APFormer Kansas State quarterback Collin Klein had a shot of espresso with the Texans last weekend, participating in minicamp on a tryout basis but not getting a contract.
Despite no offers from any of the other 31 NFL teams, Klein isn’t giving up.
“I’m still positive. I’m just loving what I’m doing,” Klein recently told Jeff Legwold of the Denver Post. “All I can do is try to be the best I can be. There are ups and downs in life, but I’m staying positive.”
Former NFL quarterback Jake Plummer, who has been working with Klein, understandably vouches for the 2012 Heisman finalist.
“People just need to check him out in person,” Plummer said. “His skills are evolving, and he has a lot of work to do, but a lot of guys have a lot of work to do. . . . Throwing the ball, footwork, arm, all those things, the skills are there even if some desk jockey on TV says they’re not.”
Regardless of anything any “desk jockey” says, the guys who hold the keys to NFL contracts have yet to welcome Klein to camp, even at a time when rosters can hold up to 90 players.
“I told him just keep working,” Plummer said. “This journey he’s on might take some time, but if he believes and stays positive, he can have a chance. I have a hard time believing, looking at the quality of backup quarterbacks around the league, that there isn’t a place for him to go learn.”
But there isn’t. The Texans took a close look at him, and they passed. No one else is even willing to take a close look.
We admire Klein for stubbornly chasing his dream, but he needs to do whatever he can to get reps elsewhere, in any league he can find work. Before anyone realizes it, another crop of former college quarterbacks will be vying for NFL jobs, and Klein quickly will be forgotten if he doesn’t quickly find a way to get noticed.
