When the Panthers signed veteran defensive tackle Ron Edwards in the 2011 offseason, the hope was he’d lend some stability to a young defense.

When he’s been out there, he’s been able to.

Panthers coach Ron Rivera just said Edwards was going on injured reserve after dislocating his elbow in last night’s win over the Eagles. They’ll fill his spot on the 53-man roster by promoting Frank Kearse from the practice squad.

The 33-year-old Edwards missed all of last season with a torn triceps suffered in training camp, but came back and formed an acceptable partnership with Dwan Edwards inside, allowing the Panthers to make some strides, particularly with their pass rush.
