APAt the rate Steelers quarterbacks are falling, Brian Hoyer has no choice but get ready in a hurry.
So the former backup to Tom Brady is getting a crash course in the Pittsburgh offense, since he’ll be the backup to Charlie Batch this weekend.
“I’m going to be as ready as I can,” Hoyer said, via Ralph Paulk of the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review. “There’s limited time and limited reps, and you just have to study as much as you can and go from there.
“Things may be called differently or certain things like that. The terminology might be different, but you just have to figure it out and compare it to something that you’ve done in the past.”
With Ben Roethlisberger out with rib and shoulder injuries, and Byron Leftwich breaking two ribs in last week’s loss to the Ravens, Hoyer was signed to provide some emergency help.
“I’ll be there to help him the best I can,” Leftwich said. “I think he’s picking up things well based on what I’ve seen.
“I’m just hoping we don’t have to use him and that Charlie can get through this and find a way to win. If [Hoyer is] playing, then that means something has happened to Charlie. Hopefully he doesn’t have to play.”
Hoyer only got a few snaps with the first offense in practice, as most of time was doubtless spent learning a new language, while everyone around him hopes he doesn’t have to speak it.
