Shanahan sounds optimistic RG3 will play vs. Browns on Sunday

AP

Redskins quarterback Robert Griffin III feels good today and appears ready to play against the Browns on Sunday.

Coach Mike Shanahan said today that when he saw the hit Griffin took on Sunday he was nervous, but after talking to Dr. James Andrews, who examined Griffin, he’s optimistic.

“We felt very good with the news,” Shanahan said of Dr. Andrews’ examination. “When I looked at it on film I thought it would be worse than it was.”

Shanahan described the injury as a lateral collateral ligament sprain.

“Robert has a mild sprain of the LCL — it’s Grade 1,” he said. “He’s had some mild swelling. He had his right knee repaired, his ACL, in 2009, and that looks great. No problem there. We’ll evaluate it day by day, see how it is on Wednesday, but talking to him today he felt pretty good.”

With this news coming a day after Griffin took a hit that could have been very bad, the Redskins have to feel very good.

  1. It would be nice to see this kid play for 10-15 years.

He needs to stop exposing himself to big time hits though, or its not going to happen.

  2. Basically God is an RGIII’s corner and this remarkable season will not end for him or the Redskins via a fluke injury. The lord wants Griffin to win Rookie of the year and the Redskins to win the NFC East, conference and Superbowl. So it has been written, so it will be done.

  3. If anyone thinks he really will suit up this Sunday then I have a bridge to sell you. Classic make the browns prepare for two different style quarterbacks. I understand the move but get ready for the blowhard grasping skins fans to jump all over this.

The guy removed himself from the game yesterday bc in his words he “could no longer move” yet in 7 days he will be able to play QB at the highest level and run away from nfl players? Get real.

  4. Can someone tell me if James Andrews is a lot of teams doctors or just the Redskins. I heard hes the team doctor, but at the same time I’ve heard he’s done a lot of big time players’ surgeries.

    Anyone know?

  5. Was Dr. Andrews the old guy in the fedora and plaid full length coat looking a little like Bear Bryant on the sideline?

I hope RGIII can learn from this like he did the concussion he got vs Atlanta.

Sure glad Shanny picked Cousins up in the draft.

  6. Eventually the nfl will catch up with his offense. Hopefully by then Kyle will have an offense built around a pocket passer. Otherwise he will have the life of a running back. 5-6 years tops

  7. Only a matter of time before Griffin suffers a career threatening injury.
Let’s see. Year one throughh 13 games he’s had a concussion and a sprained knee while running. QB can’t run consistently in the NFL. We’ve seen this time and time again. If Griffin wants to play at a high level he’ll need to run less.

  8. Go ahead and tee off on this comment but “the Browns are going to win that game”. The D is playing very very well (minus the brain lock Jamaal Charles play) and the O will do just enough against a shaky Redskins D.

  9. If he plays it will mark the beginning of the end of his career. Shananhan is foolish to put him on the field.

  10. Andrews is not the “Redskins team doctor”, but rather a world-renowned orthopedic surgeon specializing in knee, elbow and shoulder injuries.

  11. And so continues the story of another “mobile” NFL QB that will have his career cut short or limited by injury. This is why mobile QBs never make it in the NFL…this isn’t college, the beating NFL players take is only meant for 300 pound men to endure over the length of a 10 year career. Even RBs rarely see that length of career with the beatings they take. QBs? Forget about it.

  12. If I’m not mistaken, he got injured on a sack. It’s not like he was sprinting in the open field and had the opportunity to slide to avoid a hit. Actually, since that concussion, he’s done a really good job of avoiding hits. The only time I’ve seen him take a hit is when he’s close to the first down marker and is trying to fight for it (there were two or three such instances against the Ravens).

That said, quarterbacks of this ilk are tough to manage because a big part of what makes them so special is also going to put them at risk of injury.

  13. While I’m glad it’s only a sprain, it’s still a KNEE. Kirk Cousins looked competent (and hungry to prove himself) and so I think it would be entirely possible that he could start against the Browns on Sunday.

Depends on who is taking first team snaps this week. We’ll see.

  14. Browns fan here. I want RG3 in.

I want it to be said, up or down, whether Holmgren made the right call or not on RG3.

And nothing will speak to it like a head to head match up on the field.

  15. All qbs get hit and this offense is a way to bridge the gap they will start to shy away from the option reads as he progresses nd becomes more comfortable as a pro he’s not just a runner he’s one of the most accurate passers in the league

  16. I do not understand these Resdkins fans.
Your team is 1 game above .500.
You are from the outside of the playoff race looking in.This is the 1st year you have been somewhat relevant but yet for some reason its about “god” being on your side and how you are “going to win the NFC East”. Please tell me what position “god” plays on the field and give me his stats. Worry about getting into the wildcard spot before you “win” the NFC east.

In Reality, your Qb does not know how to run an legit NFL offense. The pistol is a bridge from a college spread/option offense to a real NFL behind center offense. He is fragile and he will be the next Michael Vick if he keeps it up. Yes Robert Griffin III has made alot of progress, but at the end of the day he has not accomplished anything and once defenses have a full year of film on him he will become slightly above average.

  17. I would bet he doesn’t play. Skins may try to steal one with the back up and hold him out for final two games.

Will be interesting to see how they handle him this week end. One of his greatest assets is his ability to put pressure on the defense with his legs.

  18. RG3 is a warrior. Watching him come back in the game after taking that hit and play until he couldn’t walk anymore. With the playoffs on the line.. Not gonna be surprised when #10 is out there this Sunday

  19. Where’s the skins homer that went bananas last week when someone mentioned that Griffin is prone to contact. The dude couldn’t accept that his style of play leads to a more likeliness of getting injured. I don’t ever remember Brees/Brady/Manning flying through the air to reach the markers on designed runs.

  20. As a Giants fan, I sincerely hope RGIII is able to finish out the season. That guy, as Jim Harbaugh would say, is a Football Player and he is the biggest reason that the Redskins have done an about face this season. It would be a shame that he wouldn’t have an opportunity to see the season through and compete for a much deserved, in the MVP talk (at least), playoff spot.

  21. The funny thing is RGIII was sliding when he was hit yesterday. Just a fluke thing where Ngata hit RGIII’s leg as he was going down and torqued his knee.

  22. Grade 1 LCL it is recommended to stay off of the knee for two weeks…..full recovery in 3 weeks to 3 months.

Remember, the report says ‘no significant’ damage….not no damage at all.

This is still a pretty nasty injury to just about the one joint on a body a football player has to have in near perfect condition for top performance.

With NFL type treatments this week there is a remote chance he could possibly play ……but would be severely limited in his movements and probably in a good amount of pain and discomfort.

The bigger issue would be one of two things…further injuring the knee …..or more importantly, being so limited in movement he becomes a standing target for even more vicious hits.

Is Shanahan willing to expose him to that ?

You do realize that Holmgren was in talks with the Rams at the same time the Rams were in talks with Shanahan, but Shanahan offered more… He then took Trent Richardson. While I like him, Alfred Morris was a 6th round pick and has rushed for nearly 400 more yards and averages a yard and a half more per carry. Holmgren will be fired at the end of the year, all anyone needs to do is look at his record in Cleveland to know he is no VP/GM.

As for the idiots who keep saying Griffin is going to get hurt if he keeps running, there is some truth to it. But you guys discount the fact that if he stayed in the pocket and tried to throw it he would get beaten worse than using his speed in open space to avoid the rush. That offensive line is built for the run game, they can’t protect a QB in the pocket. If he would learn to go out of bounds or slide when there is no way of gaining any more yardage he wouldn’t have been injured against the Falcons or the Ravens yesterday.

He’s a rookie and will learn from these mistakes. Just like Luck will learn not to throw an interception for every TD he throws.

  24. “He needs to stop exposing himself to big time hits though, or its not going to happen.”

I think he’s actually been very good about protecting himself since he suffered the concussion earlier this season. The Ngata hit was sort of a blind-side fluke. Really though, the worst hits he takes anymore are in the pocket right after he lets go of the ball (I can think of one where Ware tattooed him). I think he’ll play a long time in the league cause unlike a player like Vick, RG3 understands that being a playmaker and scrambling are not the same thing. And that curtailing exposure to hits is not mutually exclusive with playing aggressively.

  25. He should sit against the Browns. Isnt this the exact scenario Shanahan used for justifying the drafting of Cousins?

RG3 is dinged. Let him sit or risk getting him hurt even worse!

  26. skins fans, get used to rg3 missing games every year, that option will get him killed, and he not effective in any other type of offense other than that, so yr limited with continued mediocrity!! fail!!!

  27. @watchfullhose

According to Andrew’s bio on his website:

“In the professional sports arena, Doctor Andrews is Senior Consultant for the Washington Redskins Professional Football team”

So yeah when it comes to joints and joint injuries, Dr. James Andrews is the Redskins team doctor.

  28. The coaching staff isn’t going to give out any indication if RG3 will play. Why would you? Make Cleveland have to prepare for both QBs.

That being said, the Browns aren’t a bad team on defense. They got some guys that can fly around and make plays. Outside the Giants game they have played everyone tough. The Skins could probably still one without RG3 but it will be a challenage for them.

He had ZERO designed runs yesterday. All his runs were scrambles. It’s football. Guys get hurt everywhere. Brady, Palmer etc. blew out their knees in the pocket. Just as dangerous back there. In the open field, at least you can see most things coming.

BTW, this “mobile QB” is #1 in the NFL in QB rating 13 games into his career. Keep thinking he’s not a pocket passer.

Trust me, unless there are setbacks this week, he’s going to play.

dont fall for the banana in the tail pipe, rg3 wont play for the rest of the year!!!

Please come back this weekend when you see him throwing TDs.

It must kill you that he’s the #1 rated QB in the league and is beating SB contenders while Luck is at the bottom of the league statwise even though he’s facing the easiest schedule in the NFL.

  31. Robert Griffin is an amazing talent. What makes him hard to defend is his read/run offense. He has great pass efficency because of the multidimensional threat. If he is stationary it remains to be seen if he has as high a QB rating or Pass %.

I hope he continues to develop. What a talent.

Don’t be stupid,Shanahan! Sit him this week and keep him as a player for 15 years!!

  32. skins23

keep dreaming buddy, but im happy for u skins fans, u finally have something to cheer for this late in the year since Reagan was in office, truely sad!!

  33. u skins fans are like that poor kid in school who finally got an expensive gift for the holidays and are annoying everybody else by bragging on it, but everyone else has always had that nice gift for years, be humble and dont count yr chickens b4 they hatch, rg3 wont bring a
    SB to DC, never!!!

  34. Dr James Andrews is a world renowned surgeon who is a huge redskins fan and the team specialist. He flys to whatever city the redskins play at on Sunday, but lives and has a practice in alabama, where he is also the team specialist for the crimson tide. That was Andrews on the sideline attending to griffin

  35. Robert Griffin III is now Robert Griffin II. One more big hit way from being Robert Griffin I.

I think Robert Griffin III has the best arm in the NFL. He has a quick, buggy whip motion that makes the ball come out of his hand with the spin-rate of a compressed 9 iron. Skins don’t need the wildcat to win; Robert Griffin III could win in the run-and-shoot offense that Warren Moon use to run. Or any other offense they choose to put him in.

  36. be humble skins fans, cause rg3 isnt all that, and u guys are just making a mockery of yourselves when u guys fail AGAIN, word to the wise, BROTHER!!!!

    _______________

No, he was injured sprinting down the field, although to his credit, it was 2nd and 19 with a man defense, the perfect down for a quarterback draw, and he was trying to slide/get out of bounds when he was hit. Additionally, you are entirely correct that, since the Atlanta game, he has been doing a stellar job sliding, stepping out, and avoiding big hits. Even on the hit yesterday, he did manage to get airborne at the last second, which almost certainly saved him from serious knee damage. Point is, while no one wants Griffin to get hurt, he’s a smart kid and understands how to keep himself healthy, how important his health is to his team, and will certainly be doing an even better job protecting himself in the future, despite his risky playing style.

  38. Rg3andout don’t feel bad for anyone bud, you are the kid who tells the old jokes at the cafeteria table only to be shunned back to the dork table when all you wanted was to be cool once, just once

  39. “Put some ice on it, Bobby, you’re playing Sunday.”
And even if he couldn’t, Kirk Cousins is capable of becoming an absolutely outstanding qb…

  40. The guy is going to have learn how to protect himself. His playing style invites too many punishing and dangerous hits. If he doesn’t learn to protect himself he’ll be a constant injury machine.

  41. quick, name me a QB that ran the option offense and won a SB? ………………….ill wait…….

  42. skins fans should file a grivance against the Rams for pulling that heist on them, rg3 isnt worth 3 1st and a 2nd, are u kidding me? like Pneck18 said, name me a QB that ran the option and won a SB, i couldnt name him one either, and it wont happen, this isnt college,rg3 will get exposed like tebow n Cam did

Right on the money with Cousins. He will get most of the snaps in practice. Should he be called on, hopefully he would do better then he did against Atlanta.

Secondly for all you guys touting the Browns as the next great thing, time out, they have improved and I do like them and it is a shame the coach is deadman walking but come on, they have a three game winning streak against the Charlie Batch lead Steelers, Oakland and KC. Should be a good game but one the Skins should be favored to win.

  44. Peytonsneck and rg3andout
You two idiots never cease to amaze me. At the beginning of the year, RG3 would be terrible and not worthy of starting. Then it was ‘he still has a losing record’. Now it is ‘no qb has won a SB running the option’.
No. 1 – Skins don’t run the option. It’s called the ‘Pistol’. You should learn about it because only the Steelers have been able to slow it down (and 10 drops were the main reason)
No. 2 – Quick, name me a QB before Montana that won using the west coast offense. Quick, name a dual threat qb that won before Elway and Young. Quick, name a primarily throwing offense that won before the Rams and Pats. The NFL changes. 30 years ago nobody threw more than they ran, now almost everyone does.
Quit hating. RG3 is playing extremely well. Skins are just one back of the division. How are the Colts in their division? I personally can’t wait for the Texans to humiliate the Colts this week. Please learn something, ANYTHING about football before you speak.

  45. 3 first round picks and a 2nd for one player is a lot of eggs to put in one basket. Especially when that basket likes to run out of the pocket. How many current NFL players would you pay that ransom for? I can’t fault Holmgren for not matching that deal since anything less than an HOF career would be a disappointment.

  46. Luck is in the playoffs with a team that won 2 games last year, and rg3 cant make it with a 2 time wining SB coach and a team that won double as many games as the colts did last year, rg3 is all hype, but Luck is and will always be the better QB, rg3 is inpsector gadget QB

  47. Browns fan here.

I find this very interesting. I was against the Browns using 3 or more first round draft picks for RGIII. No player is worth 3 first round picks, as the risk to too great. That being said, shanahan is taking a huge risk putting his QB on the field this Sunday. If he’s slowed by his injury and kept in the pocket, the Browns DL will play the ‘meet you at the QB’ game all day. The Browns are currently 7th in the league with 34 sacks, and the DL is playing well. If RGIII isn’t mobile, it might be a very long day for skins fans.

  48. Skins fans, always remember, Haters are going to hate, period. If we weren’t a relevant team, we wouldn’t even be acknowledged. And remember Proverbs 26:4. “When arguing with fools, don’t answer their foolish arguments, or you will become as foolish as they are.”
