Browns might cut Trent Richardson’s playing time

The Browns are riding a three-game winning streak into Sunday’s game against the Redskins, but rookie running back Trent Richardson hasn’t been performing quite as well as his team.

Richardson is averaging 3.5 yards per carry in those three games and has failed to crack three yards per carry in two of the games. That production led to questions for offensive coordinator Brad Childress about whether he might elevate Montario Hardesty to the top spot on the depth chart. Childress said that wasn’t on the table, but he did suggest that Richardson could be in line for a little less playing time in the final weeks of the season.

“Are we going to give him a series every now and then, or every third series or something to that nature?” Childress said, via the Canton Repository. “Yeah, we talk about that.”

Richardson had two knee surgeries before the season and he’s been bothered by injured ribs for several weeks, which could indicate why he’s been less effective than the Browns might have hoped. He’s got 869 yards on the season, good for 14th in the NFL. Seven of the 13 players ahead of him have fewer carries, however, and Ahmad Bradshaw, who also has 869 yards, has carried the ball 51 fewer times than Richardson.

Even so, the Browns didn’t trade up to draft him third overall to bench him in favor of Hardesty. Richardson clearly needs to do more, but he’ll get more than 13 games to prove he’s capable of doing it.

The Redskins linebackers are gonna feast on Richardson. 6th rounder Alfred Morris is a real RB, in fact best RB in professional football. Richardson will rush for less than 50 yds. Morris will rush for 160+ and score 3 TDs. Redskins win 42-13.

I’d sort of expect them to limit his touches down the stretch given they’ve been eliminated. Better to give him 15 touches a game than burn him out or expose him with 30, especially when Hardesty has looked pretty solid this year.

I bet the Browns would love to have that pick back….

Alfred Morris is the best RB in Professional football? please enlighten me on how he even compares to AP or even a guy like Lesean McCoy? Alfred isnt even worthy of holding ALL DAYS jockstrap

    @localvoicesays
You really dont pay attention to football. Morris is not the best RB IN FOOTBALL..Have you heard of ADRIAN PETERSON? Yea the RB that plays for the Vikings, who is on pace to break Eric Dickerson’s rushing record. Thats the best RB in football. Your voice is talking garbage.

Don’t write him off yet, guys – Richardson will get healthy and rip off some yards yet. He’s running hurt, and will heal up.

Good idea. Kid hasn’t been healthy since he was drafted.

It’s pretty easy to be a running back when defenses have to stay home for your QB on the option. Cripe. AP played with that guy he’d break the record with ease.

@Dracula – I think you might need to go back and re-read (or maybe just read) the article. R.I.F. – Reading is fundamental.

Wow – I can’t believe these comments. People don’t even read the headline and think T-rich is getting cut? C’mon. The guy hasn’t been healthy at all yet is pretty effective. We had 4…yes 4 rushing TDs last year – last week Trich had 2 (8-9 on the yr).

For those stroking the Alfred Morris ego, it’s all because of Shanahan’s zone blocking scheme.

Living in DC, it’s been a fun week listening to all these hogs talk about crushing the Browns even without RG3.

Can’t wait til Sunday for this game…

I think that may have been a joke

Skins have been doing the misdirection all week about RG3/Cousins and the Browns are likely just returning the favor. While Childress gave the quote inspiring this piece…and it was noncommittal, Heckert said today that the staff is not concerned about Trent’s performance so far this year.
    We shall see on Sunday.

BTW…I lived in DC most of my life so I’m expecting a great game with one of my two favorite teams winning.

Let’s not forget Foster, Lynch, Forte, and the list goes on. Morris is lucky to crack the top ten of best RBs in the league. More likely? He’ll be out of football within 3 years, like 90% of RBs drafted late (or even early, for that matter).

You folks’ problem is that some of you take logicalvoicesays seriously, instead of for entertainment value.I don’t think that even HE takes everything he says seriously, and I’m a ‘Skins’ fan.

I’ve watched a few Browns games and I am very impressed with Richardson. Exception for Joe Thomas that offensive line is below average and there are not enough targets for Weeden who is a rookie remember. Also, when you watch Richardson run he does great after contact and has tendency to carry piles. I don’t think Cleveland has anything to worry about.
