Eagles coach Andy Reid can start quarterback Nick Foles for at least another game without officially demoting Michael Vick.
That’s because the Eagles confirmed today that Vick still hasn’t been medically cleared to return from the concussion he suffered on November 11 against the Cowboys. That means Foles is slated to start his third straight game when the Eagles rematch the Cowboys on Sunday night.
The Eagles previously said Vick was making good progress and seemed to be on course to get cleared for return this week, but now the Eagles are saying Vick still hasn’t reached his baseline level on the cognitive test every player must pass before returning from a concussion.
Realistically, the Eagles are probably perfectly happy to have Vick sit out the rest of the season, because he probably won’t be back next year anyway, and it makes sense to give the team a chance to see what Foles can do. So at a time when concerns are being raised around the NFL about players being rushed back onto the field after suffering concussions, the Eagles will gladly give Vick all the time he needs -- perhaps the rest of the season.
