Steelers place Marcus Gilbert on IR, activate David DeCastro

AP

The Steelers offensive line has been a patchwork job since the summer and the job got a little harder on Sunday.

Left guard Willie Colon was scratched just before the game, forcing Doug Legursky into the lineup. The depth was stretched even further when Mike Adams went down with an ankle injury.

That left them with Kelvin Beachum at right tackle and without many options in reserve with original right tackle Marcus Gilbert already out with his own ankle injury. We don’t yet know the status of either Colon or Adams, but the Steelers have shuffled their roster to leave themselves prepared to deal with his absence. Gilbert has been placed on injured reserve and the team has activated first-round pick David DeCastro from injured reserve.

DeCastro has been out since injuring his knee in the preseason, but he returned to practice last week and has been eligible to return from IR for a few weeks. He was expected to be the team’s right guard this season and could wind up back in that job with the versatile Ramon Foster plugging a hole elsewhere.

Gilbert has been out since Week Six. The 2011 second-round pick will be in the mix for a starting job again next season.

The Steelers also promoted offensive lineman John Malecki to the active roster and released wide receiver David Gilreath.

  1. Adams has been a failure all year. Can’t block without Heath helping him. Beacheam is a better blocker than Adams allllllll day. Decastro is an upgrade to “Holding penalty” on Colon. Both moves are upgrades. Now, we need to get Ben back and release batch and leftwich.

i think decastro is going to be a beast in the nfl, and a perennial pro bowler.
    ———————————————————-

Sure, why not? He looked great in those two preseason games he has under his belt.

  3. If you think DeCastro will be a beast, you must not have seen any of the preseason. He was good in the Pac 12, but he’s now in the AFC North. I doubt he’ll be able to push around Ngata, Atkins and Taylor like he did all those wimpy Pac 12 defenses.

  4. When exactly was DeCastro lighting it up? He was getting pushed around before being injured. Steve Hutchinson reincarnation, hah! That’s laughable.

So by that logic, no player from college will ever be good because he’ll have to face top-level pros. Like they said how Ngata won’t succeed because he’ll have to face the tough OLs in the North rather than the “wimpy Pac 12.” Wow, you’re a real Einstein there.

  6. Coltswerestolen,

The point was both are from the Pac10/12 so if Ngata can make it, DeCastro can’t be ruled out for playing in the PAc 10/12.

Also the Colts weren’t stolen. The colts owner chose to take his business elsewhere. Probably didn’t like living in the murder capital.

  7. This guy is gonna be a beast! I don’t know how people will get after Big Ben, or Byron Leftwich, or Charlie Batch with the mighty David Decastro in the lineup…. Hahahaha the steelers o line is in shambles! They just activated a rookie OL that has no business playing this season! Next quarterback up!

  8. Ravens will win the AFC north but we all know they won’t go far. Yes, the wont have to worry about losing the the Steelers as they always do in the playoffs, but Ed is never going to win a ring (Troy has 2) and Ray Ray will have to live with 1 in 17 years. T Fizzle is living up to his name.

  9. Steelers: 2-1 in superbowls since Purple browns moved from Cleveland.

ravens: 1-0 since being stolen from Cleveland. 0-3 v. Pittsburgh in postseason.

  10. Desperate activation? Desperate as in “keeping an over the hill middle line backer on the roster as a cheerleader! “Come On Ray, have some dignity. Your time has long passed, along with any level of grit The Ravens defense had.

Maybe The Steelers are struggling mightily without their quarterback, but at least they still resemble a physical team.

  11. Ray Lewis is on injured reserve. He is not on the roster and is not taking up a slot that could be filled by another player.

This is the NFL Cbass; what have you done lately?

  12. Over-rated and over-hyped Ravens lie in fear of chance of Ben playing this weekend. The barely beat a severely injured Steeler squad and they know it. Reality is the Steelers have a tough road ahead due to injuries, but if they do make the playoffs and are healthy they likely run the table. Meanwhile, the Ravens have everybody and are barely winning, although they are winning. That won’t happen in the playoffs, where they are perrenial losers. Enjoy you in-season Super Bowls now chumps. Steelers savor the real ones.

  13. Steelernator,
you do realize that we do well at M&T Bank and yes we have struggled this year on the road. YEs we barely beat your team in your house. The game wont be that close in our house.
Look at our offensive and defensive stats at home this year compared to road. Good Luck hoping the stars align for you guys to make the playoffs this year.

BTW DeCastro will be a great player for some time if his college yrs are any indication.

  14. Honestly, I was pulling for The Ravens last year to win it all. This is hard to even utter, being a die Hard Pittsburgher. If The Ravens actually won a Championship, in the Flacco era, it would give the AFC North more credibility. Let’s be honest here people, The Steelers still do the heavy lifting around here. Don’t kid yourselves Baltimore!

Ha! Randy Flagg owned yet again and exposed for the cretin that he is.

  16. Re: desperate team

Yes, the Steelers are desperate and made a desperate move. That’s sign of a well-run organization.

What, they were supposed to hang out behind the gym and smoke some cigarettes, looking cool?

In the NFL you fight for every game and sometimes it works out.
