Ray Rice’s remarkable fourth down conversion leads Ravens and Chargers to OT

Baltimore Ravens v San Diego Chargers Getty Images

When you say “fourth-and-26″ to an Eagles fan, you’ll hear a rare mention of Freddie Mitchell that doesn’t use him as a punchline.

Mention “fourth-and-29″ to Chargers coach Norv Turner and you might not get such a happy memory. That’s what the Ravens faced on the first play after the two-minute warning in the fourth quarter and Turner likely thought he’d get a win when Joe Flacco checked down to running back Ray Rice. Rice wound up figuring out a way to get the ball past the marker after a long run, however, and the Ravens had life.

Or so they thought. The play went up to the booth for a review and replays showed that the initial spot was quite generous. Referee Gene Steratore decided the ball needed to be spotted again, but this spot also brought them a first down. It also seemed a bit generous, but Rice’s effort stood and Justin Tucker hit a field goal as time expired to send the game to overtime.

Per the Red Zone channel, that’s the longest fourth down conversion in the NFL in 11 years and it is one that keeps the Ravens’ hopes of extending their AFC North lead to three games. The Chargers might not like the spot, but they had other chances to stop the Ravens on the final drive and couldn’t get it done.

Ray Rice running like he had a load in his pants, gets 29 yards. The chargers are so bad.

Was the block on the 4th down play by Boldin one of the new illegal ones? he was moving toward his own end zone not downfield.

And Mike Wallace sux! Cut him.

Awful D by Chargers on that play, great effort by Ray Rice (by the way really dumb dump off by Flacco even though Rice bailed him out), and two ridiculously bad spots by refs. First they put it @ just inside 33, then after about 10-15 minutes of replay reviews (or so it seemed while we were all waiting), it should have been spotted just inside 35. Instead they backed it up, but kept it inside 34. Incredible. The Chargers never should have made it that close, but the refs need to be better than this as this will be the 2nd game this weekend with outcomes likely changed due to refs calls (see Hou @ Det)

Weddle was destroyed by a blatant, obvious block in the back on that play, and no call. These refs are terrible.

  8. thekiller678 says: Nov 25, 2012 7:40 PM

Blame the refs all you want but the fact Rice even got that close to the first down not only sums up the Chargers 2012 season… but the entire Norv-Rivers era.

Should have been flagged for either a block in the back or blindside block by Boldin. Same exact thing Josh Gordon was flagged for during Browns v Ravens game 2 this year.

  12. grogansheroes says: Nov 25, 2012 7:51 PM

    And this is Norv’s epitaph.

  13. jkaflagg says: Nov 25, 2012 7:54 PM

Rice’s knees are clearly down right on the 35 yard line; physically impossible for him to have the ball extended inside the 34…..but in defense of the refs, I never saw a replay that definitively showed where the ball should be placed, so they had to stick with the bad spot on the field……certainly never a replay that even suggested he got inside the 34. The Chargers have long been the masters of pulling a defeat from the jaws of victory, but they really got jobbed on this one…..

  31. mike7948 says: Nov 25, 2012 8:15 PM

Are you people seriously questioning the spot? Maybe the original was a little off but he was easily inside the 35 yd line, his knee hit around the 35yd line, the ball was much further up. There was no doubt that was a legit first down. Now the block by Anquan, that’s questionable. I am not entirely sure what the rule is for a block on the side, it could’ve been called though.

Question the block maybe, but there is no questioning that spot, that was obviously a first down.

The Ravens have been getting the short end of the refs calls for years. What comes around goes around. Bottom line was that SD didn’t do squat during the second half.

Quietly, the Ravens defense has gotten much better. Still not at the level of the old days, but much better.

Name 5 players that have more heart than Ray Rice. Dude is incredible.

For all the Squealer fans who were talking trash about how we were going to lose this game and then they would finish us up next week, well…. there always is next year. You are now 3 full games behind the Ravens and unless Jen makes a marvelous recovery have almost zero chance of winning next week. Think about it. If the Ravens win next week at home, they will be 10 – 2 and the Squealers will be 6-6. It is almost too good to think about.

See you next week Steeler ladies and gentlemen. Ravens roost at the top of the AFCN again.

Everyone crying about the refs being for the Ravens aren’t paying attention. They’re one of the most penalized teams in the league. The real truth of the game is that Baltimore’s beaten, battered defense manned up and held Rivers to 13 on his own field. Refs didn’t do that.

  37. mike7948 says: Nov 25, 2012 8:20 PM

That’s right the ravens are the refs favored team, you know the ravens, the team with the 7th most penalties in the NFL.

It is nice to be so good the only excuse opponents have is “it was the refs” it couldn’t be the qb who has the most wins EVER to start a career. No, that would be logical thinking.

  40. ampatsisahypocrite says: Nov 25, 2012 8:22 PM

When you think about it, this play sums up everything about Ravens football:

    1. Flacco stands around and does nothing

    2. Rice does all the work

    3. Ravens fans actually think they’ve witnessed greatness

If Ravens fans had either a clue or common sense, they’d be roasting Flacco right now for getting away with dumping off on 4th and 29.

  41. johnnycamparm says: Nov 25, 2012 8:39 PM

So apparently 5’8″ Ray Rice defies the laws of physics… He magically can stretch his torso 4.5 feet when faced with impossible tasks… Did the NFL purchase their footballs from the same guy who sold Jack his beanstalk beans?

  42. everybodyholdsorakpo says: Nov 25, 2012 8:45 PM

Not a ravens or charger fan, so it really doesn’t matter to me. But those of you trying to defend that spot that gave the ravens an extra yard for a 1st down are just blind or you are trying to talk yourself into it. His knee was down short of the 35, the ball was just over the 35 at about the 34 and 3/4 mark. They actually spotted it 2 yards wrong initially, then missed it again on the replay. Amazing how the ball could be put where it was after replay. Chargers got robbed, ravens lost and everyone that really looks at the replay would agree. I hate to see a team lose like that.

  43. thestrategyexpert says: Nov 25, 2012 8:52 PM

The refs took forever to make the call, and then didn’t even come close to getting the ball in the right spot. They couldn’t even describe where they were putting the ball when they specifically stated it would be at the half yard line and that wasn’t even accurate either.

The league is a joke when it comes to officiating. They took too long, got the ball spotted in the wrong spot, declared a different spot than where they did spot it, and then had a measuring stick snafu. It was really sloppy work as part of also a sloppy system that does not work well.

  44. sc5000 says: Nov 25, 2012 9:04 PM

  46. imbrue001 says: Nov 25, 2012 9:30 PM

  48. ambitoos says: Nov 25, 2012 9:45 PM

To SC5000. There was no luck there. The Chargers really are that bad. My god, we’ve become the Raiders.

  49. koenig61 says: Nov 25, 2012 10:02 PM

Not a chargers fan, so no dog in this fight, however, that spot was awful. Ray rice is listed at 5’8″ tall. His knee hit just prior to the 35 yard line, and his torso was bent, as was the arm holding the ball. In other words ball was chest high. So you have to figure from the ground to rays knees is at least 2 feet, that leaves 3’8 inches to the top of his head. Now factor in the ball as at shoulder level, the ball at best would have been 3 feet from the 35 yard line, that means 34 max. The spot was 33 1/2 yard line. Awful spot. Not to mention the refs allowed the flags to be moved prior to measurement, so how can the flags be repotted to their original position?

As for the boldin block, if that’s Hines ward of the steelers, and he makes that same block, 100 ravens fans are posting on here what a cheap shot, illegal block it was.

But give the ravens their due, the refs blew two calls, and the ravens took advantage of it.

  50. guitarkevin says: Nov 25, 2012 10:04 PM

To all the Flacco haters, go back and look at the key throws in the final quarter and OT. No average Joe makes those throws.

  51. cags777 says: Nov 25, 2012 10:15 PM

Amazing plays from Ray Rice. It was an ugly win, but they pulled it off. Congrats!

  52. polychronopolous says: Nov 25, 2012 10:17 PM

    koenig61,

The refs called a “leading with the helmet on a defenseless receiver” on Pollard when replay showed the pass was uncatchable and he led with the back of his shoulder. That led to a SD field goal.

On offense Marshall Yanda was called for a hold that didn’t happen. That stalled a Ravens drive when they were in field goal range.

You didn’t see the Ravens making excuses. They found a way to win, like they always do. What’s the matter. You can’t troll on Browns forums tonight?! Did they embarrass you that bad?

  53. polychronopolous says: Nov 25, 2012 10:20 PM

    everybodyholdsorakpo,

Losers make excuses, winners win. That was a first down. Give it a rest. The Chargers got blatant calls in their favor that led to points.

    Polychronopolous says:

I’m not sure why you assumed I was a steelers fan, other than I compared boldins hit to Hines ward? I’m not a steelers fan, but I do live in an area where they play the steelers games on TV, so yes I do see them a lot, but I’m not a fan. I’m a football fan, and I read all of the stories on here, and when I see a article on a game I’ve seen, than I comment. I saw the rice play, and I posted my observations on his knee, his height, and where they spotted the ball.

In my opinion the steelers and ravens teams are very much alike, as are their fans. Fans of both teams it seems hate the other for the exact same plays their own players make. Ward, boldin, pollard, Clark, Lewis, Harrison etc.

Complain about the refs all you want, but that was 100% Rice making something out of nothing. I’ve got news for you, if you have to quibble about whether a runner got 28 or 29 yards on a 4th down check-down, you’ve already lost the argument. The Chargers D had no business letting him even get that close. The Ratbirds did what they needed to do to win, and the Chargers found yet another way to lose. Give credit where it’s due.
