Foles will start for the Eagles, even if Vick’s well

Philadelphia Eagles v Dallas Cowboys Getty Images

It’s not technically a white flag, but it probably signals the end of a few careers with the Eagles.

Coach Andy Reid said a few moments ago that rookie quarterback Nick Foles will start the rest of the season, even if Michael Vick is well. At the moment, it’s a moot point, because Vick hasn’t been cleared after his concussion.

If they’re not going to play Vick, it’s clearer (than it already was) that the Eagles are looking to the future rather than paying Vick $15.5 million next season.

Maybe Reid will take him along to his next stop, because it appears they’ll both be looking.

Time for Vick to put the house up for sell

  2. bigjdve says: Dec 3, 2012 12:21 PM

It isn’t hard to believe. Foles is getting better with each game as he gets experience and confidence.

He also isn’t making nearly as many mistakes as Vick, and he doesn’t even have the same people that Vick had, he has slightly worse.

    And Vick is the veteran.

I am glad to see this decision made.

  3. themagicman1223 says: Dec 3, 2012 12:21 PM

Why not, let’s see if he can be the future quaterback for the Eagles.

  4. logicalvoicesays says: Dec 3, 2012 12:21 PM

The Philadelphia Eagles are back! Back in the cellar where they have called home for most of their team history save the McNabb era. Enjoy it because you will stay there for at least 5 years…forget about 1st place, that belongs to RGIII and the Redskins.

  5. kja22 says: Dec 3, 2012 12:22 PM

What did Vick do to be put into the doghouse?

  6. bleedgreen11 says: Dec 3, 2012 12:22 PM

All this Reid talk fueled by the media… I hope Reid stays next year so all you fools have to eat your words.

You do the worst job ever of reporting news, how you are on TV is beyond me.

  7. finsphan says: Dec 3, 2012 12:22 PM

I still think Vick can be a quality starter in this league, Arizona should be his next stop. good receivers, decent backfield, good defense and a coach who runs the spread offense.

  8. bigblu73 says: Dec 3, 2012 12:22 PM

Im happy for Vick!!! No need to take punishment with no chance to make the playoffs! Both Vick and Reid will be employed elsewhere in the NFL without a doubt.

  9. joetoronto says: Dec 3, 2012 12:23 PM

The fact is Vick didn’t get better as the years went on, he got a bit slower though.

  10. ctiggs says: Dec 3, 2012 12:25 PM

Noting will save Andy’s or Mike’s job now, might as well play the kid.

  11. rgb2425 says: Dec 3, 2012 12:26 PM

Interesting that Andy cares so much about the future of this team. He is staying as the Eagles coach. Mark my words.

  12. cbs1971 says: Dec 3, 2012 12:27 PM

Yeah, I knew this was coming. It’s best to keep Vick healthy because if they put him back in and gets hurt again, his stock will go down. Vick will find another job but I’m glad that the Foles era has begun.

  13. bobby2478 says: Dec 3, 2012 12:29 PM

This wasn’t hard to see coming. They are in full-blown rebuilding phase.

Might as well auction off some of their older veterans that would be worth something in trade and pick up some more draft picks.

I also wouldn’t be surprised if they just put McCoy on IR and continue to see what they have in Brown. McCoy isn’t going anywhere, but why risk his health at this point with their season in the toilet. If Brown tears it up over the rest of the season, they might have another great piece of trade bait to restock their depleted roster with young players. They’ve already stated they plan on evaluating young talent to see what they’re working with.

  14. FinFan68 says: Dec 3, 2012 12:29 PM

Foles didn’t look too bad last night…but that 2 point conversion try was bad on several levels. Vick is not a good QB and most fans know it. He survives on hype and the “potential” for a big play. He would be very good if he were consistent but he has never been that. The jaw-dropping plays keep fans (and coaches) begging for more but the mediocrity/stupidity in between those plays are what defines his true ability. Just good enough to break some hearts. He can’t/won’t win and his superior athleticism is no longer superior.

  15. eagleswin says: Dec 3, 2012 12:34 PM

Does this mean we won’t be getting these anonymous reports from Vick’s camp claiming that the Eagles are holding him back from passing his concussion tests?

The truth is he just isn’t that smart. Let the rookie make his rookie mistakes this year. It’s amazing watching the QB actually go through his progressions and call audibles at the line of scrimmage. I’d forgotten that QBs could actually do those things.

  16. caseysarasota says: Dec 3, 2012 12:34 PM

I think at this point to start Vick would have been stupid anyway…I mean seriously, there are no playoffs, it’s a good chance to see what he (and the other young’ns for that matter will do next year, IF, the new coach (unless Lurie has a mental collapse and keeps Reid) wants to use him. I did like what I saw, but that was ONE game against a struggling Dallas Cowboy team..just remember BOBBY HOYING. LOL….

  17. xofootballer says: Dec 3, 2012 12:36 PM

Yea, take Vick with him. As a backup maybe.

  18. bobbyhoying says: Dec 3, 2012 12:38 PM

Don’t annoint RG III until you’re sure he’s not the next Cam Newton. We’ll find out next year.

  19. cowboychris5xchamps says: Dec 3, 2012 12:45 PM

Talk about quarterback controversy!!! That $100 million dollars just turned into $12.5!!! Classic!!! HAHAHA!!!

  20. greymares says: Dec 3, 2012 12:48 PM

Andy Reid is not going anywhere he will be coaching the EAGLES in 2013. Babin being cut, Washburn being fired Andy agreeing to playing Foles (would he do that if he wasn’t coming back). Lurie will play the death of Reid’s son all the Oline injuries followed by the loss of his top Q.B., top running back, and top receiver. Reid will re-tool the coaching staff and be at Lehigh next July. I do beleive he will only be the coach. Roseman and Donahoe will make the football decisions but Andy will coach this team.

  21. ballreaper says: Dec 3, 2012 12:48 PM

I can tell you with a 3 win team STARTERS want no part of finishing a season, These games are like Preseason to them; It serve no purpose but put them in danger for INJURIES which can cost them MONEY down the road.

Very simple! if the eagles go with foles next season- no chance for playoffs and basement city in that NFC east here we come , Or they can bring in a new Coach and have Vick back with some weapons added ,, After all ..Vick just last season had them with the 4th BEST offense in football, and that was with djack not trying.

  22. tomdrec42 says: Dec 3, 2012 12:49 PM

Obviously most of your so called eagles fans don’t watch the games. Foles is terrible his only gift he has is getting lucky the defense keep dropping his interceptions. Vick wasn’t playing very well but to try to make it seem like foles is better then him is ridiculous. Vick may be gone and I hope he is and lands in San Francisco where he will probably win the Super Bowl with that team and coaches but foles definitely shouldn’t be the qb going forward he hasn’t shown anything to deserve it. No wins low qb rating, just a lot of yards bc Reid still wants to throw the ball almost 50 times a game.

  23. autoriot says: Dec 3, 2012 12:56 PM

The posts by Redskins fans on Eagles related articles are, for the most part, ridiculous.

This is the best news this Eagles fan has heard all season. Thanks for the report!

  24. dtjano says: Dec 3, 2012 12:58 PM

Some team that believes they’re a QB away will bring Vick and still be a QB away. Arizona or Buffalo would be my guess.

  25. rugbyisbetter says: Dec 3, 2012 12:58 PM

So many people consider Andy Reid to be the ‘Quaterback Groomer’, I just hope Lurie doesn’t bite the bait to keep AR around to groom Foles..

AR isn’t a bad coach… In many ways reminds me of Coach Dungy… had a good run with a good team but just can’t take them over the top. He needs to be refreshed with a new organization, equally as much as the Eagles need a new Head Coach..

Good luck to both of them as they hopefully split.. soon.

  26. andyreidisthegoat says: Dec 3, 2012 12:59 PM

This is an upper management move. vick is a reid guy. He wanted to go with vick. Reid is doing his yes sir, no sir routine right now. It appears he is toeing the company line and possibly saving his job. It just feels like a reid return is in the works here.

  27. theblowtorchreview says: Dec 3, 2012 1:04 PM

Vick is finished. What is he 33-34 yrs old? He hasnt looked good this year BEFORE he got a concussion.

Maybe he can take an unpaid position with PETA?

  28. alaricsrevenge says: Dec 3, 2012 1:06 PM

I hate being in the basement of the NFC East, smells too much like the Redskins.

  29. marcinhouston says: Dec 3, 2012 1:07 PM

They should also consider swapping their current o-line with the security staff working the gates. People would get into the stadium faster and to the QB slower.

  30. janvanflac says: Dec 3, 2012 1:11 PM

The only downside to playing Foles the rest of the season would be if he were to get smashed behind that bad o-line the way Trent Edwards did in Buffalo…but they didn’t actually look so bad yesterday, and his quick reads and ability to sidestep pressure while keeping his eyes downfield helps him.

The Eagles were sunk by injuries to the O-line which for a QB like Vick who holds on to the ball for 8 seconds is fatal. But even the backups can obviously run block just fine. The offense in general has been improving in recent weeks.

The defense, on the other hand, is a mess.

  31. cooklynn17 says: Dec 3, 2012 1:13 PM

    Dynasty…

  32. vicksprman says: Dec 3, 2012 1:13 PM

Why do I get the impression Vick is okay with this move and Andy will be back next year and Vick will redo his contract and compete with Foles for the job next year?

You really should listen to this guy. He knows all about being on the cellar. But somebody should tell this guy that the skins are 5-6 and after tonight they will pretty much be done as far as playoffs go. The worst part is the skins gave away there next 3 years worth of picks and so unless rg3 plays defence they’re going to be a 1 trick pony and in the division they in they are just going to be out coached for the next 5-7 years. 2nd maybe 3rd on the devision perennially.

  34. godofwine330 says: Dec 3, 2012 1:43 PM

Now that $1 million Vick spent on his wedding seem more than a bit excessive, huh? If this man goes broke TWICE then I have absolutely no pity for him. Plenty of people go broke. That isn’t a big deal, but going broke a second time after you should have learned is, well, …idiotic. Spending $1 million on a wedding however, is.

  35. ace8842 says: Dec 3, 2012 1:44 PM

Vick is on the downside of his career. He’s 33 and like Mcnabb a few years ago, the arrow is pointing down. He can’t get away from pressure the way he used to. His height is a disadvantage on slant patterns and short drops. He’s never show the type of consistency from week to week needed to win a Super Bowl. I think Reid knows the Eagle organization and Lurie have done a lot for him, so he’s coaching the way the organization would want to in setting things up for a new coach.

  36. eaglesnoles05 says: Dec 3, 2012 1:49 PM

@greymares: I was just signing on here to post that exact sentiment. If I were the onwer, I’d let him go — with much appreciation, but I’d let him go. But I know lurie is battling in his head between his preseason proclamation and the statement you posted.

  37. dachozen1 says: Dec 3, 2012 1:56 PM

It was simply the right thing to do. You have to see what the young man can do. Maybe Vick can go to the Cardinals and make Fitz happy.

Your points about the Skins and two more…

Smallish quarterbacks, who run tend to take unnecessary hits and get hurt and have short shelf lives – just take a look at Michael Vick.

And while RG3 is a better passer than Vick – you also need to acknowledge that this whole read-option thing is a fad and givan a full offseason NFL minds will figure out how to counter it – just like they figured out Cam after a season.

Good luck though and enjoy being the most entertaining 7-9 team on the block. It’s really something to be proud of… Of course, I would rather suck than be mediocre.

  39. ibangrocks4fun says: Dec 3, 2012 2:12 PM

As a supporter of McNabb and Vick, Foles delivered the ball in a way I haven’t seen in a while from an Eagles QB. His mechanics and confidence really showed in the Cowboys game. Unfortunately with Reid possibly leaving Foles won’t have the opportunity to develop the way Reid turns any QB into gold, or something close to it.

  40. richwizl says: Dec 3, 2012 2:13 PM

Foles is a good athlete and a bright spot for Eagles fans; Vick messed his career up with canine-gate. Eagles have talent, so their erratic play has been tough to fathom. I feel they will be much better next year. Meanwhile, I’m very excited about getting the chance to watch a truly electrifying player on National TV tonight; one RGIII; that guy is amazing.

  41. moneey31 says: Dec 3, 2012 2:27 PM

I’m a Cowboys fan, but I wish you Eagles fans would stop using Vick as your escape goat. Your o line is awful. It’s worst than the one in Dallas and that’s hard to be. When you gave Vick a little time he was a great quarterback for you guys. This year the poor guy was running for his life as soon as the ball was snapped. Go ahead and go with Foles, and watch you stay at the bottom of the East for years to come. Philly fans have no loyalty. Oh yea, and Redskin fans please stifle yourselves, you beat the Cowboys 1x, you didn’t win the SuperBowl. You guys are still below average and if RGIII got hurt you wouldn’t win another game this season…

  42. eaglesfanalways says: Dec 3, 2012 2:39 PM

As an Eagle’s fan, I hated the decision to make Vick the starting QB. Vick certainly has the right to play in the NFL, but not for my team…I am really looking forward to next season when we’re all done with Reid/Vick/Mornhinweg/Washburn/Mudd/etc.

  43. bigblu73 says: Dec 3, 2012 3:50 PM

Last season with a healthy O-line Mike Vick led the Eagles to the 4th ranked offense in the NFL!!! Somehow the Iggles fans fail to see the correlation between losing 4 offensive line starters and their dismal season!!!! Lol Its not rocket science, nobody can be successful under those circumstances!!!

So, how many games would the Cowboys be winning with Romo out and Orton at the helm? Or for that matter any NFL team with their starting QB down?

I know the Steelers are counting their blessings to have gone 1-2 with Ben out so far.

  45. eastcoastniner says: Dec 3, 2012 4:28 PM

It’s hard to justify $15.5M against their cap with Vick’s production and seeing that he is at the tail-end of his career.

    ==================================

I’m starting to believe this. They havent even bothered to give him the post concussion tests yet? Whne RGIII got wacked they were testing him before the weekend arrived. Of course, the Skins had to fall back on Sexy Rexy if RGIII stayed out.

  51. justintuckrule says: Dec 3, 2012 6:19 PM

As a Giants’ fan, I’m finally getting to see how spoiled Pats’ fans were watching their team coast through the AFC East and only have to win a few games to reach the mountaintop. Our division is finally turning into the AFC East with us playing the part of the Pats. The rest of the characters….

Buffalo Bills = Redskins. Have stunk since the 90s’. Sign a few feel good players in the offseason. Have high hopes. Ultimately crash and burn to 7-9.

Cowboys = Dolphins. If not for their world-renowned logos, nobody would care for these teams. More of the same high hopes no prayer type team.

guess and guess! Even the colors match. Two dysfunctional, red-headed step brother organizations who both talk QB in March and become irrelevant in December. At this point, comparing whose QB situation is better is like bragging about having the hiv instead of cancer.

Finally, Big Blue can now reign supreme over this division for the remaining Eli years, coast into the playoffs and always be 3 wins away from immortality just like their cousins from Mass.

  52. bubba703 says: Dec 3, 2012 6:20 PM

Overhauling his coaching staff this late in a season does not sound like a head coach who’s about to be fired after the season. I think Eagle fans should be prepared to see Andy Reid back next year.

As far as Vick, I’m sure he still has concussion symptoms, but with the playoffs being unreachable now, there’s no reason why they shouldn’t see what Foles can do, even with a bad O-line.

  53. broadstreetbull says: Dec 3, 2012 6:44 PM

Reid should have made Foles the starter after week 3. Vick has always been overrated… I’m glad he’s done in Philly. All these haters banging on Foles must not watch a lot of football… He is a true rookie, playing with 4 backup O-lineman (including one who wasn’t even in the league a month ago), his fastest WR out and one of the best RB’s in the league out; and with all of that, I think he has looked pretty good. It’s nice to see the future for once and it not contain a running/mobile QB… Because we all know that style of QB play is the recipe for success… :-/ As for the Skins fans all jacked about RGIII… We’ve been watching the RGIII show in Philly for 25 years… Good luck with that.
