Only one man has ever thrown for more yards in an NFL game than the 527 that Texans quarterback Matt Schaub threw for last Sunday, which is all the explanation you need for why he has been named the AFC offensive player of the week.
Schaub’s day landed him in a tie for second place with Warren Moon on the all-time single game passing yards list. Norm Van Brocklin, who threw for 554 yards in a 1951 game, holds the record. Schaub’s 43 completions also land him in a tie for second place on that list with Rich Gannon behind Drew Bledsoe.
The Texans needed every one of Schaub’s yards to outlast the Jaguars 43-37 in overtime of a game that saw them down 14 points in the fourth quarter before two Schaub touchdown passes brought them back. The final 48 of his yards came on a game-winning touchdown pass to Andre Johnson, who had a pretty good case for the weekly honors himself after posting 273 yards on 14 catches. Schaub threw five touchdowns overall as the Texans improved to 9-1.
It’s the fourth time that Schaub has been the offensive player of the week and the first since 2010. Running back Arian Foster won it twice for the Texans in 2011.
