Bottom line alex smith played one of the worse defense in football (during playoffs) won against a worse defense in football. Just like matt ryan if you cant win big games against good defense in jan. Don’t matter what your winning column for regular season. Better chance to take you to promise land? kaep.

Trade him to the Jets for some draft picks. Hes an improvement over Sanchez and Tebow and they run the type of boring offense he can be successful in. Alex Smith’s days were numbered as soon as they drafted this kid. If you watched him play in college you could tell he has real talent. Its a business and the 49ers are going to go with the guy that they feel can take them farthest

and to think he did the niners a favor for signing for “a home team discount” of only 25 million for three years…….he should have got at least 14 per season…….i know right now he is hoping the niners release him at the end of the season, and pay him the additional 4 million they would owe him and take the cap hit on that money next year…… I then can see him signing with the az cardinals next year, and haunting the 49ers for the next 6 years or so.

really should have benched him when he was not doing good, but not when he is playing the best he ever has…….on the other hand Go Nevada WOLF PACK!

There is simply nothing more sought after in the league than a veteran QB who’s battle tested at the highest level, like Alex Smith. The bottom half of the league are all looking for the piece that will elevate them to where he was last year. He tried to leverage this to a higher salary last year, but backed down when they talked to Manning. He’s a grown man that knows the score in the football business. He should quit whining and be ready to step back in through the playoffs, then the Niners would be foolish to keep two starters and trade one of them. Kaepernick is far from a tested veteran, but could be a talent to put the Niners over the top, which they are obviously seeking. Anything can happen along the way.

Alex Smith has nothing to lose but everything to gain. If Kap messes up in one of his future starts, Harbaugh will switch QB’s. Hopefully Kap does well though. It’s a good problem to have I suppose.

This sounds very much like the Buffalo Bills QB situation with Flutie and Johnson years ago. If I’m not mistaken the Bills haven’t made the playoffs since.

As a long time 49er fan I can tell you for sure Kaep is not Elvis Grbac. Not sure I see the Rob Johnson comparisons either. Although I’m not saying he’s Brady. I also hear people saying he hasn’t gone against a good defense. The Bears are a solid D. So what if he has a bad game, Alex had bad games too.

It was pretty dumb of Smith to not negotiate for more guaranteed money with this last contract extension. No team would give up high high draft picks for the guy and assume his contract. He will either take a huge pay cut to remain the backup or he will be cut so the Niners can retain players on defense

Amazing how short people’s memory is….we’ve seen this movie…..diva Brett Favre retires once too often and while he was crying, Aaron Rogers finally gets a chance….remember?

Absolutely nobody at the time thought “Hey wait, maybe the coach and GM aren’t 100% stupid and maybe Aaron Rogers is really, really, really good!” Now we know – he is better than Favre ever was. No wonder they made the change. Right?

Here we go again and nobody sees it. Maybe its just not about Smith or his concussion…..
maybe Kaepernick is really that good.

Seattle has a great Defense, and I’d like to see him against them. But NE? That’s a joke, their D has been terrible this year! (You can’t count the Jets, Sanchez did the work for them)

I feel bad for him. He’s played great and gone, 19-5-1? The morale of the story here is don’t reveal injuries. Not what the NFL league office wants. Yet, Kaepernick has a great skill set and can run. What will happen to him when he gets a concussion, which seems inevitable for all QB’s these days.
