Eagles cut Jason Babin

AP

DeSean Jackson isn’t the only player who has played his final game for the Eagles this season.

The team announced that they have cut defensive end Jason Babin. The news comes as something of a surprise, although Babin wasn’t expected to remain with the team after this season. He signed a five-year, $27.725 million contract with the team before last season, more than $16 million of which was set to come in the next three years.

Babin made good on that deal with 18 sacks last season, but, like many other Eagles, his play has gone sharply south this year. He has 5.5 sacks this year and seen his playing time cut as a result. He’s also gone public with his dislike for what’s coming out of the mouths of Eagles fans during home games, leading to a rebuke from former Eagles linebacker Jeremiah Trotter.

“We appreciate everything that Jason has given this team over the last couple of years. We wish him all the best as he continues his career,” coach Andy Reid said in a statement released by the team. “By releasing him today, this gives us an opportunity to give more playing time to some of younger guys in the defensive line rotation.”

Second-round pick Vinny Curry is one of the young players who should see a boost with Babin out of the picture. He was active for the first time this season on Monday night against Carolina.

While Babin has underperformed this season, a team headed to the playoffs might take a shot on claiming him off waivers, or signing him once he clears, in hopes of boosting their pass rush. He’s picked up sacks in each of the last two weeks and, as mentioned, isn’t far removed from a season with plenty of them.

  1. what a cancer he is. Don’t look at the 18 sacks he had last year because they are the most hollow Sacks you will ever see in football.he’s a selfish 1 trick pony that doesn’t do anything but run big circles around to the quarterback and that’s it. What a cancer.good riddance

  2. Bye Bye Babin! I guess you’ll blame the fans for this to. Maybe you were more of a professional and stopped making excuses for your poor play you might still have a job. Instead you are to busy arguing and blaming the fans and selling T-Shirts on game day. What a joke Babin is and as an Eagle fan I am so glad he is gone. I was saying this summer Eagles should trade him and everyone was calling me crazy. To bad they didn’t trade him because now they can’t get anything for the bum.

  3. Whoever gets this guy is one lucky team. He has proved when motivated (18 sacks last year) that he is lethal. He has some serious attitude problems but the team getting him could be getting a steal.

  4. Here is the problem with Babin…if he isn’t getting sacks, he is useless. Furthermore, he is only effective in getting sacks playing the “Wide 9” style. To recap, he can’t play the run and only gets sacks playing a specific style that few teams play.

  5. I doubt anyone picks him up.

He is a wide 9 gimmick player. Cant play the run, and ends up as a zero on the statsheet more often than not.

5 times this season he has played 75% of the snaps, and ended up with zero sacks and zero or one tackle.

Absolutely not acceptable for an NFL DE

  6. I see this as Andy doing Babin a favor. There’s a good chance he’ll get picked up by some team that isn’t circling the toilet with a chance for him staying with that team next year.

  7. With Eagles moving OL Coaches to D Coordinators, I’m surprised they didn’t try to make Babin their new starting LT before releasing him…

  8. With Jermaine Cunningham suspended for PED’s there’s an opening for a DE up north in New England.

    Make it happen Belichick!

  9. Hi, Jason? Mike Tannenbaum here, New York Jets. Got a second? Heard you have $1.65 million left. Any chance we could triple that and extend you to 2015?

  10. Basin got all those sacks at the expense of playing the run, which he didn’t care about. Teams caught on quick as they do in the NFL and ran right at him. With his attitude, I hope he gets claimed by a team that has no shot at the playoffs.

  11. This guy… rushing the QB on the opposite side of the line from Terrell Suggs?

Might be the piece they need to finally beat Peyton Manning in a couple weeks!

  12. I understand that he pissed a lot of Philadelphia Eagles fans off, but the St. Louis Rams or Detroit Lions might want to take a look at him for a possible playoff run.

They both run the Wide 9.

  13. At this point the Eagles are writing this season off now and are looking to play the younger kids. The wide-9 is done in Philly. By pulling the trigger on this move during the season, does anyone can the Eagles take a cap hit on the signing bonus, whatever it might be, right now instead of next year? Last I heard the Eagles were $20 under the cap for this season but were projected to be tight next year.

  14. They need to clean out the dead weight. When you cut a guy who had 18 sacks the year before you send a strong signal to the rest of the team. See who steps up the last 5 games and shows us something. I hope N.Assfaceumwa is next. I’m tired of his crying. Oh and Vick getting cut would be like an early present.

  15. Maybe the raiders could pick him up if he clears waivers??? Couldn’t hurt our non-existent pass rush

  16. Finally! A one trick pony that doesn’t do his one trick any more needs to be sent to the glue factory.

  17. I give the Eagles credit. Why should any team stand by and watch any player play with such apathy. They show that by cutting supposedly one of their best players.

If only my Cowboys had that much balls…

  18. People love to look at his 1 ‘good’ season last year. Look at the tapes of those games though, the guy was getting sacks during NON critical parts of the game. He is the Bobby Abreu of the Eagles, or WAS, good riddance. He was a soft defensive player that never embodied what defense really means to the city of Philadelphia. Another mistake mercenary move the Eagles made.

  19. “This guy… rushing the QB on the opposite side of the line from Terrell Suggs?”

    ————————————————
As if teams aren’t already running all over the Ravens.

  20. Vinny Curry instantly becomes one of the ‘best DEs in football’. Booyah, Dream Team 2.0 does it again.

  21. The way he got pushed around this year shows you where his career is heading. He is a pass rushing specialist, but he cannot play the run at all. Any team that gives him the kind of contract Philly gave him would be out of their minds. His was a big part of Philly’s inability to stop the run.

BTW, can we start blaming Howie Roseman for some of these bonehead signings at the worst possible time (lockout-shortened off-season). He was the one that created this nightmare. I feel Babin being cut is only the start of a major house cleaning.

  22. “Make it happen Belichick!”

Absolutely no chance Belichick brings him in. Belichick doesn’t play guys that refuse to defend against the run (it’s why Arrington has started for so long although Dennard seems to have finally replaced him) Babin is a liability against the run and the team that brings him in should only give him snaps in obvious passing situations.

Plus Babin has only had success in the wide nine and even that system isn’t working for him anymore. Personally I’d rather see the Patriots give Justin Francis more reps, whenever he gets on the field he seems to make it count.

  23. How does a player in the wide 9 line up looking at the ball, waiting for the snap, offsides? Babin is a 1 dimensional pass rusher. Rumor has it that he is a scumbag in the locker room as well. I have been sick of watching him run up field as running backs had free run of the edges. Not the only problem on this team, but its a nice start. Any teams interested in a 5’9″ wide receiver that is afraid to go across the middle? We will take 2 third round picks for that punk!

  24. Babin may have been struggling but I really think they should have let Nnamdi Asomugha go first. This guy has come in and done nothing but stink up the place. I mean I could have tossed the touchdown to Brandon Laffel last night from that blown coverage. Letting these guys go hopefully will send a message to the rest of the team. They should post a list of players that will be cut after each week if they lose that week, this weeks cut list should look like this:

    Michael Vick
    Nnamdi Asomugha
    Todd Bowles
    Demetress Bell
    Marty Mornhinweg
    and of course Andy Reid

  25. As a non-Eagle fan this move seems idiotic. You don’t cut a player who had 18 sacks last year and 6 this year in the middle of the season. Cut Cromartie or some secondary player or the entire O-line, that’s why that team is horrible. Oh yeah, fire your coach too.

Good riddance to the overpaid under performing unprofessional jerk.

    ======================================

kenny32usa…..please tell us how you really feel !

  27. This reminds me of all the Eagles fans being glad Asante Samuel was gone. He’s been great for the Falcons this year, so thanks for that. We’ll take Nnamde too if you’re tired of him. Maybe… Just Maybe… It’s your defensive coordinator(s) that are the problem, not the players?

  28. I went to the SNF game against the Giants and saw the dude pull up to the hotel I was staying at one hour before kick off in his Lamborghini. I was thinking, dude shouldn’t you be in the locker room?

He’s a diva, not the last player to be cut from the Eagles. Let the bloodletting begin.

  29. You can’t tell me the Eagles roster is better without Babin. This clearly could have waited until the offseason. The Eagles are self destructing from the front office on down. Haven’t seen anything like this in a while.

  30. Babin stinks, but that isn’t why he got cut. I think he got cut because all he did was fight with the media and the fans. He didn’t represent his team or the city like a professional. He was more worried about selling t-shirts then being a team player. He was a cancer in the locker room and spent his time trying to make the team turn against the fans and the media. This guy has no class and that is why he was cut.

DRC is our best corner. There is no way the Eagles cut him. Guaranteed he is on the team next year. As for the O line we don’t have anyone after the guys on the field! Cutting Babin is a fine move because he simply isn’t effective in any other role than sacking the QB. So when he isnt doing that consistently, time to go

  32. This is a 5 year rebuilding project. you have very few guys that can play in the nfl on this team. maybe brown and cromartie. the rest was built up by the hype machine called the philadelphia eagles. look at the draft this year. yes boykins and curry were just sitting there later than expected because the rest of the league is dumb and wants to help you win. boykins can’t cover anyone. If i want someone who consistently returns kickoffs to the 21 yard line i’ll call brandon and curry first played last night. oh and yes demeco ryans was the answer. yes houston was just dieing to help the eagles meet their dream of a sb so they traded the great ryans to the eagles. one of the best defs in the nfl doesn’t give up on a guy that can play. he’s avg at best and his best years are behind him but the birds sold his as the messiah. stop it philly. it’s just an overrrated group of individuals to go along with an overrrated coach. guy has been avg since they went to the sb and especially after jj died. the inmates are running the asylum and it stinks to high heaven. enjoy the stank philly fan. it’s gonna be while.

  33. He was one dimensional and with the excellent performance of Vinny Curry, it was the right thing to do. Now if they can cut Nhandi non tackling self they’ll at least have some money to spend along with a high draft pick. However, it’s moot if Andy Reid is still here.

  34. If I recall correctly, the Pats were interested in him prior he signed with the Eagles, but his asking price was too high.

    Passing situation :
DE = Jones, Cunningham, Francis, Babin
    LB= Mayo, Hightower
DBs= Talib, Dennard, Chung, Gregory, Wilson

  35. Redskins should try and get Babin, to assist with the playoff push we’re about to embark on, especially if we can defeat the Giants this Monday night.

Situational pass rusher, can contribute 5-15 plays a game, more if it pans out, don’t have to pay him anything much-why not??

  36. Things seem to be lining up to possibly keep reid. they are scapeGOATing evryone but him. don’t be surprised if this guy is back next year philly.

  37. birdsflynorth206 says:Nov 27, 2012 3:22 PM

I hope this means they are getting away from the wide-9 (or whatever you want to call it)

It really should have been called the “inside nine” since you can get 9 yards a pop running inside it….

  38. 23.5 quarterback sacks in 27 games for Jason Babin in this stint with the Eagles and that is “underperforming” …Oooo-k ?!?

I’m sure many teams will be lining up for that…

In Philly, first the D-coordinator is the scapegoat, now it is the overpaid (the gave him the contract) “underperforming Defensive End ?!?! Ha

Who’s the next scapegoat for the Eagles? You know more are coming….by seasons end…

  39. mcjon22

Yeah, cut the 26 year old corner on a relatively cheap contract before cutting our 32 year old defensive end whos production has dropped by over 50% on an expensive contract. Makes sense.

  40. Should have taken the Maurice Jones-Drew and Darrelle Revis style contract by getting most of the money up front.

  41. Talented pass rusher, terrible against the run. I could see using him as a third down DE and late in the game when most teams are passing to catch up. I would wait and hope he passes through waivers in order to get him at a better price. Its likely that he won’t make it past New England or New Orleans though.

  42. I just moved to Philly and the fans are running the Eagles right now. Wanted Castillo gone, wanted Vick benched, wanted them to clean house in front office and everyone but Howie Roseman has been fired, Babin said he was disgusted with the fans chanted for Andy Reid’s job and questioned their loyalty and now he is gone. They are getting what they want right now, and will get all of what they want once Reid is let go, but I have a feeling once they get all of what they want they won’t like that either. These are passionate fans, but I would never call them good fans.

  43. @andrewfbrowne

Its about time they listen to us fans.

We wanted a WR for like 5 years they go out and get TO and McNabb had his best season and the Eagles went to the bowl. (of course the low-ball contract they gave TO blew up in their face but it was a magical season)

We said McNabb was overrated and we got dogged for it. How is he doing now.

We said we need to run the ball more and now, well ok 2 out of 3 ain’t bad.

As for this year Juan Castillo shouldn’t have been fired from a job he shouldn’t have had in the first place. Oh and Andy way to help him out by bringing in Washburn and the wide 9.

Vick didn’t get benched he got a concusion. And I see no reason not to let Foles show what he has left when the season is over for the Eagles.

This move is a warning to all the other roster bubble guys on this team. Shape up or ship out.

    ———————————————————-

Wide 9 defensive ends have almost no chance against the run, it’s not about refusal to play it. Babin played linebacker in Houston and played more of a JKearse/WMcGinest role in Tennesee, both with some success. Pats wouls be crazy not to look at him as a situational pass rusher. You really think JFrancis can hold a candle to this guy?? Please.

  45. The “sacks” he picked up in the last two weeks were both situations where the QB went down on his own without being hit and Babin just touched him to get credit for the sack. Come to think of it, he had a few like that last year as well.

  46. Maybe he had not a great attitude but he had 23.5 sacks in one and half season, what about Asomougha who allowed 500 long bombs in the last season?

  47. steelerben says: Nov 27, 2012 3:19 PM

Are the Eagles making their player personnel decisions based upon the comments section here at PFT?
    —————————

Well, that would explain their record.

  48. Last player picked up by NE that was considered a liability against the run but a good pass rusher: MAnderson(10 sacks).

Its about time they listen to us fans.
    ———————————————–

Any front office that makes decisions based on what the fans say should be fired on the spot. Especially in Philly.

  50. Wow, I was going to drop the “Pats could use him” comment… but after reading these comments I’m hoping they stay away.

  51. Probably the worst DE ive seen play the position. This guy got his sacks by good secondary play and being flat out fast and just running by the RT. Well that doesnt look pretty when the other team runs the ball. Its time to get rid of that dead weight dline and secondary. Aso should be next.

I know he will land in DC!!! He can go back to Philly in a couple of weeks and get some payback….or lay an egg!

    —————————-
PLEASE….stop with that. Babin to the skins? Who sits for him? He doesn’t play 3-4 D. He is one dimensional, and has no place in Washington. We are moving forward in DC, right? No more out of place, bad attitude Free agents, Please.

  53. This cancer has all the passion and intrinsic motivation of a styrofoam cooler. Cry baby’s pre game routine is selling t shirts (seriously) to fans at the Linc and spends his rapidly diminishing game time worrying about others calling him bad names….waaaaa, waaaa, waaaa! Good riddance.
