49ers-Seahawks moves into NBC prime time Week 16

San Francisco 49ers vs Seattle Seahawks AP

The NFL has shuffled the Week 16 schedule to move a better game into the Sunday Night Football prime time slot.

The December 23 49ers-Seahawks NFC West battle that was originally scheduled for a 4:25 p.m. Eastern kickoff on FOX has now become an 8:20 p.m. kickoff on NBC. That means San Francisco will play on Sunday nights in back-to-back weeks, with the 49ers taking on the Patriots on Sunday night in Week 15.

The Chargers-Jets game that had initially been scheduled for NBC prime time has now been moved to a 1 p.m. kickoff on CBS. The league also moved the Week 16 Giants-Ravens game from a 1 p.m. kickoff to a 4:25 p.m. kickoff.

Flexible scheduling is used late in the season to put the best games in the time slots when the most people will be able to watch. The final schedule for Week 17 will be announced at the conclusion of Week 16.

Well, it is better than Seahawks and Rams in week 17 of 2010.

  2. wend28 says: Dec 10, 2012 1:25 PM

If for some reason the Niners win back to back SNF games on the road against the Patriots and Seahawks, you might as well pencil them into playing at the Superdome in February. That’s a tough duty right there.

  3. thebluu says: Dec 10, 2012 1:27 PM

Although 49ers Seahawks should be a really good game. I think Bengals at Steelers is a better match as both teams will have to win in order to get into the playoff.

I guess NBC didn’t want to pass up on the two young QB duel

  4. supremekingz says: Dec 10, 2012 1:27 PM

Great news for the Niners! Two primetime games in a row!

  5. scouter2012 says: Dec 10, 2012 1:27 PM

It should be a great game and it won’t be easy for the niners.

  6. remyje says: Dec 10, 2012 1:29 PM

don’t forget the jets vs titans next monday night.. you could just cancel the game all together, nobody would notice

  7. kane337 says: Dec 10, 2012 1:30 PM

    I hope the Seahawks win.

  8. kappy32 says: Dec 10, 2012 1:33 PM

This was something someone with half a brain could see coming for weeks. Who wants to watch the Jets v. Chargers in primetime when playoff races are in full speed. The NFL couldn’t go wrong with either Seahawks v. 49ers or Giants v. Ravens. What this does, however, is that it gives the Jets an advantage in probably their toughest game of the season. The Chargers will be playing at 10 am their time being the game is on the east coast. Jets fans can’t bitch that everyone in the NFL is against them anymore. I don’t think they’ll be in contention by that game, I think they lose to the Titans, but if they are, they have no one to blame but themselves if they lose that game. The deck is stacked in their favor & a cakewalk schedule just got a lot easier for them.

  9. trippymane says: Dec 10, 2012 1:33 PM

Wooo whooo!! Seahawks!! We got this!!

  10. ironmike778 says: Dec 10, 2012 1:34 PM

Damn. I was really looking forward to that Jets-Chargers game.

  11. skinsrock says: Dec 10, 2012 1:36 PM

    Thank you?

  12. seabronco says: Dec 10, 2012 1:37 PM

@thebluu the 49ers Seahawks game is for the division and the playoffs. It is obviously the better game.

  13. chrismatthewsucks says: Dec 10, 2012 1:38 PM

As a Chargers Fan, I think the hawks are one fo the most exciting teams to watch this year, they should be able to whoop on the niners.

  14. ccjcsr says: Dec 10, 2012 1:39 PM

    Niners 21-17

  15. threedeep1998 says: Dec 10, 2012 1:40 PM

Jets need to be taken off prime time. Outside of tonight’s game most AFC games are just boring

  16. terraj35 says: Dec 10, 2012 1:43 PM

Wooooow. A New York team being flexed OUT of a prime time game. That has to be a first.

  17. azarkhan says: Dec 10, 2012 1:43 PM

Excellent! They should also have an ambulance near the field because there will some heavy hitting in that game.

  18. themagicman1223 says: Dec 10, 2012 1:44 PM

Glad to see more people will witness the talent of Russell Wilson.

  19. armorgan67 says: Dec 10, 2012 1:45 PM

I know Fox Sports isn’t happy about this. Losing a marquee matchup to NBC gotta sting.

  20. steeeve718 says: Dec 10, 2012 1:48 PM

Hopefully the Seahawks and Patriots take care of business next week so this game is actually a battle for the division crown.

  21. seahawksbmx says: Dec 10, 2012 1:51 PM

If the Seahawks can beat the Bills next weekend (in a dome in Toronto) and the ‘Niners lose AT New England, this will likely be for the NFCW Crown. If things play out like I hope they do, this could be huge.

  22. chrisknowsdbr says: Dec 10, 2012 1:53 PM

And you also need to change that jets titans game to broncos at ravens

  23. ketch20too says: Dec 10, 2012 1:53 PM

Fans with tickets to the games are now left scrambling to rearrange their schedules and some likely will now have to miss the game. But, it really isn’t about the fans, it’s about the Neilson numbers.

That said, as a Hawk fan, glad to see this.Should be a good game. Wilson and this O are MUCH better than the first meeting.

  24. chattanola says: Dec 10, 2012 1:56 PM

This is good news for Sunday Night Football fans everywhere. Chargers/Jets? Who cares.

  25. a1giant says: Dec 10, 2012 1:59 PM

to save money for next season they should just not even film chargers games ,,, not even for replay

  26. oaktown49er says: Dec 10, 2012 2:01 PM

I’m a 49er fan in Brazil (6 hours ahead of pacific time) This will be another late night. But at least I can watch it on TV. Looking forward to some good games against good teams.

  27. willbow5253 says: Dec 10, 2012 2:01 PM

Awesome! I believe these are the toughest two games on the Niners’ schedule all year. I also know this Niner team brings it in night games (4-0 this year) and nationally televised games (6-0 this year. Of course that may not mean much against these two opponents on the road. Bart Scott and I can’t wait!

  28. brutalron says: Dec 10, 2012 2:02 PM

The Steelers/ Bengals game and the Giant sRavens game were protected by CBS and Fox respectively.

This was the best game that was left.

  29. peoplesrepublic0fdabayarea says: Dec 10, 2012 2:04 PM

Glad to see more people will witness the talent of Colin Kaepernick.

  30. tokyosandblaster says: Dec 10, 2012 2:06 PM

Well, a 9 won team vs a 7 win team is better than the jest.

  31. avr29 says: Dec 10, 2012 2:07 PM

For those who wanted to see Ravens-Giants, or Cincinnati-Pittsburgh, Mike Sando has noted that Fox and CBS protected those games, respectively, from being flexed.

It should be a great prime time though. Two potential playoff teams in what could be a division title game. GO HAWKS!

  32. mungman69 says: Dec 10, 2012 2:07 PM

Jets, Titans looks like a great game.

  33. mezter says: Dec 10, 2012 2:09 PM

Everyone is just hating on the Niners? Lol. Wow. I guess people like to pretend like they aren’t an elite team that can play with anyone. They beat the Seahawks earlier this year, and will be chomping at the bits to beat them again at home. Keep sleeping on the Niners and watch them win the Superbowl this year. Harbaugh has taken a risk with Colin this year, and I know it is going to pay off in the end. One game at a time. Go Niners!!!

  34. mezter says: Dec 10, 2012 2:11 PM

As a Niner fan, I hope the Niners just beat the Patriots and the Seahawks and silence the haters.

  35. fnc111 says: Dec 10, 2012 2:12 PM

    thebluu,

Thank god you aren’t a TV exec at NBC. This is an awesome matchup to watch. Pittsburgh and Cinci already played on SNF this season and it was a boring game . Stop being a homer. SF/Seattle will get huge ratings.

  36. sixjak says: Dec 10, 2012 2:15 PM

Aldon Smith likes the lights and puts up monster numbers in prime time games.

  37. trollhammer20 says: Dec 10, 2012 2:15 PM

Something tells me December 23rd in Seattle ain’t gonna be no “Silent Night”.

  38. steeeve718 says: Dec 10, 2012 2:15 PM

Here’s hoping for a good clean fight so the rest of the country can get over Tategate or Goldengate or Refgate or whatever clever moniker you savvy media types have given that play to get more page views.

  39. blabidibla says: Dec 10, 2012 2:18 PM

Kaepernick is going to be exposed (again) as the inexperienced QB he is in both of these upcoming games.

  40. radrntn says: Dec 10, 2012 2:22 PM

should be a good game…..nfc worse (west) has improved… rams, and hawks are on the uprise, but niners are pretty dialed in for the next couple of years.

  41. scoops1 says: Dec 10, 2012 2:27 PM

Someone at fox needs to move the packers vs bears game or the giants vs falcons game To 4pm on sunday. Can’t have both being played at 1pm

  42. osiris33 says: Dec 10, 2012 2:29 PM

The Seahawks will win, and it won’t even be very close. 27-13.

  43. mb925 says: Dec 10, 2012 2:35 PM

Ironic that this game may end up only having significance as far as the division title due to the results of the Green Bay at Seattle Hail Mary touchdown earlier this year…

  44. jetropolitans says: Dec 10, 2012 2:36 PM

Flexible Scheduling: Goodell’s most PC way of letting a team know how bad they really are.

  45. joshmattox says: Dec 10, 2012 2:37 PM

Hopefully the Packers/Vikings or Redskins/Cowboys game gets moved to the 8:30pm slot on week 17. With all four teams fighting for the NFC playoff spots it’s going to be a wild night.
The rivalries will be a huge bump in ratings in my opinion.

  46. sullijo1 says: Dec 10, 2012 2:37 PM

Does Peter King still think the Chiefs will win the AFC West??

Century Link field holds around 72,000 fans. If you are going, that leaves 71,999 that will be extremely ecstatic that the game has been flexed!
Prime time games are for some people, a once in a life time experience that can lead to the players really bringing their A game.

    Should be a great game!

  48. sactown9er916 says: Dec 10, 2012 2:45 PM

This will be a great game. Better than the first matchup. The Niners play awesome in night games and Seattle is lookin like a playoff team. Of course I’d love to go up there and silence that crowd. Tough task tho. Niner fans, I’m curious, which game do you like better, Pats or Hawks? Im sayin Hawks cuz it’s a division matchup

  50. eastcoastninerfan says: Dec 10, 2012 3:07 PM

    @sactown9er916

I believe these next two weeks will be VERY difficult…both the Pats and Hawks are playing at a very high level and these will be tough road games to say the least.

Both games will be great and will come down to who executes and who doesn’t.

  51. killitandeatit says: Dec 10, 2012 3:14 PM

You learn something every day. I had no idea that schedules for prime time were moved around. This is great news and another example of why the NFL rules.

  52. icanspeel says: Dec 10, 2012 3:19 PM

But Chargers vs Jets would be a great game if you love seeing 2 mistake prone teams duke it out.

  53. theysone says: Dec 10, 2012 3:20 PM

As a niners fan, with Kaepernick behind center, I can very easily see the team dropping the next two games and losing the NFC West title.

  54. vernonwillis says: Dec 10, 2012 3:22 PM

Time to burry the seachickens and the clown Caroll. Harbaugh got you in the corner Caroll!!!!!!!!!!!! I’m seeing #99 breaking all time sack record that night!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  55. southpaw79 says: Dec 10, 2012 3:32 PM

Now that this move has been official, the Seahawks will proceed to lose to the Bills on the road ( they lost to the Dolphins 8 days ago ) and the Niners will beat the Patriots (play well on the road against pass heavy teams like Packers and Saints). So by the time this game comes around the division will be locked up. I guess the Seahawks will still be playing for a wild card slot and the Niners will be playing for #2 in the division.

  56. southpaw79 says: Dec 10, 2012 3:42 PM

Check that, the Seahawks losing to the Dolphins was 2 weeks ago.

  57. bestcoast7 says: Dec 10, 2012 3:44 PM

everyone is doubting SF….just like last year :)

  58. peoplesrepublic0fdabayarea says: Dec 10, 2012 3:52 PM

    Bay Area > Seattle
    Apple > Microsoft
    49ers > Seahawks

    Bay = original
    Seattle = poor imitation

  59. stairwayto7 says: Dec 10, 2012 3:54 PM

To Whiners and seachicken fans, the onyl reason you got that slot was the steelers-cincy game and ravens-giants game was protected by CBS nad FOX! That means you were the 3rd option and not the best choice!

  60. source7769 says: Dec 10, 2012 3:57 PM

cbs protected the bengals steelers game , week 17 is the only week they cant keep a game away from nbc

  61. source7769 says: Dec 10, 2012 3:58 PM

  62. uschawk says: Dec 10, 2012 3:58 PM

Actually 8 days ago the Seahawks were beating the Bears on the road.

  63. lynchmobb12 says: Dec 10, 2012 4:01 PM

Sweet! Maybe if we beat sf in prime time, Seattle will finally get a smudge of respect heading into the post season.

Lynchhas this knack to where he activates beast mode to the fullest under brighter lights! Add the fact russellmania is playing lights out and the west maybe up for grabs this time, it’s a great opportunity for the hawks! Sea!

  64. onbucky96 says: Dec 10, 2012 4:05 PM

Good. Keep my Packers @noon. The only game that should be primetime is the Superbowl. Sick of late nite football…

  65. omegalh says: Dec 10, 2012 4:29 PM

Jets still have a punchers chance to make the playoffs (as quick as that would end). So its not a complete waste of a game.

Don’t hate just because ESPN doesn’t shut up about the Jets. Its not like they want the attention…err.

  66. ninerhatersgetready4ring6 says: Dec 10, 2012 4:32 PM

This should be a great game but how soon people forget for a game to be a rivalry the other team must win a few times. The Niners have beaten the SeaHawks 4 in a row dating back to 2010 and boast a 4-1 record the past 5 games. That one loss was in the Singletary era when Singletary thanked Pete Carroll for whopping their butt. Don’t think Harbaugh is cut from that cloth.
Be careful before you crown the Hawks division champs because the Niners play their best when it counts. Niners win this one in a close one 20-16……

  67. namaths5thofwhiskey says: Dec 10, 2012 4:38 PM

As a Jet fan I thank the NFL for this change. Nobody needs to be forced to watch a Jet game.

  68. hooterdawg says: Dec 10, 2012 4:46 PM

“Well, it is better than Seahawks and Rams in week 17 of 2010.”

That was a critical 2010 game as it was for the NFC West division title. In fact, the Rams-Seahawks are again playing in Week 17, and it also could be for the division title: the Hawks have to sweep their remaining 3 games whereas the 9ers only have to go 1-2. The 9ers can lose to the Pats and the Hawks, but still win the title by beating the woeful Cardinals in Week 17 at home. If the 9ers go 0-2, and the Hawks go 2-0 in the next two weeks, the West will be decided by spoilers Cards and Rams.

Seahawks were rebuilding in 2010-2011, had the most transactions of any team in NFL and we still had competitive 1 score games vs 49ers versus expect for one beat down we took as well. How soon San Fran fans forget 2002-2010 – Seahawks used 49ers as a punching bag but we still considered it a rivalry because the mutual dislike. I don’t mind Cardinal or Ram fans but that’s about it. Lynch in prime time with a much improved Wilson at Century Link. It’s going to be a game game.

  71. kingcrusher says: Dec 10, 2012 6:33 PM

    Ok,

Thumbs up if you think Seahawks win this one,

Thumbs down if you think 9ers win.

  72. bigredtuna says: Dec 10, 2012 7:00 PM

Jets-Chargers was a dog. I think Smith has it wrong about flex scheduling. It is not to ensure that there is a great game on Sunday night; it is to ensure that there won’t be an awful game on Sunday night.
