Jets stick with Mark Sanchez as Sunday’s starter

Mark Sanchez AP

Rex Ryan is sticking with Mark Sanchez.

The Jets have announced that Sanchez, who was benched on Sunday in favor of third-stringer Greg McElroy, will start on Sunday in Jacksonville. Jets coach Rex Ryan informed the team at a meeting this morning that Sanchez will remain the starter, and the team confirmed that Ryan will address the issue at a press conference today.

The news reinforces the long-held belief that the Jets are wedded to Sanchez as their starter: Ryan has always insisted that Sanchez is the franchise quarterback, the team has a significant financial commitment to him, and until Sunday’s game against the Cardinals, Ryan’s commitment had never wavered.

Still, after Ryan’s commitment did waver on Sunday, and after McElroy came in and led the Jets to their only touchdown in a 7-6 victory, there was plenty of sentiment that McElroy should get a chance to show what he can do. (There wasn’t much sentiment for Tim Tebow to get the job, even though Tebow had been ahead of McElroy on the depth chart all season.)

Now Sanchez gets an opportunity to improve in a game against an easy opponent, the 2-10 Jaguars. If Sanchez throws this game away, it might be his last chance.

Once again, Rex’s bravado and reluctance to admit a mistake (Sanchez over McElroy) will cost him.

  2. xxwhodatxx says: Dec 5, 2012 8:17 AM

They’re not even trying to win now

  3. nflofficeadmin says: Dec 5, 2012 8:18 AM

    Foolish.

  4. uwsptke says: Dec 5, 2012 8:18 AM

And they wouldn’t have such a large financial commitment if they hadn’t given him a new deal to soothe his hurt feelings after acquiring Tebow. I guess Braylon Edwards and I are in agreement on at least one issue.

  5. jameswestphal says: Dec 5, 2012 8:20 AM

Wow, how unwatchable is that game going to be?

Rex Ryan must be betting on these games with his bookie. That’s the only logical explanation.

As an eagles fan I am fed up with Andy Reid’s actions. But this makes Andy look like a genius. Poor Jets fans.

It’s almost like Rex WANTS to get fired

  13. skins716 says: Dec 5, 2012 8:31 AM

  14. tking63 says: Dec 5, 2012 8:32 AM

Does it matter who the QB is? Not even Tebowmania could save the Jets this season.

  15. jamomma says: Dec 5, 2012 8:45 AM

Everyone sing along out loud for Rex to hear:

And now, the end is here
And so I face the final curtain
My friend, I’ll say it clear
I’ll state my case, of which I’m certain
    I’ve lived a life that’s full
I traveled each and ev’ry highway
And more, much more than this, I stuck with Sanchez”

  16. jimthebuilder27 says: Dec 5, 2012 8:47 AM

Are the Jets trying to lose??

That’s the only reason I can think of as to why they’re sticking with numbnuts at QB. Or maybe Tannenbaum, Ryan and Sparano are idiots…

  17. ajb3313 says: Dec 5, 2012 8:48 AM

The most exciting part? The game this week is against the hapless Jags and their remaining games after that are against Tennessee, San Diego, and Buffalo. There’s a reasonable chance they go 2-2 or even 3-1 in those games and finish 8-8 or 7-9. Which would be just perfect enough for the idiots running the show to say “well, if we’d had Revis and Santonio…” and then bring the entire circus back for 2013.

  18. Little Earthquake says: Dec 5, 2012 8:49 AM

Whatever, can the NYC stations please show a more interesting game?

  19. cuda1234 says: Dec 5, 2012 8:49 AM

McElroy looked like the best qb in preseason and looked like the best qb last week. Does that count for anything?

  20. cuda1234 says: Dec 5, 2012 8:53 AM

I love the Tebowwmaniacs who think that the depth chart matters and claim that since Timmy’s been listed at the #2 all year he should be the next man up.

I just wonder why they weren’t sticking up for the #2 guy in Denver last year. Once again, Tebowmaniacs show they are delusional.

  21. vicksprman says: Dec 5, 2012 8:53 AM

Well in all honesty they are playing the Jags and Rex is probably hoping to build some sort of confidence for Sanchez. Now having said that if they lose Sanchez is done.

  22. Spencer says: Dec 5, 2012 8:53 AM

I’ve rarely seen a coach self-sabotage like this over a quarterback.

  23. brownsclown says: Dec 5, 2012 8:53 AM

Braylon Edwards is in front of the JETS practice facility Tebowing! Do it! Sign the man!

That way you can be sure that you have a QB who can’t throw passing to a receiver that can’t catch!
And on top of that, he has ‘gorgeous’ feet!

  24. jetsfansince1968 says: Dec 5, 2012 8:53 AM

This move insures Rex Ryan will be fired this season

  25. whiteknightblackheart says: Dec 5, 2012 8:54 AM

This is smart. I think the only reason the Jets got Tebow in the first place was so that Josh McDaniels in NE didn’t, but here lies an opportunity to showcase #15 for Khan. They have no clear answers for QB down there, and with Sanchez as the one, Tebow can come back and be the 2 and get reps. Maybe a lot of them. It won’t take too much to beat this team, and if they can deal Tebow for a 4th in the offseason it will be worth it. If Sanchex stinks up awful in this game, name McELroy the starter next week.

  26. karl422 says: Dec 5, 2012 9:00 AM

I have been a fan since 1964 and I have never been more disgusted with a Coach and GM. I was looking forward to Greg McElroy getting a full week of practice and starting the Jag game just to see what he brings to the table. It is clear now that Rex and MT have their wagons attached to Mark Sanchez butt and will ride it to the bottom of the NFL. I can’t wait for all three to be gone.

  27. flash1283 says: Dec 5, 2012 9:15 AM

Remember just a couple of months ago all the Jet fans telling how great the team is and how they are going to be a playoff contender. Now , fast forward 2 months and those same fans are nowhere to be found! The Jets are the laughing stock of the NFL. Browns and Raiders fans are even clowning them!

  28. myopinionisrighterthanyours says: Dec 5, 2012 9:19 AM

So then why the H E double hockey sticks did the J E T S bring in Tebow in the first place. To me, that move had all the makings of at least trying to attempt to light a fire under the Sanchize’s butt, but it’s clear all along that the Sanchize’s entitlement came because he knew no matter what he would be the starter. At this point, McElroy gives you the best chance to win. For all of Tannebaum’s faults … and maybe he should go after this year, too … Rex HAS to go. Hopefully Jets fans are waking up to this realiztion. The whole franchise needs a white-wash.

  29. mattolikesthevikes says: Dec 5, 2012 9:23 AM

Must be thinking draft picks at this point.

  30. tincansailor981 says: Dec 5, 2012 9:23 AM

What does he have to lose? He’s going to be fired at the end of the season anyway.

  31. dlw492 says: Dec 5, 2012 9:24 AM

I dislike the JETS- would rather see Cleveland win any day (at least they play harder)
*not a fan of either, but at least Cleveland plays 4 quarters

  32. weepingjebus says: Dec 5, 2012 9:24 AM

The saddest thing is that I think even Sanchez is upset with this decision. At this point all he probably wants to do is stay home and play with his blocks.

  33. ohnothatguy says: Dec 5, 2012 9:27 AM

If im a jets defensive player i wouldnt show up for the game. Just like arizona you cant blame the defense for the record. How much more can you tolerate with that pathetic qb? If jets fans really want sanchez gone dont go to a game and see how fast woody cans all 4, rex, mike, mark and sparano. Once his pockets starts to hurt he will make changes until then he wont care. This is actually patethic. I been saying on this thread since week 1 forget stankchez start mcelroy!! He came in and there was a sudden spark to the team. Rex deserves to get canned! Any1 saying oh sanchez doesnt have an offense blah blah blah, look at the team they playing sunday. Does henne have a team? And look what he did there once he became the starter they actually got an offense going. I love the circus the jets are bc so many people have their eye on them and its amazing to see such a junk team get so much hype. Rex was right when he said they will paint the town green over blue, to bad its only in the tabloids and not on the gridiron.

  34. toybkshr says: Dec 5, 2012 9:36 AM

I think they’re aiming for a higher draft position!

  35. dadofthedecade says: Dec 5, 2012 9:37 AM

McElroy and Tebow might be the only two quarterbacks in the NFL that are worse than Sanchez.

If the these dopes were on the Simpsons, the entire episode would consist of Nelson pointing at them and saying “ha-ha!”

  36. nflofficeadmin says: Dec 5, 2012 9:40 AM

At this point, Tebow won’t even lay his hands on these irrepentant sinners. Let them go straight to hell.

  37. geauxjay says: Dec 5, 2012 9:42 AM

    Nobody cares about the Jets.

  38. llfreedman says: Dec 5, 2012 9:45 AM

I’ve come to the conclusion, Rex realizes he’s going to lose either way (aka he’s getting fired or at least they aren’t making the playoffs), so he might as well be loyal to his guy…

    No other real explanation right?

  39. wired4games says: Dec 5, 2012 9:47 AM

Seems we fans had a glimmer of hope that things would change. Guess not. But we also have to understand that they have a contract with Sanchez for some years. Personally I would like to see him benched. They owe it to the fans.

  40. gpack22 says: Dec 5, 2012 9:49 AM

Not even close to a fan of the Jets but have to kind of feel for those who are. This B-Team is managed by such idiots that this isn’t even about football anymore. It’s more of “How can we add to the circus this week”!!!! Rex has zero business being a HC.

  41. barrywhererufrom says: Dec 5, 2012 9:50 AM

I do not know if Rex has a press conference on Wednesdays..i don’t think so..but him and that other moron Mr. T have some serious explaining to do. What has Sanchez done to deserve to keep his starting job? They never won because of him and he has regressed as a quaterback..same mistake after mistake..redzone picks..throwing passes up for grabs..shoot in McElroy’s limited time he led the Jets to basically two scores..we saw what Sanchez did against the Cardinals..well look at this way Sanchez is now wrapped around Rex’s and Mr. T neck..as a Jet fan I will laugh when they both get fired because of it..

  42. toybkshr says: Dec 5, 2012 9:52 AM

Just change the headline of the article, substitute suck for stick.

  43. boyshole25 says: Dec 5, 2012 9:52 AM

Sporano almost ruined henne and now he will finish the job on Sanchez

  44. ebr362 says: Dec 5, 2012 9:55 AM

And with their first pick in the 2013 NFL Draft the NewYork Jets pick quarterback…………?

  45. harry1941 says: Dec 5, 2012 10:10 AM

Rex Ryan is trying to save his job. Intead of thinking about the 2013 draft, he wants to win the remaining games. I want the Jets to pick running-back Giovani Bernard of NC. I fear he will be gone before the Jets get on the board. This guy is like a Cutis Martin. He can cut and make players on defense miss. The Jets need another Cutis Martin. This guy can also be a wide receiver.

  46. miamisilvio says: Dec 5, 2012 10:54 AM

Upon hearing this, the Jags defensive backfield were seen high fiving each other and starting a pool for who gets the most interceptions, emphasis on plural!

  47. cornbredd says: Dec 5, 2012 10:55 AM

This logic always amazes me. If Sanchez is guaranteed $8M for next year, the cost is sunk and the Jets will have to pay it whether he plays or not. Future wages owed should not mandate you to play a QB that does not give you a very good chance to win. Win, loss, cut, you have to pay the guy – why not get over that and figure out how to give your team the best chance to win?

  48. marko959 says: Dec 5, 2012 10:55 AM

Some talented assistant coaches are not cut out to be head coaches. Put Rex Ryan on that list….right next to his father.

  49. emma333 says: Dec 5, 2012 10:58 AM

So Tebow picked the Jets over the Jaguars because he “felt more wanted there”. Wow, I have to wonder what he is thinking now. The Jets have certainly mishandled this situation, but Tim needed to understand that the media capital of the world had some drawbacks, especially if he was really wanted to be a quarterback.

  50. whatnojets says: Dec 5, 2012 11:34 AM

Only three head coaches in the history of the New York Jets franchise had a winning record:

    Bill Parcells 29-19
    Al Groh 9-7
    Rex Ryan 28-20

    That tells you something!

  51. Akula says: Dec 5, 2012 11:46 AM

On behalf of all Pats fans may I say……..

Rex, keep up the good work. Give Sanchez all the chances in the world this year and next.

  52. h1ndrix says: Dec 5, 2012 11:57 AM

And the most picked up player in fantasy football leagues just in time for the playoffs? The Jaguars defense.

  53. mannyicey says: Dec 5, 2012 11:58 AM

Rex Ryan is done in NY. He knows it. Everyone knows it. Now, he’s just doing some things to get a little satisfaction for everyone. I don’t think that Ryan doesn’t like Tebow, so he’s going to put him in the best position.

Sanchez will start and suck, as usual. What little confidence Sanchez had is gone, so he’s a backup right now. Tebow basically took it all and didn’t get upset or question anything in the media. He was available. So Ryan’s going to pay him back by allowing him to come off the bench against the Jags, his stadium- so they can get used to cheering for their quarterback for next season.

And McElroy’s going to start the rest of the season because McElroy’s their future quarterback.

And they all live Happily Ever After…

  54. deadguy73 says: Dec 5, 2012 12:05 PM

    Not a Jets fan.

But… the reality is, Sanchez is the Jets best QB. I’ve seen some bad play from him, but I’ve also seen many dropped balls and just poor execution.

Also, Ryan is a good coach. Before they run him out of town, think about all the bad years the Jets have had prior. Rex at least put the Jets in the discussion.

Reactionary fans kill me. There isn’t much separation between winning and losing in the NFL. Best bet would be to stay the course and let them try to correct whats wrong.
Not popular, but true. Hell, we have some idiots that would run Tomlin out after two losses.

  55. detroitsports1234 says: Dec 5, 2012 12:28 PM

Jets have a good chance of making the playoffs, they have an easy schedule ahead of them. But Mark Sanchez needs to perform at a higher level an needs to minimize the turnovers. With the four teams they have to play all have losing records and the close wildcard race in the NFC it is really possible.

  56. randomguy9999 says: Dec 5, 2012 12:33 PM

he’s gonna stick with Sanchez, the guy who is never working on the sideline…. down by 6 with 2 minutes left? relaxing and joking on the bench… that’s Sanchez

they should play McElroy… Sanchez is done and Tebow never was a QB, unless you you are delusional and call 90 yards and less than 1 TD a game a QB

  57. capone888 says: Dec 5, 2012 12:47 PM

Sanchez should start. He’s earned it. Oh wait…. nevermind.

  58. steelerben says: Dec 5, 2012 1:28 PM

Anyone think that maybe the Jets are doing Tebow a favor by not putting him on the field?

Why tarnish his “winner” image by trotting him out into an impossible situation? The Jets were only able to sneak past the Cardinals with Greg “check out our fractured lockerroom” McElroy because the Cards were trying out their latest QB disaster. Keep Tebow on the bench and have his mystique live on. Next year, trade him to the Kansas City Chiefs and get some value out of him.
