Jaguars defensive coordinator Mel Tucker played his college football at Wisconsin for coach Barry Alvarez, who is now the school’s athletic director and is trying to find a new coach after Bret Bielema left for Arkansas. But Tucker says you can stop connecting those dots right there.
“Well, there’s not an interest on my part at this time,” Tucker said of the Wisconsin job, via our friends at College Football Talk. “So that’s kind of where it is right now.”
Tucker said he has talked to Alvarez about it, although he didn’t offer any details. Tucker’s qualifications for the job include five seasons as an NFL defensive coordinator and assistant coaching stints at Ohio State, Michigan State and LSU.
We hate parsing coaches’ words at this time of year, but it is interesting that Tucker mentioned he’s not interested “at this time.” With the Jaguars at 2-11 and Tucker and the rest of the staff in danger of ending up unemployed after the season, it’s entirely possible that three weeks from now, Tucker will be interested.
