Adrian Peterson eyes Eric Dickerson’s record

Peterson Getty Images

Vikings running back Adrian Peterson needs 400 yards in three games to get to 2,000 for the season.

He wants at least 506.

With that amount, he’d break the single-season rushing record set by Hall of Famer Eric Dickerson in 1984.  Dickerson rushed for 2,105 yards in a 16-game season.

Peterson told Peter King of Sports Illustrated after Sunday’s 21-14 win over the Bears that Peterson is targeting Dickerson’s record.

Peterson will get a chance in seven days to take a chunk out of the remaining gap against the team for which Dickerson played when he set the record — the Rams.

  2. jebdamone says: Dec 9, 2012 8:00 PM

i love you AP but there is no way you are getting over 2000 yards if you garbage QB keeps playing the way he has

  3. jakec4 says: Dec 9, 2012 8:00 PM

At the rate he’s going Dickerson is going to fall. Peterson is the most memorable back since Barry Sanders.

  4. glowingstone says: Dec 9, 2012 8:02 PM

As much as I loathe the Vikings, I hope he gets it. Anybody who can put up those kinds of numbers despite playing on an offense with no passing game whatsoever deserves it.

  5. enochmh2 says: Dec 9, 2012 8:03 PM

take it a day at a time AD,no need to put any pressure on yourself

  6. smithviking69 says: Dec 9, 2012 8:04 PM

You can do it AP! Carry this team on your back and kick some butt! Skol Vikings!

  7. vikesfansteve says: Dec 9, 2012 8:04 PM

Hope he gets at least 2000.

  8. bovice23 says: Dec 9, 2012 8:07 PM

Houston and STL’s defenses are both pretty good. If he gets to 2,000 it’ll be quite the accomplishment. Not sure if 505 is possible but if anyone can do it, it’s this man

  9. jabeus says: Dec 9, 2012 8:08 PM

AD = Best running back of all time!

  10. conormacleod says: Dec 9, 2012 8:15 PM

Rams. Texans. Packers. He already ran for 210 against the Packers last week. And 9 in the box today couldn’t stop him. He’s busting off huge chunks by getting past those first 8-9 guys in the box. What kind of rush defenses do the Rams and Texans have?

  11. mcdeez22 says: Dec 9, 2012 8:15 PM

Ummm… Why are we calling him AD??? Adrian Deterson is a great running back.

  12. decon49 says: Dec 9, 2012 8:17 PM

i drafted him in the 4th round of our draft. steal!!

  13. billbrasky72 says: Dec 9, 2012 8:17 PM

It’s possible. Vikes play Rams, Texans, and Packers. Texans might be tough, but he could probably go for another 200+ against Green Bay.

  14. thraiderskin says: Dec 9, 2012 8:19 PM

Peterson is, beyond any argument, the best RB in the league. I say that, because people are always looking for some new great, but none of them can even hang with #28. Good luck to you AD, players like you should be the ones breaking the records.

  15. mp4philly says: Dec 9, 2012 8:24 PM

MVP of the league hands down. Too bad the Vikes have a terrible qb and likely won’t make the playoffs.

  16. samtheram says: Dec 9, 2012 8:24 PM

  19. billhicks666 says: Dec 9, 2012 8:28 PM

The fact that Peterson can even consider going for the single-season rushing record a mere year after shredding his knee, is nothing short of incredible. He is without a doubt a candidate for the greatest RB of all-time. I don’t think he is, but he’s on the short list, anyway. Top 5 for sure.

  27. htowntexan says: Dec 9, 2012 9:10 PM

this guy amazes me every single week. writers are running out of adjectives to describe the groove he’s in right now. i am not a vikes fan, but this guy owns the NFL right now. if i had a vote for MVP it’s AD no doubt.

i watched barry get his 2k years ago, and i think this season AD has had thus far is more impressive, if nothing else than for the willpower he’s shown to come back from an injury that can claim careers, not to mention a following season.

Guarenteed AP’s #1 goal is playoffs. He is a TEAM player and would gladly trade #’s for wins. Witn that being said, I hope he breaks the record. If the Vikes had a descent QB he would already have 2000.

    mcdeez22 says:

    ——————————————————

Wow. The ignorance. AD stands for ALL DAY as others on here have told you. He’s had that nickname since his days at Oklahoma (That’s a college team for those of you who don’t know why Adrian Peterson is nicknamed AD). Apparently you aren’t too football or player savvy, or you would have known that.

Why do people post things when they don’t have a clue?

  32. phloorioisanarcissist says: Dec 9, 2012 9:40 PM

For those that are trash talking AD (That’s ALL DAY Adrian Peterson for the educationally challenged), he is likely saying that more to get defenses to load up the box and bring in the safeties in order to draw more attention to the running game and take pressure off his struggling QB.

If the last 4 teams he plays concentrate solely on him, that SHOULD open things up for his QB and receivers. Nobody wants Peterson to break the record on them. Peterson is as smart a RB as there is in the NFL, and one of the least selfish players ever. Also as humble a guy as you’ll ever meet. Kudos to him if he does break it, but I’m sure that’s not what he’s concentrating on.

Add in the fact that he’s coming off season ending ACL surgery, this should be the comeback story of the decade, but because he plays for the small market franchise Vikings, he doesn’t get the recognition he deserves. If he played for the Packers, Giants, or Cowboys, he would be the center of attention nearly every week.

  33. taintedsaints2009 says: Dec 9, 2012 9:44 PM

Vikings won’t make the playoffs even if they win out because they lost to all the wild card teams in contention for that last spot. They would only get in if all those teams lost, which won’t happen.

Feed that monster the ball and don’t ever, ever let ponder throw a pass again. Peterson probably would have gone for 200 today if the Vikings had not wasted time having ponder throw.

  34. sterling7 says: Dec 9, 2012 9:54 PM

Being a Minnesota Viking 4 life since 1968-I eye a passing game!

  35. tdrundmc says: Dec 9, 2012 9:58 PM

I could see him running for 300 yards against the Packers defense. The Lions don’t know how to run the ball and their doing it pretty effectively tonight.

  36. vikefan says: Dec 9, 2012 10:13 PM

……..& just think how good he would be on a team with a passing game, decent qb & wr’s that get separation!! GO AD….run us to & thru the playoffs

  37. ne4789 says: Dec 9, 2012 10:21 PM

Props for Peterson’s amazing year but did we all forget that he came of an ACL and magically didn’t miss one regular season game? He is super human good for you AP!

  38. Mr. Wright 212 says: Dec 9, 2012 10:45 PM

Peterson is averaging 155 per game over the past 6, even with Ponder’s shoddy play. He’ll get 2,000, but 2,106… I dunno.

  43. The Prophet says: Dec 9, 2012 11:10 PM

Texans have an elite rushing defense, but if they clinch their #1 seed before this game, Adrian will face a 2nd effort group of second stringers and will run wild.

  44. thejuddstir says: Dec 9, 2012 11:15 PM

It’s scarey to think what AD would do if his team had any kind of a passing game. AD is doing this with 8-9 guys in the box just concentrating on stopping him. AD is the true beast when it comes to RB’s.

  45. codyleerobertson says: Dec 9, 2012 11:20 PM

AP won’t even put up 100 against the Texans. Ponder will be trying the pass the whole game by the end of the first half because we’ll be ahead by so much already by then.

  46. Mr. Wright 212 says: Dec 9, 2012 11:30 PM

I love how Texans fans think they are invincible or something. That 3-4 defense has never been an issue for him. He will get 165 on Houston. Starters or not.

It’s funny how high and mighty some of these fans are(Rams,Texans) sure ponder is inconsistent but we have beat some good teams 49ers come to mind .. Not to mention AD has shredded almost all the teams we’ve played great D 8-9 in the box or not any giving Sunday

  51. joeygoesglobal says: Dec 10, 2012 12:17 AM

  52. Mr. Wright 212 says: Dec 10, 2012 12:18 AM

Enough about Foster. And Morris for that matter. There’s a reason Foster wasn’t drafted and why no one wanted Morris. These guys would be Curtis Enis outside of their zone blocking schemes. Foster isn’t dynamic enough to do what Peterson, McCoy, Gore, etc. do. Same with Morris. take them out of those stretch play runs and they’re 3.4 yard per carry guys.

Peterson is running against eight and nine man fronts. Stop it.

  53. pmgfootball says: Dec 10, 2012 12:51 AM

If Ponder didn’t throw away the game in Green Bay, we would be looking at a wild card spot

  54. bobnelsonjr says: Dec 10, 2012 1:10 AM

    1) The guy doesn’t win games for his team. The only ones who might care are children who still play “fantasy” football.

    2) He plays for the vikings. Considering that they have always come up short in their brief history, he is more likely to get 1998 yards than 2001.

    3) The vikings will finish the season under .500 and nobody cares about those who sell their integrity prostituting themselves for meaningless statistics.

    4) Running backs just don’t matter.

“Vikings won’t make the playoffs even if they win out because they lost to all the wild card teams in contention for that last spot.

You do realize when more than 1 team is tied for a wild card spot it goes to conference record right…Vikings are 5-5 in the conference…Bears are 5-4, Cowboys 5-5, Redskins 6-4…the Vikings have a great shot if they win out…

“They would only get in if all those teams lost, which won’t happen.” – it is the NFL – anything can happen (Tampa lost to the Eagles at home yesterday)

  60. lambeaurules says: Dec 10, 2012 9:02 AM

  61. whatjusthapped says: Dec 10, 2012 9:25 AM

I love all the comments from the Viking fans all but assuring everybody that Peterson will reach that record. Its like talking about a no hitter to the pitcher in the 6th inning.

He is the best back in football and he is having a career year but there is one thing about today’s NFL, defenses soon or later catch up to what’s working and put a stop to it. RGIII is just the latest example.

In the end, the Vikings will not finish in last place (thanks to the futility of the Lions) and that is an improvement for a franchise that has never won a Superbowl. Lost 4 of them, but never won.

  62. RUAHORNH8R says: Dec 10, 2012 4:27 PM

There is NOT a fan of the game, that does NOT have a man crush on AP! He is a class act in every form & fashion! I wish him the best on his Goal, as a Die hard Vikings fan, it’s bittersweet! Realistically, for my pathetic franchise to ever contend again, the best move would be to trade him this offseason when his value has never been so high! As it pains me to think of him in another uniform, he would demand 2 , 1st rounders. Or a franchise QB, and a 1st. Ponder has shown Nothing thus far, although it is difficult to really evaluate him fairly since he has zero WR to throw to! Hey Speilman, were you sleeping when Danario Alexander got healthy? Rediculous to miss out on him!

  63. purpblooded says: Dec 11, 2012 6:33 PM

RUAHORNH8R you got that right! I’m wondering about the coach too, after the Mc Nabb debacle and our presant QB wows. He should’ve benched Ponder a couple times to salvage the games he was throwing away.

  64. pillowporkers says: Dec 12, 2012 10:44 AM

To all Vikings fans that say we should trade Adrian Peterson? What is wrong with you? This guy is more than just the best player at his respective position, something we won’t be able to get back for him no matter the price. But also, he’s a leader and role model in the locker room. In a game where momentum and determination means everything, are you going to be the guy in the huddle standing next to AP not giving 100%? I wouldn’t. Thirdly, why do you want to trade the only playmaker our offense has with Percy out? Why should we make our offense worse than it is, and trade the only fun person to watch right now? I want to see him retire a Viking, and I hope he gets us a Super Bowl.

  65. phloorioisanarcissist says: Dec 17, 2012 1:28 AM

    @teamnorsescore

With the Packers, what I mean by “large market”, is they have a large fanbase and generate a lot of revenue for the NFL via merchandise sales and such, and therefore receive a lot of attention. Teams like the Vikings have a small fanbase and thus are not as important to the media or the NFL. In the end its all about money. So if it makes any of you feel better that has a problem with that technicality, We’ll use the NY Jets instead? That work better for you?
