Carl Johnson is stepping down as head of officiating

CarlJohnson

Via text message received moments ago from NBC officiating consultant Jim Daopoulos comes word that NFL V.P. of officiating Carl Johnson is stepping down, and that he’ll return to being a game official.

Adam Schefter of ESPN has also reported the news, explaining that Johnson will leave the position after the Super Bowl. Per Schefter, Johnson will be one of the first full-time game officials.

Johnson is in his third season on the job. Schefter reports that a leading candidate to replace Johnson will be NFL director of instant replay Dean Blandino.
