Five teams can clinch this weekend

New England Patriots' Brady holds up a turkey leg after they defeated New York Jets in their NFL football game in East Rutherford Reuters

Week 13 of the NFL season could be lucky for up to five teams.

In the coming days, the Texans, Ravens, Patriots, Broncos, and Falcons can each clinch playoff berths.

For the Pats, it’s simple:  Win and they’re in, via the AFC East crown.

For the Texans, a win or a tie gets it done.  Also, the Texans back in with a loss and:  (1) a Dolphins loss or tie and a Steelers loss or tie; or (2) a Dolphins loss or tie and a Bengals loss or tie; or (3) a Steelers loss and a Bengals loss.

The Ravens can win the AFC North with a victory and a Bengals loss.  Also, Baltimore can secure a playoff berth (but not the division), with a win or a tie combined with a Bengals loss and a Dolphins loss or tie.

The Broncos win the AFC West with a win, or with a Chargers loss or tie.

The Falcons win the NFC South with a win and a Bucs loss or tie, or with a tie and a Bucs loss.  Atlanta secures a playoff berth with a win and a Seahawks loss or tie, or Falcons tie and losses by the Seahawks and Vikings.

The fact that five teams can get in this week, when only one had a chance in Week 12, highlights the separation that occurred via wins by every division leader (except, technically, the Packers), and losses by every second-place team (except, technically, the Bears).

Amazing that everyone kept saying the only way the Texans would get in the playoffs is because of such a weak division. With Indy being the leading Wildcard team, looks like that might be a pretty tough division after all.

    @emajj,
Yeh and Cowboy fans were raving about how tough their division is. They’re still 5-6 in a bad division.

so the ravens can clinch the north with a win and a bengals loss, but a win, a bengals loss and a dolphins loss would result in them not winning the north?

Denver and New England in weak divisions too… But its seems like the AFC South gets the hate!!!

    GO TEXANS!!!

This season has been terrible. The Referee’s have been very biased, which has impacted the score to many games this season. Not that the substitute refs were any better, but the regular referee’s are supposed to be better at their jobs than what they have given this season. One or two bad calls can change the way the game ends. Several games this season have gone the opposite way they were headed before the bad calls. Way too many defensive pass interference calls have been made, along with extremely bad ball spots. The NFL needs to fix this.

Texans haven’t even played the Colts yet…2 games against them, and 1 against the Patriots…tough final stretch for Houston.

no Indy has a couple more years of building their team before they become treat to take much of anything.

I agree. The Patriots are good really good but the other teams in the division have refused to catch up to them.

Last year the Jets were 8-5 at this time and the division wasn’t decided until mid-December but this year no team besides the Patriots is even at .500.

Jags are terrible and the titans aren’t very good either. The Colts are up and coming but I wouldn’t expect them to do much in the playoffs.

The division isn’t very good man

With the Jaguars and Titans? I don’t think so. And maybe the fact that the Colts will be making the playoffs is just a reflection of how bad the AFC is as a whole. Outside of the Broncos and Patriots in the West and East, respectively, those divisions are horrific.

    I hate you Norv Turner.

I love how the Patriots have no competition, but the Broncos do?

Regarding that mighty AFC North, Tom Brady is like 14-4 combined against the Ravens and Steelers and 3-1 in the playoffs. You know which team in that division that gives the Patriots the most trouble? THE BROWNS, LOL!

  21. stevincinci says: Nov 27, 2012 3:09 PM

Colts won’t make it. Look for them to lose 3 out of next 4.

  24. harrisonhits2 says: Nov 27, 2012 3:18 PM

Hey its not the Pats fault the other teams in the division are poorly run.

What do you want them to do, hand back interceptions or recovered fumbles to the other teams in their division to make it more equal ?

Or maybe the Pats kick returners should have to turn around and run backwards towards the other team’s goal line after receiving a kick ?

  25. hehateme2 says: Nov 27, 2012 3:38 PM

It would be great to see Baby Brady choke on that turkey leg…. again.

    blackngold4life,

AFCE is a joke, agreed this season. BUT coming from a fan that has had the Browns and the Bengals in its division for the past decade, should not be commenting on weak divisions?

    ————————

This year that is true. However, not always the case over the past few years. The Jets or Miami have been very good at times. As for the AFC North (seeing that you are a Steelers fan), in the Brady era (including 2008) the Patriots are 58-16 (78%) in the division and 19-7 (73%) against the AFC North including playoffs. The Steelers and Ravens have only won 5 of 16 against them. They haven’t faired much better then the AFC East over the years.

In the NFL, any given Sunday a lower-ranked team can win; especially when they’re gunning for the top dog, who gets tested relentlessly; ie. Patriots.

Where did all the anti-Broncos trolls go? I remember a lot of posters claiming that Broncos fans were delusional for believing they were big time contenders. Not a bad job so far with one of the hardest schedules.

  32. bucforever says: Nov 27, 2012 6:59 PM

Well, well it looks like the Broncos and the Falcons are in luck this week. Peyton should be able to rack up 400 t0 500 yards on the Bucs weak secondary. Unless Freeman can match TDs with Manning this week the Falcons and the Broncos should be a cinch to clinch! The good news is I will be rooting for the Falcons thursday night!

  33. 8man says: Nov 27, 2012 7:07 PM

The AFC East is rather average besides the Patriots. Imagine where they’d be if they hadn’t missed that FG against Arizona, or tanked either of the games against Baltimore or Seattle. Oy! Those were stinkers! Especially the Seahawks game. Uuuuu-gleeee.

They’ll have to win out for any hope of a week off during the playoffs.
