Cousins to start for Redskins

AP

They kept the Browns guessing for as long as possible.

The Redskins have announced that Kirk Cousins will start at quarterback on Sunday.

The Redskins had been sending mixed signals all week regarding whether Cousins or Robert Griffin III would get the start.  Griffin suffered a Grade 1 LCL sprain to his right knee on a hit that looked like it created much more damage than that.

Griffin practiced all week on a limited basis, but Cousins took the first-team reps.  Multiple players have expressed confidence in Cousins, who finished the drive on which Griffin was injured, throwing a touchdown pass and running in a two-point conversion to force overtime against the Ravens.  The Redskins won the game via a long punt return that put Washington in field-goal range.

It’s unclear whether and to what extent the Browns spent time preparing for Cousins.  The Redskins surely hope the answer is “not much.”

UPDATE 9:32 p.m. ET:  While the text message from team P.R. said that Cousins “is starting,” the official entry on the team’s Twitter page is that Cousins “is expected” to start.  Expectations, like plans, can change.  In theory.

  1. Even if Cousins was announced the starter at the beginning of the week, what film would Cle study? Michigan State? lol

  2. wow…pretty tough talk from skins fans considering that they’re finally at best an average team that hasn’t been relevant in the NFL for ages. While I must admit, he’s fun to watch and defintely a game changer, I can’t help but think that his playing style will eventually get him seriously hurt.

  3. RG3 is doodoo. He’s gonna get hurt every season he plays. The way he runs is not conducive to long-term NFL success.

  4. Cousins has thrown a whopping 11 passes in 2 games. Yes he played well last Sunday, however, the Browns defense has played well against a lot of veteran QB’s this year. I think Redskin fans who think Cousins two appearances off the bench is a true indicator of his QB capabilities have fallen for fools gold. I saw him play at Michigan State. There’s a reason he was drafted where he was. Redskin fans are in for an eye opener tomorrow.

  5. if the redskins lose to the joke of the afc north the browns in the factory of sadness they do not deserve to make the playoffs

the browns have only had wins against the worst teams in the nfl and the steelers game doesn’t count bc it was their 3rd string qb and the steelers had 8 yes 8 turnovers and the pos browns barly beat them.

“Weapon-X” RG3 or “Capt America” Kirk Cousins starting THE REDSKINS WILL DESTROY THE BROWNS AND MAKE THE FACTORY OF SADNESS EVEN SADDER!!!!

THE BROWNS ARE THE WORST TEAM IN THE NFL THRUOUT HISTORY. NEVER WON THE SUPER BOWL AND NEVER WILL!!!!

    #HTTR #BEATCLEVELAND #BEATTHEBROWNS #FACTORYOFSADNESS
    #CAPT.AMERICA-KIRKCOUSINS

time for the whole team to step it up…..

fight like bloodthirsty warriors, play like champions, dominate the browns and win!!! HTTR

Capt America Kirk will make “Weapon X” RG3 proud!!! time to make the factory of sadness even sadder!!! HTTR

Capt Kirk is gonna show he is a much better rookie qb than lmao weeden

Ok. Like I said, if RGIII, we win by 28…With Cousins by 14. Either way, another easy victory for the Washington Redskins.

What a presumptuous turd. You may have to look that one up, logical. I don’t think you’re old enough to use big words like that yet.

  7. The Redskins handled this injury and reporting of it, like the insecure franchise that they are…. They should be embarrassed how they handled the reporting of it. (You may think they did it to keep the Browns guessing with their preparation, but much of it it to keep their fans from panicking). In their last two weeks, they are lucky to face the weakest (in the last decade) Eagles and Cowboy teams…..

  8. If cousins plays well, skins would be better off trading rgiii for twice what they paid. For as good as he is, he will miss way too many games over the years with his style of play.

  9. Me thinks a heck of alot of people are forgetting Kirk’s college days. If the Browns rattle him, I see many INT’s They better just hand off all day.

  10. I’d love to see Cousins go all Matt Flynn on the Browns and make himself a millionaire today, opening the door for the triumphant return of Sexy Rexy as the guy who bails out the ‘Skins every year when their running qb gets hurt!

  11. As a Eagles fan I think RGIII is being mishandled and his career will be cut short by nagging injuries. Take it from a Eagles fan mobile QB yes running QB no.

  12. @paredskinwarrior1985

Worst team in NFL throughout history? Obviously don’t know anything about the history of the NFL.

The Browns have won more NFL championships than the Skins have. Just because they weren’t called Super Bowls doesn’t mean they don’t count. They won the league championship their first year in the NFL and played in 10 consecutive championship games!!

Also have more HoFs than the Redskins including probably the greatest player to ever lace up cleats. Maybe you heard of him. He wore number 32.

  13. The NFL has several ex 2 string qb’s who were able to parlay big $ from teams looking for a starter.

    Cassell- KC
    Kolb- Arizona
    Flynn- Seattle

It just goes to show just how desperate teams can be. There is a reason why they were 2nd string. They aren’t that good.

  14. Coming from a fan of the team with the best rookie QB in the league (Seahawks!), everyone said the ‘Skins were crazy for picking up Cousins after taking RGIII with their first pick. Now they have an alternative to Rex Grossman with Griffin out, so it’s looking more and more like it was a good move. Of course, we’ll find out for sure after seeing Cousins play for a whole game…

He wins v. the Browns, and you got a QB controversy…

I don’t think Shanahan changed his last name to Harbaugh.

    A. Any competently coached team would have handled this situation the exact same way (why do you think the Patriots have more Probable and Questionable players on the injury report than any other team each week?)

    B. Saying that the Redskins won because these were the weakest Eagles and Cowboys teams in a decade is a stupid argument. Teams get better, teams get worse, that’s the nature of the NFL.

Your statement isn’t much different from saying “the Eagles, Cowboys and Giants have been lucky that over the last two decades, they’ve been facing the weakest Redskins teams of the past three decades.” or that the Patriots actually won the Super Bowl last year “because if they were just facing the 2003 New York Giants, it would have been a total blowout.”

I mean hell, why don’t we have the 2011 Redskins play the 1955 Browns and call today’s game a crushing loss for the Redskins before it even starts?

  17. I like RGIII, I think he is great, but you lamos who think Cousins is just decent are not giving him any credit. After he wins today I can already see it: Redskins win by 18, BUT with RGIII they would have won by 25! Lame.

hulkhogansays, stop making up new names.

And even though we all know you aren’t really a Washington fan, people do seem to be underestimating Cousins. This game would be close even if Griffin was playing at full health, but just because Cousins is starting doesn’t mean that it’s going to be a blowout win for the Browns.
