Darren McFadden re-injures ankle in loss to Broncos

Darren McFadden AP

Oakland Raiders running back Darren McFadden played for the first time in five weeks Thursday night against the Denver Broncos.

Now he may be sidelined once again.

According to Vic Tafur of the San Francisco Chronicle, Raiders head coach Dennis Allen said McFadden was unable to finish the game Thursday night after re-injuring his ankle. Allen said he didn’t know the severity of the injury.

McFadden missed the last four games after suffering a high-ankle sprain against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers on Nov. 4. McFadden carried the ball 11 times for 52 yards and caught two passes for 12 yards and a touchdown in his first game back.

McFadden carried for six yards on a 1st and 10 with 6:56 left in the game. The Raiders only ran two more offensive plays after that carry by McFadden so it seems likely to assume the injury occurred on one on those final three plays.

This guy is an annual injury waiting to happen. Sheesh talk about bad luck. If the raiders didn’t have bad luck they’d have no luck.

  11. favresweiner says: Dec 7, 2012 1:46 AM

This dude just can’t stay healthy. It is real unfortunate because when he is healthy, he is one of the best running backs in the league.

This guy just can’t stay healthy.

Part of my wants to say that a lot of this is because he just hasn’t been able to get over past injuries mentally. I know from personal experience, when you get back from an injury – most people instinctively hesitate. Hesitation makes you go in softer than usual, and that’s when injuries happen.

I’m not suggesting he’s soft, but I have to think that there’s more to this than just bad luck – he’s REPEATEDLY injured. Maybe getting the guy a shrink or giving him enough time to mentally strengthen his game is what he needs to get back to form.

A great RB when he’s healthy, but looking more and more like he doesn’t have what it takes to have the kind of career we’ve seen from prolific runners like AP who have successfully returned from major injuries.

  19. zombiebuddha says: Dec 7, 2012 3:31 AM

It’s time for the Raiders to trade him and get all the value they can. The dude just can’t stay healthy. This is why I wish we would’ve gotten Cedric Benson in the offseason. (I know he’s injured right now, but maybe he wouldn’t have been in Oakland.)

  20. denverdude7 says: Dec 7, 2012 4:28 AM

As a Bronco fan, there is not much I like about the Raiders. Darren McFadden is probably the lone exception. I would like to see what this young man could do if blessed with a full healthy season. Come back soon Darren.

  21. randallflagg52 says: Dec 7, 2012 4:42 AM

Still can’t believe this guy was picked ahead of Ray Rice and Matt Forte…

Oh well, guess there’s a reason the raiders are the raiders and the Bears and Ravens are always in the hunt for a Lombardi.

  22. joetoronto says: Dec 7, 2012 5:02 AM

What’s needed to beat Denver is a big running game. Once you get in a position where you have to pass, you have problems.

I can see a team like Houston giving the Bronco’s trouble.

  23. AlohaMrHand says: Dec 7, 2012 5:11 AM

    Darren McFragile needs to go.

  24. sicklnick121 says: Dec 7, 2012 6:05 AM

What does it matter now anyway, give the guy rest. There is something so far off on this team I just dont know what it is. That 80 yard scoring drive, who the hell was calling the plays? They looked unstoppable! I thought wow this could be a break out a gelling point with this offense. WRONG!!!!

  25. steviekthr3e says: Dec 7, 2012 6:31 AM

time to trim the fat. Trade him for a 4th or 5th rounder. E for Effort Mr. Glass, I mean, D-Mac.

Has this guy ever played a complete season?

  31. chalkruz1989 says: Dec 7, 2012 7:32 AM

What is the problem with this guy anymore? I remember I watched a story about him during his junior season at Arkansas and my step-father saying this guy is going to get hurt a lot in the NFL. I thought he was just being snide but he said look at his legs, he’s not big enough in his bottom half to survive ‘cue the bottom half jokes :) .’

But in all seriousness, his legs are really skinny and when comparing them to guys such as Adrian Peterson, Arian Foster, and MJD, it’s pretty obvious.

  32. Gordon says: Dec 7, 2012 7:33 AM

    Just call him Mr. Glass

  33. dkrauss93 says: Dec 7, 2012 7:41 AM

This guy has all the talent to be a top 5 RB. A couple yrs ago he was leading the NFL in rushing yards until he got hurt. I always believe you need to have a good running back to be a successful team but this is also why they have less amount of value then alot of other positions.

  34. cmdrsmooth says: Dec 7, 2012 7:43 AM

    Bust.

  35. FinFan68 says: Dec 7, 2012 7:43 AM

This guy is brittle. Talent is useless on the bench.

  36. gibbyfan says: Dec 7, 2012 7:51 AM

I think if you look back at how the Raiders fared with their first round picks over the past ten years it tells you everything you need to know about why they are where they are. A combination of bad luck and incompetence has proven too much to overcome. I think McFadden certainly falls into the bad luck category.

  37. torturedraiderfan says: Dec 7, 2012 7:56 AM

Injured again? Are you kidding me? Can we get a draft pick for this guy? Time to clean house Reggie. We need players that are smart, dedicated and on the field.

  38. sakebombs says: Dec 7, 2012 7:57 AM

    McFrustrating…

  39. totallyuselessme says: Dec 7, 2012 8:20 AM

    Feel bad for this guy.

Less so career wise(he’s already paid) and moreso because at this rate he’s basically got the choice between retirement and leaving himself crippled and in pain for the rest of his life.

  40. gibbyfan says: Dec 7, 2012 8:21 AM

Chalkruz —If that’s a true story , and I dont doubt that it is (something is obviously wrong with this guy) it’s pretty sad it wasnt picked up by the NFL scouts. Too bad AL didnt see what your step dad saw.

You and your step-father are stupid. DMC and Felix Jones shared the load at Arkansas. They never had to be an every down back which is why they are both struggling to stay healthy.

  45. eastcoastniner says: Dec 7, 2012 8:57 AM

His injury rating on Madden should be 5.

  46. omniusprime says: Dec 7, 2012 9:28 AM

Geez McFragile is injured again, what a surprise. Time to dump this perennial benchwarmer and bring in a running back who can actually last through an entire 16 game season and the playoffs. Another overrated SEC trash player who has been nothing but disappointing in the NFL.

It’s sad how the whole team sucks, but the Raiders are a franchise in total disarray. Where is Big Al Davis when we really need him? I hope all the Big Al detractors who are Raider fans now realize how good we had it when Big Al was making decisions.

We can only hope that Jon Gruden comes back to coach this pathetic excuse for a commitment to excellence. Please Jon, you’re our only hope.

    Dump McFragile!!!

  47. mullman76 says: Dec 7, 2012 9:34 AM

@chargersdiehard- Mathews is a joke who will wash out of the league in a couple years because he can’t hold onto the ball. Please concern yourself with your own debacle in san diego.

McFadden being hurt is bad luck, 10x over. It is what it is. Big Reg better hit a home run with he Top 5 pick the RAIDERS are going to have come draft day.

  48. zonedogz says: Dec 7, 2012 9:40 AM

Bill Parcels thinks she’ll be OK.

  49. eastcoastniner says: Dec 7, 2012 10:41 AM

And we thought Fragile Fred Taylor was injury-prone. New king of the “fragile” nickname. McFragile…nice!

  50. kmfl1 says: Dec 7, 2012 11:41 AM

He picked the wrong profession when he picked a contact sport. To set your team’s fortunes on this guy is foolhardy. Let him go and he’ll be somebody else’s problem. No sense trading him…who’d give you something for a guy who won’t play, anyway?

  51. brobb63 says: Dec 7, 2012 2:12 PM

McFadden needs to go…trade him…Jamarcus Jr. earn your keep ..man up.. We have Marcel and Stewart pick up somebody in the draft. What a waste of a top draft pick.. McKenzie will assess this situation and do what needs to be done.

  52. ottomac says: Dec 7, 2012 3:10 PM

Darren Sproles isn’t elite but he makes some plays when you need them. Run DMC is good for about 20 carries a game max on a regular basis. If we can pay him accordingly I’d love to keep him. He’s a complete football player. He can through the ball, he’s a great blocker and he can break the big one when healthy. We just need to use him right and go out and get us another quality back in the draft. Get rid of Jones and Goodson keep Stewart.

  53. radrntn says: Dec 7, 2012 7:41 PM

raiders need to buy a case of dynamite a blow this team up.

  54. copdoc says: Dec 7, 2012 8:04 PM

    You think they won’t?

Big Al is gone. “Big Mac” is going to do a number on expensive and unproductive players in the off season. Once we have some cap space, and draft football players instead of track guys playing football, (like the 2 rookie wideouts he found last year in the draft), we’ll be good.

Everybody on defense better be ready cause that’s where the bomb is going to drop the most.

  55. ottomac says: Dec 8, 2012 10:25 AM

I agree. A lot of changes on defense.

  56. jmartin1375 says: Dec 21, 2012 11:51 PM

Please bro demand a trade, do anything to get traded or cut. You have done enough to this team, and then blame it on play calling. You simply can not play like you did before the lisfranc. You injured excuse making, no production having ….. nvm… Just get the f*ck out of Oakland.
