I think the New Orleans Spirits would be an awesome name. They would have to have a cool logo though so that no one would think they meant spirits as in “rah rah”.

If I’m not mistaken, I think Benson owns the rights to the “Pelicans” from when the baseball team left New Orleans- thats why the minor league team is stuck w/ the Zephyrs (which was actually carried over from Colorado).

Benson bought the Hornets, the Times-Picayune (local newspaper), paid Drew Brees, and donated 10 million dollars to a local high school- so naturally, he would skimp any possible new trademark costs by naming the team the Pelicans.

On another note, the SLC minor league team is actually called the Bees, so Hornets fits better (not saying much) up there.

Pelicans was the name of the old New Orleans Southern League baseball team for many years, so it’s a nice nod to tradition. As for the Jazz, living here in Utah I’ve hoped for a while that the Hornets & Jazz would swap nicknames. After all, we are the Beehive State.

The problem is the name means nothing in NO. It means something in Charlotte (Revolutionary War reference – Charlotte was called a hornet’s nest by a British general). It was dumb for Utah to take the name Jazz, and dumb for Shinn to take the Hornets. Why isn’t Utah the one looking for a new name?

I live in New Orleans and I hate the idea of NO Pelicans. With this city’s rich culture and history and Mr. Benson comes up with….Pelicans….just Pelicans. It’s pathetic and unlikely to stir up enthusiasm in a city devoted to the Saints.

Fossils of the sabertooth cat Smilodon have actually been found in Louisiana, so they do have some ties to the state, however minor. I always did like that name. New Orleans wants the name “Jazz” back, but Utah inexplicably doesn’t want to give it up and the latest request to Commish David Stern was denied.

Nothing wrong with Pelicans. Plenty of non threatening team names out there. Celtics, Kings, Lakers, Pistons, etc
The perfect name would be the New Orleans Voodoo but our lame ass Arena league team has that. Termites might not be too bad

I live here and can assure anyone that we have our fair share of hornets! Anyway, the Pelicans were a minor league baseball team (we now have the Zephyrs) back in the day. Why not throw a few bucks to Utah and get the Jazz name and our Mardi Gras colors back!

A Nutria (Essentially a beaver type animal) is an exotic species that has destroyed countless properties in the southern coast states….literally millions of them washed up after the storms last year.

Ragin Cajuns gets my vote, what an awesome nickname.
