Jim Harbaugh refuses to discuss Brandon Jacobs

Brandon Jacobs, Jim Harbaugh AP

As 49ers running back Brandon Jacobs continues to vent his frustrations about his lack of playing time, coach Jim Harbaugh is refusing to discuss the matter.

Reporters repeatedly asked Harbaugh about Jacobs at his press conference today, and Harbaugh repeatedly refused to say anything.

“I don’t . . . I really don’t have a comment for you on that at this point,” Harbaugh said when asked about Jacobs. “No comment.”

Asked if he has spoken to Jacobs, Harbaugh answered, “No comment.”

Asked if Jacobs is still a member of the team, Harbaugh answered, “I’ll go with the Fifth Amendment. I have no comment on that.”

Asked if he knew that Jacobs had a tendency to complain about playing time, Harbaugh answered, “Yeah, at this time, at this hour, I choose to have no comment.”

Jacobs is buried on the 49ers’ depth chart and has played in only two games this season, gaining seven yards on five carries. Harbaugh doesn’t seem interested in playing Jacobs. Or talking about him.

Why did we sign this overrated slow dumptruck?? Cut him now, if he is not guaranteed money, and add some worthy player from the practice squad.

  2. nyjets1017 says: Dec 10, 2012 4:02 PM

Does Jacobs ever stop running his mouth? I’d say he would be a perfect jet but not even they talk that much

  3. illinininer says: Dec 10, 2012 4:03 PM

    Good.

  4. davidpcoelho says: Dec 10, 2012 4:05 PM

If he ran like he runs his mouth he would be playing more.

Look at his workload the past 6 seasons and i’d say there is no way in hell he’d sign in hindsight knowing he’d only have 5 carries on the year.

  6. ihatelogicalvoicesays says: Dec 10, 2012 4:06 PM

As a giants fan id welcome him back is a legit shortyardage redzone threat

  7. rcali says: Dec 10, 2012 4:10 PM

    “Next Question!”

  8. jakec4 says: Dec 10, 2012 4:12 PM

It doesn’t make a lot of sense though that the 49ers aren’t just ramming it in with Jacobs down at the goal. Brother John has the same doghouse for players he doesn’t seemingly like on a personal level.

Jacobs should just shut up though because his number could be called any time to go into the game.

  9. richiesaurus310 says: Dec 10, 2012 4:16 PM

We should cut him, but we wont so he doesnt end up on a team we end up playing in the playoffs this season. Smart move imo.

  10. worldchampsbaby says: Dec 10, 2012 4:18 PM

The guy has a big mouth, but has helped give my team 2 world championships.Cut him please. We’ll take him back.

  11. nygiantstones says: Dec 10, 2012 4:20 PM

Glad he’s off our team. Enjoy him, SF. Guy never should have been a RB, should have been converted to a DE or TE a long time ago. Just can’t get low enough as a RB. He was good when the Giants were amazing back around the time Plaxico shot himself. Played 16 games only twice in his career. Another excellent decision by Ross to let this loud mouth go by the wayside.

  12. 2difshoe says: Dec 10, 2012 4:20 PM

Harbaugh and that attitude will trickle down to the players and the 49’s will never win a Superbowl.

Harbaugh needs to fine tune his coaching mentality. If you were a player, would you really want to play for him ?

  13. wferg1121 says: Dec 10, 2012 4:20 PM

Two things, I don’t blame Jacobs, he has a short NFL career and wants to make the most of it. Despite being signed, they have not even given him the opportunity to show what he brings to the table.
The second thing is I will be surprised if they cut him, everyone knows that the Giants just signed 2 running backs, and Bradshaw is having an MRI on his knee.. I think the 49ers know that as soon he is cut, no one will pick him up except people that they could play. The last thing they want to do is face a motivated Jacobs in the playoffs.

Jacobs wants the 49ers to cut him, I think he will go running back to the Giants, and the Giants would gladly take him over the guys they have now, since he knows the playbook.

  14. boyshole25 says: Dec 10, 2012 4:20 PM

Guy hasn’t been a red zone threat in three years

  15. supremekingz says: Dec 10, 2012 4:21 PM

I never understood this signing. With Anthony Dixon, we have a power back. And unlike Jacobs, he plays special teams. When we kept both of them, I became confused. How can we have Gore, and Kendall plus the fullback Miller, rookie speedster and high draft pick LaMichael James, plus dirty work Dixon, and then sign Jacobs?

I want to call Jacobs a crybaby, but i understand his concerns somewhat. He’s a 30 year old running back. If he’s not given a chance to put something on film for other teams, his career is done and he’ll likely never get a payday like he got in the NFL again.

I think it would be in the 49ers and Jacobs best interest if they just part ways now. Just like what the Jets agreed to with Drew Stanton.

  16. rhinosteel6 says: Dec 10, 2012 4:23 PM

As a Steeler Fan, I wouldnt mind having him on our team. Brings an Attitude when he runs the ball.

  17. nzyme says: Dec 10, 2012 4:24 PM

Sound like they cared more about keeping him off the Giants if you ask me….

  19. dbones750 says: Dec 10, 2012 4:27 PM

Goodnight, sweet Prince. Your NYG career was a fun ride. Thanks for the memories. It seems your decision to bolt to SF was a poor one and your NFL future is uncertain at best. I hope it works out and you catch on somewhere they will let you play.

    Dumb signing by 9ers.

  20. FinFan68 says: Dec 10, 2012 4:27 PM

He will be cut in the playoffs. Either if the 49ers lose or if they win the NFCC game. He will not be on the SB roster if they get there.

  21. bigbluecrew420 says: Dec 10, 2012 4:27 PM

I bet u SF fans wish u had this “dump truck” in the NFC championship game last year!!!

  22. trollhammer20 says: Dec 10, 2012 4:29 PM

Jacobs’ career is now a horror movie. It’s called “The Shunning”.

  23. bigbluefan11 says: Dec 10, 2012 4:29 PM

He’s a great running back but only when he runs angry. Maybe that’s Harbaugh’s plan. Get him plenty riled up then unleash him in the playoffs.

  24. torturedraiderfan says: Dec 10, 2012 4:30 PM

Why did SF sign him if they aren’t going to use him? Didn’t they know how much he complained with the Giants?

  25. davikes says: Dec 10, 2012 4:33 PM

    Either:

A)It must be a really slow news day in SF if they’re asking the coach about a 4th string RB.

B)There are too many reporters, so the bad ones worry about gossip and drama more than the game itself.

    C)All of the above

  26. atrophiedambitions says: Dec 10, 2012 4:34 PM

Gore is old. He’s done a great job of staying healthy but I think they’re just saving Jacobs for the playoffs. Fresh legs, etc. Harbaugh would rather the NFL just forget he existed until then. But if he got 20 carries in a divisional round game or something, it would be a change of pace, scheme, and gameplan DC’s may not have a great plan to deal with.

  27. rajbais says: Dec 10, 2012 4:34 PM

    Then cut him!!!

He worked to get in shape all this time to do good for your team and you won’t let him play??

As the cliche goes “put him out of his misery!!!”

  28. thestrategyexpert says: Dec 10, 2012 4:40 PM

Is it common practice Mr. Harbaugh to not talk at all with certain players on your team? I understand if you don’t want to comment on the nature of conversations, but you are saying no comment to even speaking with the man.

So in other words we are to assume it is definitely possible that you will on occasion consider cutting off communication with certain players on your team presumably because it’s more valuable to you to not have to talk with certain players than to continue trying to work with them in some way during trying or challenging times?

  29. vcstriker16 says: Dec 10, 2012 4:42 PM

There’s a general misconception amongst fans who may have not have been following this story throughout the season about why exactly Jacobs has not played much.

Brandon Jacobs has been since Day One as a 49er the third or fourth string RB on the team. Assuredly , Frank Gore and Kendall Hunter are 1 and 2 (and I would assume he knew that when he signed). Generally in the NFL a team’s third string RB tends to play special teams as well, therefore justifying his spot on the game day roster. But Brandon Jacobs DOES NOT play special teams. That is why Anthony Dixon would get the nod ahead of him.

Frank Gore is not Ahmad Bradshaw. He can gain first downs on 3rd and short situations as well as run in goal line touchdowns. Hunter getting hurt presented Jacobs a golden opportunity to get on the field and he is apparently too depressed to take advantage of it.

  34. goldrush36 says: Dec 10, 2012 5:05 PM

If his legs worked a 1/10 as much as his jaws do he would be all pro. Cut the baggage

  35. pixelito says: Dec 10, 2012 5:07 PM

Harbaugh would never cut Jacobs because he knows he’d end running over his defense again in the playoffs as a NY Giant.

    he got 2 superbowl victories.

only “non” players like yourself would have a problem with harbaugh’s coaching. he is amongst the most winning coaches in the history of the nfl. everybody in the nfl would play for him. the exceptions are bad apples. why don’t you ask why was BJ let go by the giants?

  38. snikerbotloot says: Dec 10, 2012 5:11 PM

  39. scotty9678 says: Dec 10, 2012 5:12 PM

Now word is he’s SUSPENDED for the last 3 games.

As a Giants fan, that’s a bummer. A fresh BJ is a good thing at this time of year.

  40. trybe29dr says: Dec 10, 2012 5:17 PM

Just suspended Jacobs the rest of the season…addition by subtraction

  41. crownontherocks8 says: Dec 10, 2012 5:22 PM

^ was just going to post that

49ers suspended RB Brandon Jacobs for the final three games of the regular season.
Updating a previous item, Jacobs was not waived. 49ers coach Jim Harbaugh isn’t letting him off that easy. Jacobs had complained about his role in recent weeks, and he had no value to the Niners other than depth behind Frank Gore, new change-of-pace back LaMichael James, and short-yardage option Anthony Dixon. Rather than waive Jacobs and let him go to a fellow NFC playoff contender like the Giants, the 49ers are stashing him on the reserve/suspended list.

  43. manningbowl88 says: Dec 10, 2012 5:40 PM

did anyone see what wilson did for us against the saints.. jacobs should of been off the giants 2 years ago the only thing hes good for is energizing the team with his yelling..his best skills are suited for running thru players and short yardage but he tries to sidestep knowing damn well he cant be like the a.ps of the world so he tricked himself into being terrible.. we dnt need him back in NY

  44. mjzaky says: Dec 10, 2012 5:50 PM

@VCStriker , what do you know about Ahmad Bradshaw? He does run in TDs from the red zone and he converts 3rd and shorts even more frequently than that. You’re right that Frank Gore isn’t Ahmad Bradshaw– Bradshaw has two rings.

  47. giants56 says: Dec 10, 2012 6:24 PM

Signing Jacobs and Manningham was an attempt to make the Giants weaker..Just like Belicheck signing an injured Jake Ballard…If you can’t beat them, make them a part of your team….

  48. nananatman says: Dec 10, 2012 6:27 PM

Giants might not need him, Bradshaw is showing solid right now, Wilson looks pretty dynamic even dropped some solid blitz blocking Sunday, just signed two guys two weeks ago who are experienced. Arizona, Buffalo, St L behind Jackson, Min behind AP, Green Bay there are loads of teams that could use back strength.

  49. orivar says: Dec 10, 2012 6:44 PM

I like Jacobs personality, the man speaks honestly. Here’s a simple concept, don’t ask him questions and he’ll have nothing to talk about. Ask him questions and well, you’re going to get an entire paragraph.

  50. ngbradley says: Dec 10, 2012 6:53 PM

Why oh why did we sign an older, slower version of Anthony ‘Boobie’ Dixon?

He plays special teams, is the most popular guy in the locker room, and will go to war for this team.

    —————————————————-
I respect Bradshaw and I knew a Giants fan would get angry when I read the first comment but honestly Bradshaw is not Gore. This season alone Gore has more yards, more yards per carry, more TD’s, more 1st downs….Bradshaw, he has more fumbles. Gore has 6 career 1000 yard seasons, Bradshaw 2 (I’m giving him this year) Based on your logic, Trent Dilfer (1 ring) is greater than Dan Marino (0 rings). The Giants team has been better than the Niners team recently for sure. I would not trade Gore for Bradshaw at any point in his career so far. Gore on the Giants for the last 8 years would not even be fair.

  52. chi01town says: Dec 10, 2012 7:54 PM

Harbaugh will get exactly what he deserve in the first playoff game they play. the 49ers will lose and the media will bring up every thing he done this season. Bullying the replacement refs.. turning his back on Smith and the fact that Smith will refuse to play for them next year. and now this.. suspending Brandon instead of just benching him.
