Aldon Smith says Niners can stop Pats

Aldon Smith AP

The game of the weekend, assuming the road team shows up (unlike the Texans on Monday night), will be in Foxboro, where the 9-3-1 49ers will face the 10-3 Patriots.

Have we mentioned the game is on NBC?

San Francisco linebacker Aldon Smith believes that road team will indeed show up.

We can stop them,” Smith said, via the Santa Rosa Press-Democrat.

One thing that could help the Niners stop the Pats is the fact that, when Smith faced Patriots left tackle Nate Solder in college, Solder couldn’t stop Smith.

“I had a good game,” Smith said, pointing out that he had four sacks for Missouri against Solder’s Colorado Buffaloes.  “I faced him in college and I know who he is.”

The official box score at the official Missouri athletics website shows that Smith actually had three sacks.  Maybe Smith will get four on Sunday night.

If he does, he’ll break the single-season record by one full sack, with two full games to go.

As a Niners fan, they will need all the breaks to win. Brady is playing lights out, they found a running game. We rely too much on our defense. The Pats are the best team in the league right now imo. It should be a good game..Go Niners!

  2. detroitsports1234 says: Dec 13, 2012 7:26 PM

That’s the same thing the Texans were thinking on MNF

  3. jtchernak says: Dec 13, 2012 7:26 PM

Should be a good one but I’m not sure why our defense (patriots) is not being mentioned at all! Last week we held the texans to 7 points when all starters were in for them and us. Our defense is good and it’s improving behind wilfork

  4. anotheryx says: Dec 13, 2012 7:27 PM

This will be a lot closer than Pats Texans (which DVOA never gave Texans much of a chance). Pats seems to have a tiny edge but this game could go anywhere between 17-14 to 49-42, either way.

  5. bh83 says: Dec 13, 2012 7:30 PM

Every defensive player in the NFL thinks they can stop any other team. You don’t make it to the NFL without thinking that.

  6. andrejohnsonforpresident says: Dec 13, 2012 7:31 PM

Other than several god awful penalty calls on the texans and one or two blown coverage plays the pats game against the Texans wasn’t as bad as the score says it was. I hope Aldon smith finishes off what JJ started. Hopefully he breaks the sack record against the pats. Remember Aldon, lead with your helmet.

  7. dstep24 says: Dec 13, 2012 7:32 PM

‘Niners will get romped in this one. Can’t put away the Rams at home…can’t put away the Pats on the road.

  8. coacheskid says: Dec 13, 2012 7:32 PM

There is no scenario on earth in wchich the niners can score 35 points, let alone 42

  11. histarz says: Dec 13, 2012 7:36 PM

A lot of bad memories for Solder, and it looks like the nightmares comin back. Of course, I don’t think the Pats would be crazy enough to leave Solder by himself, but that’s where the other Smith comes in and cleans up. Lose-lose situation for the Pats QB.

    I don’t think so, Tim.

The Patriots can protect their QB, the Patriots can run the football, the Patriots defense is peaking at the right time, the Patriots have the #1 ranked offense in football and Tom Brady doesn’t lose at home.

    Good Night Sweet Niners

Should be a great game between two great teams.

  15. southpaw79 says: Dec 13, 2012 7:45 PM

No, no. Keep talking about how the Patriots are unstoppable and can not be defeated at home in December. No need to give ammo to the best team in the league.

  17. nje22 says: Dec 13, 2012 7:49 PM

As Pats fan 9ers bother me a lot more than Houston
SF assaults you viciously, Aldon and Justin Smith are tailor made to run through Solder, who I can’t stand. He is a straight ahead run blocker who has horrible pass protection feet (watch the monster cheat step he takes with his left leg on passing downs) and gets trampled a few times a game. Don’t doubt smith tore him up, so here hoping the ghost of John Hannah somehow shows up.

  18. coughlinsredcheeks says: Dec 13, 2012 7:53 PM

Well you’d HOPE they would have that mentality. I couldn’t imagine rooting for a team whose players say “We don’t think we can beat them. We just plan on taking the field and hope everyone has a good time”

Yep. But the ‘Niners lost to the Rams a lot more recently than the Pats lost to the ‘Cards. If it makes you feel better, keep telling yourself this is the same Pats team that it was when Arizona beat them.

The rest of the league will take notice that it isn’t, and understand that they can’t march a significantly limited offense into NE and think they’re going to win a shootout.

What we do know, is that this is the same SF team that lost to the Rams.

Unfortunately for the ‘Niners, if SEA wins in Buffalo this weekend (actually, in Toronto), then the ‘Niners face SEA in SEA for what will be a game for the division lead.

And here ‘Niners fans thought they had the NFCW in the bag 2 weeks ago.

  22. legeisyaj says: Dec 13, 2012 7:57 PM

    Classic matchup.

If I were a SF fan my biggest concern wouldn’t be if the Smiths show up, it wouldn’t be the play of the excellent SF D, it WOULD be young Colin K collapsing under the pressure of the pats D mixed with the pressure of having put up 30+ points further confounded by the ever-changing Belichick schemes. I hope for SF fans he finds that awesome TE Vernon early and often.

A tough challenge for sure. Pats by 8. If I were a gambling man…

    —-

Yes they did. To add to that didn’t the 49ers win at Green Bay and New Orleans? Granted, the Saints stink but most people were picking them to beat the 49ers as they’d won 5 of their last 6 at the time and a home win vs. SF would have bumped them above .500. If I remember correctly, both of those team have pretty decent QB’s also.

  25. smcgaels1997 says: Dec 13, 2012 8:03 PM

And SF losing to the Rams equals to the Pats losing to Arizona at home

  26. nesuperfan says: Dec 13, 2012 8:05 PM

It won’t be Solder vs. Smith. It will be Solder and a tight end vs. Smith. That is how Belichick usually handles a great pass rusher.
@andrejohnsonforpresident Despite what Gruden said about that PI call being bad since it was “uncatchable”, anyone, who watches the NFL knows that they only call a pass “uncatchable” if it is out-of-bounds, or at least 10 yards away. They never call that unless it is BEYOND obvious. The ball was in the same T.V. screen as the players when it dropped to the ground. It is still hard to say that if the WR had not been hit, and slowed almost to a complete stop, whether he could have caught it. It was not so much a bad call as bad commentary by Gruden. That argument about the calls needs to be put to bed for that reason..oh, and they lost by 28 points. That was NOT because of the officiating.

  29. Patskrieg dot com says: Dec 13, 2012 8:10 PM

They certainly can but here’s where I have to contradict Mr. Smith:

Like a lot of people I thought Solder was overrated in college. He is worlds better now than he was as a senior at Colorado. The 2012 Nate Solder can compete against 2012 Aldon Smith.

    Should be a great battle.

  30. thereisfootballwestofjersey says: Dec 13, 2012 8:12 PM

Niners will sit in nickel and dime all night frustrating Brady. They can do it better than anyone with the speed of Willis and Bowman. Brady will get his passing yards but punching it in down in the red zone is tough against the Niners. They don’t give up a lot of touchdowns.

Harbaugh and Roman will also get Kaepernick out of the pocket this week after he took 4 sacks last week.

If Talib is able to go – they will throw at his man coverage all night. You have to. Can’t believe Houston didn’t exploit that.

yeah, he is a first round pick, a top 10 pick, but name a pass rusher taken in the top 10 in the last 20 years you would want over what Aldon Smith is doing… I don’t think I need to list all the top 10 busts/underachievers for you to realize where I’m going with it.

  53. sanfranfanyouknowit says: Dec 13, 2012 9:54 PM

Smith is a beast and should break the sack record this year without having Favre flop for him like Strahan did. Also the niners have slowed down every good and bad offense they played this year, so they won’t have to put up 40 points to win. I’m pretty sure 28 will be enough to pull this one out.

  54. jvibottomline says: Dec 13, 2012 10:05 PM

Hate to burst Patriot fans bubble, but look at the Rosters, Niners dominate talent here and will dominate this game, only physical teams up front can compete against Niners

  55. themackstrong says: Dec 13, 2012 10:27 PM

49ers don’t blitz like the Texans but don’t lead the NFL either. They have 32 sacks and Texans lead it with 37. 49ers far better pass coverage team because of it which is why this Monday Night game is going to be close. Pats should come out on top because Pats D at home versus QB who is still playing like a rookie.

  56. redrew says: Dec 13, 2012 10:40 PM

  57. dsigrey says: Dec 13, 2012 10:42 PM

He’ll get his sack, Brady will get the win. He gets rid of the ball way too fast, that combined with the running game and play action will prove to be too much for SF. 31-17

  58. mnomalley says: Dec 13, 2012 11:04 PM

San fran looses to teams that play like them (vikings, giants, rams) and beat teams that are stereotypical teams that pass and have no running game. Should be an interesting game

  59. patsfiend says: Dec 13, 2012 11:19 PM

This is muck-raking. I head the whole interview, and he sounded contrite, logical, like a good guy. He sounded like a Patriot interview, actually.

The Niners are WAY more physical than Houston, and moreso than any team the Pats have faced this year outside of Baltimore or maybe Seattle. It’s gonna be a hum-dinger!

Of course the Niners could stop the Pats… they have a great D and running game. Add a QB who doesn’t turn it over (put Smith in?) and they have as good a chance as anyone.

  60. fasteddy415 says: Dec 13, 2012 11:24 PM

Lets not get it twisted. The Niners 9-3-1 record is a mirage. We talking about a dominant 11-2 team that punches you in the mouth if 2011 Ackers showed up in 2012!

Thinking blow out is foolish? Terrible weather with expected snow storms. And don’t think for a minute CK7 cant play in frigid weather. The kid was breaking records in Reno Nevada. Its gonna be a close game.

  63. norcalmafia says: Dec 14, 2012 12:09 AM

The Niners seem to always play well against the top qbs in the league..They always seem to beat the high scoring offensive teams..Teams that beat the Niners are the ones who are built like the Niners..You have to be able to run the ball on them which few teams can and hit them in the intermediate passing game..The Pats are a great team but thay dont match up well against the Niners..Niners 28 Pats 21…..

  64. sportsguybayarea says: Dec 14, 2012 12:56 AM

Everyone keeps doubting the niners. They did it last year when they faced the saint in the playoffs. They didn’t give the niners a chance. Saints were suppose to destroy them. Bree’s was having a historic season from the qb position as well as the saints offense as a whole. One of the best offensive seasons in NFL history. If I’m not mistaken Bree’s was on a roll before the niners game. He had a streak going of games without throwing an interception. I’m not saying the niners are gonna win because the patriots are probably the best team in the NFL but c’mon guys, they’re facing the best defense in the NFL. Should be a very good/close game. Defensively not a blow out by the patriots

I hate both teams so its a win-win, especially if Pats pummel them…its a lesson in humility for saying you can stop them – Boy, are they setting themselves up. On the other hand, i’m a big fan of defense, and the Niners blow up people – nothing gives me greater thrills then seeing a team that frequently runs up the score getting smashed all over the field.

This game will be a classic, or a let down (esp. if Kapernick has turnovers….)

Note to Aldon Smith… do you really want that white hot spotlight on national TV… Calling out Solder is just plain stupid… and everytime a player runs off at the mouth before a big game almost always gets them rammed down their throat.

The 9ers have absolutely NO chance @ winning this game! They have a great Defense, and will be able to “duke” it out with similar competition. The Pats are in a class of themselves. As a Viking Fan, I wish our leadership would try to emulate the Patriot system.
Brady is , IMO the best QB to ever play, you just cannot beat him with a great D and an average offense.
    Pats 38
    Niners- 17

and this is why we play the game. but ill say one thing. the niners defense has exceptional skill at every level. The line, the linebackers and the secondary. the niners are a rough vicious team that will hit you in the mouth on both offense and defense. This should be a great game. May the best team win.
