Julian Edelman headed to injured reserve

The Patriots have lost Julian Edelman for the rest of the season.

WBZ in Boston reports that Edelman has a broken foot that will require surgery, and he is likely to be placed on injured reserve, which would end his season.

Edelman got hurt during Sunday’s win over the Dolphins, and he left the stadium on crutches and wearing a protective boot. The Patriots have offered no official updates on Edelman’s status, although the fact that they signed receiver Donte Stallworth strongly suggests that they don’t expect Edelman back any time soon.

For the Patriots, the loss will be significant both to their offense and to their special teams, where Edelman is having an excellent season returning punts and is also a solid player on kick coverage.

UPDATE 4:50 p.m. ET: The Patriots have confirmed that Edeleman was placed on injured reserve.

  1. Pats keep getting hit hard at the end of season with injuries. If Gronk is healthy the end of last year, they win the Super Bowl.

If I’m the Pats, I’m throwing the Cardinals a 2013 2nd and a 2014 3rd to try and get Fitz to help Brady win another ring before he retires.

  2. Um, Brady is a lot smarter then these other players and realizes the ability for doctors to have the baby born whenever he and Mrs. Brady wishes. No idea what Roethlisberger’s grandstanding was all about.

  3. Another one of Brady’s top targets going down at the end of the season. First Welker, then Gronk, and now Edelman. Unfortunate stretch. Luckily the Patriots have weapons to spare and this one isn’t quite as damaging to the offense as either of the past two. Hopefully Welker (I assume that’s who will be returning punts now) can pick up where Edelman left off in special teams, he has been dynamic there.

  4. Edelman will be missed in many ways. It’s too bad because he was having his best year as a Patriot. Especially special teams. As per the Patriot way, the next man up will do his job.

  5. Yup, this hurts. Welker is quick, but Edelman is fast and a good return man and tackler. There’s no one to replace his skill set. If we lose to the Texans, hopefully we’ll be healthier when we face them in the payoffs at their house.

  6. Well if Edelman is on IR which offensive player are the Patriots going to get to be a mediocre (at best) corner so that the media can once again fawn over the “genius” of Belichick? Meanwhile they somehow overlook the fact that his record on drafting and signing defensive players in the last 8 years hasn’t been very good.

Why did Belichick still have Edelman in the game during the first quarter?

    Because he’s on the team.

His draft record is better than most. But, ya know, wins are pretty important to. He has quite a few of those.

  9. Tbd3: yeah, just look at all those Super Bowl rings he’s collected in the last 8 years….

  10. I figured the “Belichick can’t draft” crowd would be quiet for a few years. When Tavon is on the field, over 1/3 of the defense is from this year’s draft.
