The Seattle Seahawks placed starting left guard James Carpenter on the non-football illness list Tuesday, ending his 2012 season.

There has been no word yet as to the nature of the illness that led to Carpenter’s season coming to an end.

Carpenter had left Sunday’s game against the Chicago Bears after the Seahawks opening possession with an injury to his left knee. It’s the same knee Carpenter tore his ACL in last October. Carpenter was forced to miss the entire off-season while on the physically unable to perform list before being activated during final cuts. He still missed the first three games of the season before returning to the lineup. A concussion also forced him to miss two games mid-season.

The Seahawks signed rookie guard Rishaw Johnson to the active roster from the practice squad to fill Carpenter’s spot on the roster. With Seattle also releasing receiver Braylon Edwards Tuesday with a waived/injured designation, the Seahawks still have an open roster spot to fill.

Other players to have landed on the non-football illness list recently are Philadelphia Eagles defensive tackle Mike Patterson and Detroit Lions running back Jerome Harrison. Patterson had to undergo brain surgery to correct a brain abnormality. Harrison had a brain tumor that was discovered upon taking a physical to complete a trade from the Lions to the Eagles. Harrison is still out of football as he has had setbacks in his recovery.
