Safety puts Rams on the board

One of the reasons to eschew the field goal and go for the touchdown on fourth and goal from the one is that the failure to convert gives the opposing the team ball deep in their own end.

That’s what happened in St. Louis, with a goal line stand from the 49ers resulting in a Rams safety.

The curious aspect is that it came after the Niners had moved the ball from the shadow of their end zone to the 17.  But when quarterback Colin Kaepernick dropped back to the five and then retreated to the end zone while being chased by a Rams defender and Kaepernick then threw the ball away, it resulted in a safety for the Rams.

That made the score 7-2.  The better news is that it makes it a little harder for the game between the two teams to be tied at the end of regulation, again.
