Chris Kluwe draws ire of special teams coach for “distractions”

Whether it’s his vocal support of same-sex marriage or his campaign to get punter Ray Guy in the Hall of Fame, Minnesota Vikings punter Chris Kluwe isn’t bashful about speaking his mind.

It appears as though Kluwe’s antics have finally drawn the criticism of at least one of his coaches.

According to Brian Murphy of the St. Paul Pioneer Press, Vikings special teams coach Mike Priefer is getting tired of Kluwe’s “distractions.”

The latest “distraction” was Kluwe putting a “Vote Ray Guy” note over the 50th Anniversary Hall of Fame patch teams wore last weekend. Kluwe was fined $5,250 for the display.

“Those distractions are getting old for me, to be quite honest with you,” Priefer said. “Do I think Ray Guy deserves to be in the Hall of Fame? Absolutely. But there’s other ways of going about it, in my opinion.”

While the Vikings publicly supported Kluwe’s campaign for same-sex marriage rights, to Priefer the routine has worn thin.

“To me it’s getting old. He’s got to focus on punting and holding,” Priefer said.

He was then asked if that was something he has told Kluwe specifically.

“Nah,” Priefer said. “He don’t listen.”

As Kluwe is known to do, he took to Twitter, presumably, to address his coach’s comments and bring some levity to the situation.

“I want you all to know that I just meditated for 5 hours in the lotus position, solely contemplating football. I feel spiritually cleansed,” Kluwe tweeted. “Unfortunately I now appear to be stuck and cannot move my legs. I might be downgraded to questionable for the game Sunday. Please send help.”

So Kluwe has a problem with taking direction and/or has insubordination problems, or is it just a legitimate learning disability or a hearing problem?

I wonder how the ST coach plans on getting him to concentrate on holding and punting while making insults to the media that get poured over the internet.

And I wonder if the ST coach realizes that Kluwe is a highly valuable Punter that teams like the Lions who struggle near the bottom in that department wish they could have. Good Punters are extremely rare and quite valuable, might want to think twice about trashing on them to the media.

Or maybe it’s not Kluwe with a listening problem, and a problem of the ST coach not paying attention to how people in the NFL can get into a lot of trouble by opening their mouths and saying things that are very stupid and harmful to a team that should be trying hard to focus on making the playoffs.

    Love kluwe.

…and further proof that Kluwe represents everything right with this league. He has an opinion, speaks it clearly and intelligently. With all the issues the NFL has, it would be nice if someone else had the gall to speak out for once.

Gotta love Chris Kluwe, bringing fun to the No Fun League…But when did they make him the head coach?

  5. dimiandmac1 says: Dec 14, 2012 2:06 AM

Kluwe shut your pie hole! Noone cares what you think, and I know people are going to write…obviously you do care if you read the article. To that I say…i read almost every article cause I love the nfl. Anyways to get to my point this ass clown speaks on a daily basis as if hes a superstar. Dude your a punter, shut up, kick the ball, and try to act as if someone ran into you…thats all you are good for!

Chris Kluwe is like the only NFL player that I’m glad has a twitter. That’s classic. Haha

While we all enjoy players who speak their minds and avoid the cliche-mill, Kluwe needs to remember one thing:

The biggest reason that he has a forum to present his many opinions is that he is an NFL punter. He might just want to keep that position if he wishes to enlighten the masses with his thoughtful commentary.

At least until his band signs a recording contract.

    That is all…….

As long as Kluwe is doing his job, (which he is) Coach Mike Priefer needs to zip it.

  9. dlc618 says: Dec 14, 2012 2:43 AM

    Cut him. Lol

  10. shaggytoodle says: Dec 14, 2012 2:47 AM

With T.O. and Ochocinco no longer around, the league needed a new “diva”.

I just think its awesome that it is a punter.

  11. boopipes says: Dec 14, 2012 2:58 AM

Lol, he’s right. Lighten up dude. He’s a kicker, basically impossible to be a distraction.

  12. skeetys says: Dec 14, 2012 4:25 AM

    Fire Priefer!

    Male model.

  14. TheWizard says: Dec 14, 2012 5:21 AM

That’s pretty funny, but I’m thinking Kluwe may not fully appreciate how much he is privileged to have that job.

  17. boknowsvt says: Dec 14, 2012 6:49 AM

This guy has the best sense of humor of anyone in the NFL.
“Focus on punting and holding”? Seriously?

  18. shadcan says: Dec 14, 2012 6:49 AM

Ahaha, this guy’s awesome. Love how he trolled his coach on twitter.

  19. stellarperformance says: Dec 14, 2012 7:01 AM

  20. georgiamadman says: Dec 14, 2012 7:14 AM

Kluwe and Gronk need to go on tour after the season ends!

  21. mute617 says: Dec 14, 2012 7:29 AM

I don’t like Kluwe for his distractions. That & he’s overrated as a punter.

  22. thefnlimit says: Dec 14, 2012 7:42 AM

    Grow up Kluwe.

  23. cardmagnet says: Dec 14, 2012 9:03 AM

Fans (even of other teams, like myself) love Chris Kluwe. The guy is entertaining. The Vikings really only have three guys that are appreciated on a mass level – Jared Allen, Adrian Peterson, and Chris Kluwe. Why would they want to dim their appeal to fans by not allowing Kluwe to be himself? He also seems to be doing the same job on the field regardless of his “distractions”, so it’s not like it’s interfering with his job.

  24. elyasm says: Dec 14, 2012 9:09 AM

I love Kluwe, he’s always hilarious expressing his opinion. As a punter, it isn’t like he needs to do a whole lot of preparation each week. The long snapper snaps the ball, he kicks it. That’s it, that’s his job. It doesn’t matter if they’re playing the ’85 Bears or the ’07 Lions, the plan is the same: catch the ball and kick it, preferably inside the 20. Being a holder for the place kicker is the same, catch the ball and put it down (laces out!). If it was your QB or MLB making these comments it might be a concern, but a punter can talk all he wants as long as he keeps kicking well.

If he loses the job in football, he may have a career in stand-up.

  26. packerhater says: Dec 14, 2012 9:48 AM

Do I think Ray Guy deserves to be in the Hall of Fame? Absolutely.

Why did he ask and answer his own question?

  27. eagles512 says: Dec 14, 2012 10:40 AM

I’m with the anti-Kluwe group. Enough already.

  28. seamhereseamthere says: Dec 14, 2012 11:05 AM

Those that can…do. Those that can’t….coach. Those that can’t coach……..coach special teams.

‘Focus’ on your next job Priefer. You and the whole staff will be looking for them when Frazier gets fired in 3 weeks.

  29. bigjdve says: Dec 14, 2012 12:04 PM

I like Kluwe’s comments. The best part is that he has an intelligent rationalization behind them.

He hear so many inarticulate, ignorant, and just plain stupid things come out of people’s mouths why bash people when they are intelligent, even if we disagree with them it is still something interesting.

By far one of the funniest quotes of the year. Thanks Chris for continuing to be yourself. Please don’t change.

The coach’s name is Mike Priefer. Brian Murphy was fired years ago. I can’t believe you got 16 thumbs up on that.
