When looking at a trade you have to look at it if the trade was a good one at the time of the player being traded. Miami was more then likely to let Welker go with the offer the Pat gave him so getting that additional 7th was bonus. What they got in value makes it a good trade. Now what they did what those picks is what made the trade not look so good which has more too do with Miami’s long history of bad drafts than them not getting good value for Welker.

From what I remember there weren’t many who felt the Fins should have matched the offer. Actually from what I remember the feeling was that Welker would only be worth the money if he was going to a team like the Pats.

The Fins mistake was only placing a 2nd round tender on him which gave the Pats the chance to sign him without giving up a 1st.

Miami actually got an extra 7th from them in exchange for trading him before the Pats had to have that money frozen for 7 days waiting to see if Miami would match. If Miami had matched 7 days later then the Pats would have likely missed out on their next few options so they paid the 7th to not wait.

I know I’m splitting hairs here…because NE was going to get him one way or the other. I think Kraft wanted to avoid using such poison pills because he knew that would come back to the organization in one form or another.

The Pats very astutely used a ‘poison pill’ offer that Miami couldn’t match. It wasn’t that they traded him through choice, they simply couldn’t afford to keep him on the deal they would’ve had to pay out under the rules.

As for Welker himself I’d believe him more if he didn’t jump and dance around so much after each big completion or celebrate every TD against Miami as if he’d just made the Superbowl winning catch. Wes, we get that you want to come across as a ‘nice guy’ so either tone it down or better still just admit that you get an extra buzz out of putting one over on your old team. Fans would completely understand.

Thus, Miami was forced to make that trade with New England. Another brilliant move by Belichick.
