Reid touts Castillo for head-coaching jobs

AP

Last month, Eagles coach Andy Reid fired defensive coordinator Juan Castillo.  Now, Reid is trying to get Castillo hired.

To be a head coach.

Reid’s remarks specifically came in the context of an opening at UTEP, but Reid was sufficiently broad in his remarks to allow them to apply to any head-coaching job, at any level of the sport.

He would do a great job.  He would be the mayor of El Paso,” Reid said of Castillo, via Tim McManus of PhillyMag.com.

“He would do a phenomenal job.  I was hoping for him because I think he’d be a good head coach.  He had a chance at that the last time [the UTEP job was open].  He and I actually went down and worked out a couple players there once, so he knows the area.  He’d be great.”

He wasn’t great as a defensive coordinator.  Then again, some Eagles fans already have grown nostalgic for the performance of the defense under Castillo.

  1. Ok Andy, that makes sense. Lets use him as our scapegoat since it was obviously his fault that the team was under performing (sarcasm), then turn around and promote him as a head coach after you and your staff had him fired. I see an ESPN job in your near future.

  2. since Jim Johnson passed away the Eagles defense has never been successful. which is sad because I like a challenge, being a Redskins fan.

  3. This is where Andy betrayed the owner’s trust and went a long way towards getting himself fired. When the defensive coordinator job came open Jeffrey Lurie trusted Andy to hire the best person for the position. Instead Andy used it as an opportunity to hook up one of his scumbag friends.

Reid has only himself to blame when he’s gone at the end of the season.

  4. Andy isn’t exactly well-qualified to know what a good head coach looks like. If he said someone was mediocre and going into a favorable position of weak opponents for the next decade and a half, I’d believe him then.

    Marcus??

  6. He wasn’t great as the D coordinator??? Really? When you look at the difference between having him and not having him you really have to start wondering about that. Sure, the Eagles werent in the top five, but its really looking like that was never an option. It increasingly looks like he was getting as much out of them as they were giving.

All the complaints at the time about how Namdi was being used are starting to look completely different.

  7. Am I missing something…Big Red fires Juan as DC then suggests him as head coach??? Just when I thought the Eagles’ season couldn’t get more bizarre…thanks for the memories, Andy!

  8. Marty morningwood would make a great head…oops, wait a minute. Schwartz may have made a mistake, but nothing that compares to winning a coin toss in OT then defering so he could “take the wind.” Never mind the fact that the defense hadn’t stopped anyone the entire game and…well…we all know what happened next.

  9. A while back, some Eagles’ ticket holders told me that if the season went in vain, they were going to hold a “dozen egg night” at their next game. Looks like it’s going to be pretty soon (Monday Night).

  10. You so called fans have been spoiled for way to long. Andy is a Great coach and will turn this around. I don’t beleive he will be fired, I think Jeffery L. is much smarter than you idiots and will give Andy a chance to fix the problems. Wait and see!!!
