Panthers finally hang on for a win over Falcons

Carolina Panthers quarterback Cam Newton runs the ball against the Atlanta Falcons during the first half of their NFL football game in Charlotte Reuters

Much to the chagrin of the AFC Pro Bowl team, Cam Newton looked like a big deal Sunday.

The Panthers quarterback, who is still getting ripped for his personality, put on a show in a 30-20 win over the Falcons.

Newton finished with 287 yards passing and another 116 rushing, accounting for three touchdowns.

Over his last six games, Newton has accounted for 15 touchdowns and two turnovers, 11 touchdowns and no turnovers in his last four games.

The Panthers (4-9) went up 23-0 in the third quarter on an amazing 72-yard touchdown run by Newton, but being a Panthers-Falcons game, it was far from over.

The Falcons cut it to 23-13 (including a failed two-point conversion), but the Panthers iced it with a 53-yard catch-and-run by DeAngelo Williams.

The Panthers controlled the clock throughout the day, and even with a patchwork secondary (they were using their fourth and fifth safeties for most of the day), they were able to hand the Falcons just their second loss of the season.

You can’t keep Cam down for long. What a TD run that was.

Falclowns, tuck your tail between your legs and go back home down I-85s. One and done in the playoffs

This is why nobody believes in the Falcons, they should have been swept by the Panthers this year.

Atlanta will be one and done again.

That first half by the Panthers is how every game should go for them, it was a beauty to watch

    Second half not so much

I believe Newton can become a franchise QB and will lead his team to a Superbowl in a couple of years if the panthers use their picks well.

Imagine if the offense didn’t screw around the first half of the season and they let Cam run and ran screen passes and incorporated fat boy tolbert more?

Cam has looked really good in the FOUR games the Panthers have won this year… oh, wait, you say they have played 12 games?!? Must be a lot of Kryptonite in the NFL for “superman”.

I just can’t see the falcons making a strong playoff run though.

I saw this loss coming a mile away. Panthers owed us one and definitely deserved the win from the start. Cam finally got us, he’s untouchable at times. Congrats Carolina. (Roddy caught that ball)

Cam really made his case for that offseason of finding a new team today…. and look at the last four weeks! He will be a hot item this offseason!

Guess that Panthers player who said that the Panthers were a better team than the Falcons was right.
