The Eagles have officially confirmed what was widely expected: Both quarterback Michael Vick and running back LeSean McCoy will sit out Monday night’s game against the Panthers as they continue to recover from concussions.
But while Vick is progressing and appears to be close to getting cleared to return, McCoy still has a long way to go.
Eagles head athletic trainer Rick Burkholder said today that Vick is in Phase 3 of the NFL’s five-stage protocol for recovery from concussions. That means Vick has been cleared to do cardiovascular workouts that get up to 80 percent of his target heart rate. Burkholder said Vick is likely to progress to Phase 4 by Sunday. After that he’s expected to see an independent neurologist next week.
McCoy, however, is still in Phase 1 of the program. Burkholder said McCoy is having headaches, is very fatigued and is having trouble sleeping. McCoy isn’t even able to go to team meetings yet, let alone practice. So it may be a while before McCoy plays again.
Nick Foles will start at quarterback on Monday night and Bryce Brown will start at running back
