Rather than cut him, 49ers suspend Brandon Jacobs

Brandon Jacobs, Eli Manning AP

The 49ers clearly weren’t thrilled with runing back Brandon Jacobs‘ griping, as was evidenced by the fact coach Jim Harbaugh wouldn’t talk about him earlier today.

But rather than cut him, the team has suspended him for the final three games of the regular season, according to Matt Maiocco of CSNBayArea.com.

Had the 49ers released him, which Jacobs would certainly have preferred, he would have possibly ended up with a team the 49ers have to beat at some point in the next month. This way, they simply put him in the cooler, keeping a player they weren’t using anyway from becoming (more of) a distraction.

its what they get, they knew his story when they signed him!

  2. stevedurbano says: Dec 10, 2012 5:15 PM

If they had cut him they might as well paid for his plane ticket to Seattle.

  3. lumjack32 says: Dec 10, 2012 5:16 PM

Do they need a reason to suspend (not pay) him? Why don’t the Eagles ‘suspend” Vick?

  4. smcgaels1997 says: Dec 10, 2012 5:18 PM

That’s how they roll..want to act up? Here ya go

  5. realfann says: Dec 10, 2012 5:20 PM

It’s cheaper this way. Cut him and they’re on the hook for his salary.

This way it costs them nothing.

Godspeed, Tip Toe Burglar. May you take wimpy, tentative steps out of San Francisco.

  7. kane337 says: Dec 10, 2012 5:20 PM

I think the NFLPA will be investigating this one.

  8. dadeyemi says: Dec 10, 2012 5:20 PM

What has Vick done to warrant suspension? Lol

  9. Mr. Wright 212 says: Dec 10, 2012 5:20 PM

They know he would be right back in East Rutherford if they did cut him. Cowards.

  10. tennis22drew says: Dec 10, 2012 5:21 PM

Lamichael James performance this week probably gave them the confidence that he could be the #2 back

  11. giantboy99 says: Dec 10, 2012 5:23 PM

Obviously, didn’t learn a thing while in NY

  12. dmackdaddy says: Dec 10, 2012 5:24 PM

As a 49ers fan I’m sad that he couldn’t keep his trap shut. We havent needed him all season and probably wont. Now he got what he was looking for. Makes for a good example of what NOT to do.

  13. goldrush36 says: Dec 10, 2012 5:26 PM

I would actually like to thank Brandon though. He got Dixon who has twice the speed to get re-focused on getting himself running north south again.

Yes, Jacobs was suspended for conduct detrimental to the team. You can’t suspend someone solely for being a turnover machine (Vick).

  15. goldrush36 says: Dec 10, 2012 5:28 PM

James very first carry contributed more than Jacobs all year. Dixon’s carry too for that matter. Pretty easy decision actually

  16. macklinr61 says: Dec 10, 2012 5:29 PM

It makes sense to avoid him getting picked up by an adversary. However, can he be suspended for three games for saying he hates not playing? NFLPA might come a knocking at 4949 Centennial in a few hours.

  17. oaktown49er says: Dec 10, 2012 5:29 PM

Not gonna let him take the inside info to another team, smart move. Michael Robinson went to the Seahawks before the opener a few years back and it was bad news for the 49ers.

  18. giants56 says: Dec 10, 2012 5:30 PM

    Harbaugh is a kitty cat!

  19. rudy5618 says: Dec 10, 2012 5:30 PM

Brandon Jacobs is a big mouth, underachieving, egomaniac. Is it just me or is the perfect fit for him the JETS?

Clearly a runing back isn’t what the niners had in mind when they signed Jacobs to be a running back

  21. Sarcasm says: Dec 10, 2012 5:33 PM

Harbaugh is a bit of a baby.

  22. ferrell5 says: Dec 10, 2012 5:36 PM

does this surprise anyone? jacobs is nothing more than a loudmouth wannabe who could never play a season worth remembering. never seen a big back dance as much as this joke

  23. peoplesrepublic0fdabayarea says: Dec 10, 2012 5:43 PM

    Also, suspend Alex Smith.

  24. benh999 says: Dec 10, 2012 5:43 PM

No way they get away with suspending him without pay. The Eagles barely got away with suspending TO with pay under similar circumstances.

I am curious what they will do with him if there is a deep play-off run. I think the old CBA limited the number of games a player could be suspended by the team to four.

  25. kattykathy says: Dec 10, 2012 5:43 PM

Harbaugh is an insecure man. Obnoxious and pompous.
Jacobs gets suspended just for complaining about playing time???? That’s not right, the union will rightfully attack this and win.

  26. PhantomsToenail says: Dec 10, 2012 5:44 PM

Softest Rb in the league, bar none

  27. tombstone7 says: Dec 10, 2012 5:47 PM

LMJ is the real deal…..need to get him touches and in open space! Keep in mind, he was a Heisman trophy #2 candidate and the Doak Walker recipient last year!

  28. southpaw79 says: Dec 10, 2012 5:48 PM

The Niners buried Dixon on the depth chart this offseason adding Jacobs, LMJ, and Cartwright. What did Dixon do? He shut his mouth and worked his *ss off. Now he is dancing in the endzone after scoring a goal line TD that would have been for Jacobs. Way to go Jacobs. All mouth then gets knocked south.

Sounds like Death Race ’13 will be relocated.

  30. chi01town says: Dec 10, 2012 5:59 PM

Harbaugh is full of him self out there playing god in frisco. but all these crazy moves with his players are going to come back and slap him in his face. hes NOT going to get away with turning his back on his starting QB and Smith is the best QB on that team.

  31. eatitfanboy says: Dec 10, 2012 6:02 PM

Whelp- I’ve read the article 10 times now and don’t see where it says he was suspended without pay.

Where did everyone get that? They absolutely cannot suspend him without pay. He will be paid to stay away from the team just like Keyshawn Johnson was by John Gruden back in the day.

Glad I could clear that up.

  32. infectorman says: Dec 10, 2012 6:02 PM

after running his mouth about another players wife last year (so professional), I wouldn’t have DREAMED his mouth would get him in trouble again…

  34. sonoco says: Dec 10, 2012 6:06 PM

    @kattykathy-

Maybe he should have waited for him to sucker punch somebody in practice?

  35. roadtrip3500 says: Dec 10, 2012 6:07 PM

While the Giants were an obvious potential destination with Brown on IR and Bradshaw banged up, remember… Jacobs wouldn’t redo his contract to help the team with cap room. Selfish then, selfish now. The Giants could have re-signed Plax too, and they chose not to. Jerry Reese and Tom Coughlin seem to be the kinds of guys who won’t let you cross them twice.

  36. Mr. Wright 212 says: Dec 10, 2012 6:09 PM

They only signed him to get info on the Giants. Didn’t work. 26-3. We’ll beat them again.

  37. cool10857 says: Dec 10, 2012 6:15 PM

Just goes to prove that Brandon Jacobs is the only person who thinks he is a better football player than he really is. Don’t let the door hit you in the ass on your way out. Some players never learn what it means to be great. The Giants were smart to let him go. I bet he wishes that he never left NY.

  38. timbuttrum says: Dec 10, 2012 6:16 PM

Good for you Harbaugh. He’s been a cancer to his team for his entire career. Don’t give him the satisfaction of signing with another team this year. Now he has something to gripe about when he is sitting at home for the rest of the year.

Yeah that and tweeting he hated his boss, hanging out in the Giants locker room for an hour after their game, oh and being a big team distraction. Yeah I’m not so confident the union will win. This is legitimate conduct detrimental so get over your sad hate for Harbaugh and face reality. The most that happens is Jacobs still gets paid but has to stay away..

  45. christopher525 says: Dec 10, 2012 7:19 PM

IF they make the Super Bowl, I’d cut him the week of the game. Pretty sure neither Houston nor New England want, or need, him.

Karma for what? The 6th (yes I said 6th because Miller is better too) best back on the team can’t face reality and goes running his mouth all year? You can bet if he is saying these things on social media he is saying this or worse in the locker room. There is no karma here. The only karma will be Jacobs trying to find a good gig after 2 teams in a row decided to cut him because of his big mouth. How did Braylon do this year? That is with Braylon being a better asset to a team

For signing him only to get info on the Giants. Didn’t work. They had no intent to play him.
