Jim Harbaugh hearing it from 49ers over “Saved by the Bell” cameo

In 1996, Jim Harbaugh, then the quarterback of the Colts, made a guest appearance on Saved by the Bell: The New Class. That episode was posted to YouTube and became a viral video recently, and Harbaugh hasn’t heard the end of it.

The first question at Harbaugh’s press conference on Wednesday was about his appearance, and Harbaugh confirmed that everyone from his wife to his players have made fun of him about it.

“A lot of people have been mentioning that lately,” Harbaugh said. “I don’t know why it’s become so popular. My wife told me about it, and a few players did. So they’ve been making quite a bit of sport of me over that.”

(For the unaware, “making quite a bit of sport of me” is a Sling Blade reference. Sling Blade came out in 1996. Apparently Harbaugh was really into popular entertainment back then.)

Harbaugh also noted that in the episode of Saved By the Bell, he knocked Screech over with a slap on the back. Harbaugh compared that to his controversial handshake with Lions coach Jim Schwartz. Now that the Saved by the Bell cameo has come to light, that handshake is no better than the second-most embarrassing moment of Harbaugh’s career.

The man obviously has a screw loose in his head.

  2. bigbluebruiser says: Dec 6, 2012 7:17 AM

Alex Smith is Screech. Colin Kaepernick is A.C. Slater.

    It all makes sense now.

  3. wtf2812 says: Dec 6, 2012 7:27 AM

The man has become an arrogant jerk. Never saw that coming a couple years ago.

  4. inharmswhey says: Dec 6, 2012 7:27 AM

Because he accepted money for showing up on a kid’s tv show as himself and delivering a positive message? Yeah, real looney bin material there, “joetoronto”.

  5. wte1 says: Dec 6, 2012 7:29 AM

More people have now seen Harbaugh in that youtube video than when the episode was televised back in 1996.

    What a horrible show.

  6. sportsmeccabi says: Dec 6, 2012 7:30 AM

Screech could still play quarterback for the jets.

  10. 4t9er says: Dec 6, 2012 7:39 AM

JoeToronto, you should concern yourself with the Raiders only as your hatred of the 49ers is well documented.

  11. norcalirish says: Dec 6, 2012 7:47 AM

Dude, that is really funny. I’d harass him forever over that.

  13. rickyspanish says: Dec 6, 2012 7:51 AM

As a lifelong Seahawk fan, I can’t help myself from enjoying Harbaugh’s razzmatazz. Love him or hate him, he sure is entertaining.

  14. bronco1991 says: Dec 6, 2012 7:53 AM

Still smiling over the video. Harbaugh = my new hero.

Saved by the bell the new class sucked … I loved the old class ( Kelly , Lisa and Jesse ) .. Throw in the resort years with Stacy carosi.. Who’s still hot till this day ( Leah remini)

joetoronto is right and it has nothing to do with his cameo on that stupid show. The guy is a nut-job.

  18. musicman495 says: Dec 6, 2012 8:07 AM

Harbaugh was a lot more charming before he knew everything.

  19. humbleminded85 says: Dec 6, 2012 8:07 AM

  20. hart089 says: Dec 6, 2012 8:09 AM

Proof that handshakegate was just a normal handshae for Harbaugh

  21. chi01town says: Dec 6, 2012 8:13 AM

Alex Smith should make a mess over there. He need to be standing in front of a camera SAYING ” I want out NOW!!” Smith is pissed and he should show it EVERY CHANCE HE GET.

Bob Golic was the RA named Mike Rogers. Only remember that cause it is my dad’s name. See NFL ties all in the show!

    But Zack I need them!!!!

The NFL has a long and proud tradition of it’s stars appearing on quality prime time television. Harbaugh is hardly alone in his cameo regret.

I saw Ed “Too Tall” Jones in a particularly bad episode of Diffrent Strokes. Somehow Arnold ends up on the ledge of their tenth story apartment building, forcing TooTall to climb out and save him despite his profound fear of heights.

Then there was the infamous Lawrence Taylor appearance on T.J. Hooker in which LT assists Shatner by running down and tackling an elusive drug dealer. In the climactic action sequence of that same episode, both Shatner and LT end up on the hood of a large pimp-mobile as it barrels down the highway. Ultimately they succeed in overpowering the driver and freeing the young ladies trapped in his servitude.

    Just watched his cameo and two words sum it up;

    DOUCHE CHILLS!

  28. huffdaddyco says: Dec 6, 2012 8:39 AM

After Screech was knocked over, Harbaugh was flagged for unnecessary roughness and whined about the call for four years.

  29. ken49ers says: Dec 6, 2012 8:58 AM

Harbs is such a cool guy, I’m sure the video will get more hits than “Gangnam Style”

  30. bigbluebruiser says: Dec 6, 2012 9:13 AM

Kaepernick has a pet turtle named Sammy. As in Samuel “Screech” Powers.

    This gets better and better.

  31. mjkelly77 says: Dec 6, 2012 10:47 AM

Don’t make sport of Hairbough. He’ll punch you in the back and then run away.

  32. mjkelly77 says: Dec 6, 2012 10:55 AM

Wow. I see a lot of 49er fans defend Hairbough against comments that are really the truth. He is a deluded egomaniac who’s one call against the 49ers from having his head explode.

  33. waxthat says: Dec 6, 2012 10:58 AM

Top 3 coach in the league. The rest of you blowhards can continue sulking in your teams misery.

  34. bh83 says: Dec 6, 2012 11:48 AM

Does everyone else refer to A.C. Slater when they sit the wrong way on a chair like I do?

  35. billb49 says: Dec 6, 2012 12:03 PM

    Coach of the year.
One of the top three coaches in the league.
    Quarterback miracle worker.
Puts together one of the best staffs in the league.
Dedicated to missionary work for the poor every off-season.
    Passionate off the scale.
And, yes, pretty funny and quirky.

Poor Harbaugh haters. Stewing in their bitterness.

Niner players are with you 100%. I read that they’re in full tilt harassment mode and Harbaugh is taking it with good humor.

You know, if the Niners are somehow able to win out and make it to the Superbowl this year, one of the most satisfying aspects of it will be to know that bitter Harbaugh-haters everywhere are crying big wet tears and desperately trying to keep their own heads from exploding.

  38. bigradiobox says: Dec 6, 2012 12:13 PM

It’s amazing to me that all the harbaugh haters can do is sling juvenile personal attacks against the guy, when they don’t have a leg to stand on to attack his football acumen.

Yes, because acting like a child would really look good for him and his future with the Niners or a different team. If you’re looking for drama watch E!, buddy.
