell is a self-righteous d0-gooder grandstander. This is why many Saints fans doubt the “bounty” allegations. Goodell is more interested in grandstanding than, you know, the actual truth.

-----------------------------

Just one comment. "No one will want to watch."

Really? No one will want to watch? The NFL??? We will be watching the NFL in 5-10 years. I can assure you of that.

Who's going to stop watching? You? The other diehard fans who love the NFL so much they take the time to read daily news bits on websites about it and even comment on the posts after they read it?

And if your argument is that the average fan will not want to watch, that's even further from the truth. The average fan doesn't even know about the player safety issue. The average fan tunes in with their families and friends on Sunday to watch the games, root for their favorite teams, and have a great time doing it.

We who read these posts and comment on them are not the average fans. We are the diehards. We diehards aren't going anywhere. And the average fans certainly aren't.
