Falcons roll to huge win over Giants

Giants quarterback Manning is sacked by Falcons defensive end Bierman in the first half in Atlanta. Reuters

The Falcons won’t shut up their many doubters until they win a game in the playoffs, but they likely got a few more people believing they could pull that off with their performance against the Giants on Sunday.

Atlanta intercepted Eli Manning’s first pass, turned it into a Michael Turner touchdown and never looked back in a 34-0 rout of the team that humiliated them in a 24-2 playoff loss last season. The Falcons held the Giants scoreless in the first half thanks to another pick by Manning, a missed field goal and two stops on attempted fourth down conversions, but the second half had very little to do with the Giants.

The Falcons scored on their first possession of the third quarter when Julio Jones toasted Giants cornerback Jayron Hosley for a 40-yard touchdown, stuffed the Giants on another fourth down and then pretty much went into cruise control as the Giants seemed to be content to take their beating while turning their attention to next week’s game with the Ravens. If either the Redskins or Cowboys win on Sunday, the Giants are out of first place and the tight Wild Card race in the NFC will make that trip to Baltimore a very necessary win for the defending champs.

Getting it will require much more than they got from Eli Manning on Sunday. He was 13-of-25 for 161 yards to go with his two interceptions and it was another below average performance from a guy who’s been much less consistent than Tom Coughlin would like this season. There are plenty of other issues with the Giants — just one sack today and very little other pressure on Matt Ryan for starters — but they always counted on Manning to bail them out of trouble last year.

The Falcons won’t have any complaints about the way things went on Sunday. Ryan hit on his first eight passes and threw for three touchdowns and the defense didn’t give the Giants anything in the second half. They controlled the ball after halftime, dashing any comeback hopes, and made no mistakes that would have let the Giants back into the contest.

It was an impressive win, albeit one that has to be a prologue to bigger ones for the Falcons to get where they want to go this season.

Giants shutout our offense and left us for dead in their house last year… We just returned the favor.

  2. chc4 says: Dec 16, 2012 4:04 PM

Geez, that was a shellacking. And the Falcons took a knee inside the NYG 5 yd line to end the game.

  3. iceshocker says: Dec 16, 2012 4:04 PM

People keep acting as if beating the falcons in the georgia dome will be some walk in the park. I bet this game changes their mind

  4. jrfrom508 says: Dec 16, 2012 4:05 PM

Wow. Pats fan with a biiiiig grin on my face right here. Hahaha. All the talk from NY fans about how good that offense is and they can’t even put up a fieldgoal. Funny ha.

  5. logicalvoicesays says: Dec 16, 2012 4:05 PM

The lord doesn’t like cheaters like John Mara. Step aside New York…Washington now is in control of the NFC East…as I called it weeks ago.

  6. FinFan68 says: Dec 16, 2012 4:06 PM

Looks like they did better than 2 points…and the Giants didn’t even get that. WTH is with the Giants? How can one team look so good and then so very bad? Must drive Vegas nuts.

  7. skins23 says: Dec 16, 2012 4:06 PM

    What happened Gmen?

Wheres bigbluefan?? Nothing to say about RG3? Kirk?

Hope you enjoyed your time atop the division cause its over for the next 12 years.

  8. arrogantnation says: Dec 16, 2012 4:07 PM

Giants got punched in the mouth. Eli looked awful. Reminded me of their loss against the Redskins last year.

  9. drexelvol says: Dec 16, 2012 4:07 PM

Classy move by the Falcons taking a knee at the end of the game. We all know if the tables were turned, the giants would have run it in for another TD.

  10. geniusfan says: Dec 16, 2012 4:08 PM

All of the early games were boring blowouts, this was supposed to be “showdown Sunday” but the cream really rose today.

    Hahahahahahahahahaha!!!

Another great performance from the most inconsistent “elite” QB in the NFL!!

    E. Manning!!

  13. patriots123456 says: Dec 16, 2012 4:10 PM

    The Giants looked terrible.

Now is when you need to be peaking. They are in trouble for sure.

  14. cootschaos says: Dec 16, 2012 4:11 PM

I bet Giants fan wishes his team scored 2 points today.

  15. hartcarluncarlun says: Dec 16, 2012 4:11 PM

Not sure why people thought the Falcons would just lay down against the giants. We’ll see what’s next. First the Broncos but they hadn’t clicked yet…then the eagles who hasn’t loss after a bye in 15 years…then Dallas who getting hot.. Now the giants. Can’t wait to see what the reason will be tomorrow!!

  16. ranesmith says: Dec 16, 2012 4:11 PM

I can’t believe my pats got beat twice to the giants and the Super Bowl.

  17. atlho says: Dec 16, 2012 4:12 PM

Wow, nice goose egg giants! How does it feel for the redskins to be ahead of you now? And thanks for giving our backup qb some reps today.

Enjoy your ribbing, giants. Ya’ll haven’t shut up since last year’s playoff win against us! Go Falcons!

  18. axespray says: Dec 16, 2012 4:13 PM

weird season – Giants blow out a ton of good teams – then get blown out by the friggin’ fluke Falcons – Texans get blown out by Packers/Patriots …

    smh – weird

  19. bmorefalcon says: Dec 16, 2012 4:14 PM

That was fantastic! Hey Giants, I bet the idea of having two points is looking pretty good right about now!

  20. ham1 says: Dec 16, 2012 4:18 PM

    The NFC East tightens up.
It appears having a good back up is pretty important and all the naysayers questioning Shanny taking Kirk in the 4th….Thats why we are not coaches eh?

And Mara, cheaters never prosper. I bet he goes back and tries to pull some more junk before the redskins next game.

    BTW RG3 trade bait? Lol.

  21. sactown9er916 says: Dec 16, 2012 4:19 PM

    I
I have to admit, I wasn’t sold on Atlanta, however this win against the G-Men impressed me. Shut out a tough team playing for Sandy Hook Elementary.

  22. JMil_ATL says: Dec 16, 2012 4:19 PM

Still no respect for the Falcons? That’s ok.

    4-0 against the media’s darlings…NFC East.

As a fan I know the Falcons still need to win a playoff game. There’s no denying that. Hopefully this is the year.

  23. seenoland54 says: Dec 16, 2012 4:21 PM

1st and goal inside the five when they’re rolling with ease and the Falcons take a knee, shows there’s class in the NFC South…well, east of New Orleans anyway.

  24. otis52gsh says: Dec 16, 2012 4:23 PM

Still meaningless until they prove something in the playoffs. It’s that simple.

  25. seenoland54 says: Dec 16, 2012 4:24 PM

I want to see more than a playoff win, I would love to see them take it all…winning the Lombardi in the Saints house!

  26. edithpiaf51 says: Dec 16, 2012 4:29 PM

arrogantnation: The Giants looked awful, not Eli. The defense sucked and so did the entire offensen not even a field goal, that was disgusting. Also Hixon, Cruz, Wilson and others could not catch the ball, missed Eli passes. The entire team was disorganised. The team was all over the map. It is so easy to blame Eli. Blame the whole team, not Eli. The entire team needs an overhaul.

  27. nananatman says: Dec 16, 2012 4:31 PM

You should give back your pay checks, I can’t even begin to tell you how bad you’ve looked over the last six weeks Giants, even in NO if their defense had closed the deal on two possible interceptions, why are you being dictated to? You should be dictating.

  28. richwizl says: Dec 16, 2012 4:34 PM

The Falcons are a nightmare matchup for Big Blow, I guess.

Giants , hope you enjoy sitting home watching RG3 in the playoffs.

  34. clk320cpe says: Dec 16, 2012 5:10 PM

Giant fan here. When they started the last 4 games I thought they would go 2 out of 4 & just miss the playoffs. After today all bets are off. They lose the next 3. The Redskins win the division. Giants finish with a four game losing streak. Gawd we suck!

  35. bigbluefanuk says: Dec 16, 2012 5:23 PM

The oline and dline were pure crap. Most of the d was too seemed like chase was playing on his own.

Eli can’t throw to himself and if Dave diehl (well the whole line) keeps opening the door to pass rushers then there aren’t going to be accurate deep (or even short) passes.

Same goes for rushing … Wilson etc aren’t going to truck a 300 lbs d tackle.

  36. kev86 says: Dec 16, 2012 5:35 PM

Depressed Giants fan here. Very upset at the effort and execution. Falcons played great. Giants deserve to be where they are. Two games left. A lot tbd.

  37. raynman49 says: Dec 16, 2012 5:54 PM

Giants don’t seem motivated in some games. Seems like coaches not preparing well. This has been going on for a couple years. That d-line is overrated, and seems to lack a leader. Is Blackburn the only one who gives a damn? Looks like it.

  38. j0esixpack says: Dec 16, 2012 6:29 PM

So are Giants fans still outraged the Week 1 Power Rankings failed to recognize them as #1?

  39. gcsuk says: Dec 16, 2012 7:10 PM

As a Giants fan, I’ve never been this embarrassed by the team. This was as bad as it gets. But Patriots and Redskins fans really shouldn’t be gloating. The Patriots and Skins had NOTHING to do with this loss. If any fans get to gloat, it’s Falcons fans.

Congrats, Falcons (and their fans). You beat em but good. No excuses.

  40. steviaquinn says: Dec 16, 2012 7:10 PM

If the pundits were right, the falcons would have been 3-11 right now. true story.

  42. captatl says: Dec 16, 2012 8:16 PM

I think 2 points would have sufficed today. For those who say it means nothing, maybe so, but I’d bet the Giants fans are not the ones saying that. What it means is the Falcons were better in this particular game. It is no guarantee that ATL beats the 9er’s or Pack, but it does mean that the 9er’s and Pack should pack a lunch.

You can enjoy watching RG3 and the Redskins competing to win the division every year and winning playoff games year in and year out, unlike the fluke Giants who haven’t won any playoff games outside of those two lucky years where it took miracles to win your playoff games.

And Redskins fans can’t say anything? I seem to remember Skins putting an L in your column 2 weeks ago that helped you get to 8-6. The reason you’re behind us in the standings, remember? Plus we whooped up on the Giants earlier this year as well and the Giants escaped, as they admitted themselves.

Still waiting for Mr Wright and bigbluefan to show up and talk about their “repeating” chances. lol….

OK so let’s look at the hurdles the falcons over came as a team this year.
Week 2 Denver on Monday night (primetime against peyton)
Week 3 @SD west coast against a hot team on a short week(not as impressive)
Week 4-6 4th qrt winning drives
Week 8 @Philly (haven’t won there since the 80s and first loss Philly had after a bye under Andy Reid)
*First time in franchise history starting 8-0
Week 12 @TB (one of the hottest teams at the time beat them in their building)
Week 13 NO (Another primetime game & got the monkey off their back with their “big brother”)
Week 15 NYG (we all know the 24-2 and this was a great way to let the world know this year is different)
Literally to this point they have gotten every “monkey” off their back. How are you not sold that this team is different? The only thing left is what we’ll accomplish in 4 weeks

  47. roddytorock84 says: Dec 16, 2012 11:03 PM

Laughing awfully loud for a team that still has NOT won anything. This season isn’t over. It is a 3 way tie for 1st. Yeah, you hold the tiebreaker, but the Cowboys can still get in your way too, Nostradamus.
And by the way, losing to the Giants does not constitute “whooping up on”.

  49. darkjedi42 says: Dec 17, 2012 12:06 AM

For all the Atl haters, wake up, the Falcon are for real. Changed some coordinators, got the right offense going. Two great receivers. Matt Ryan is on the rise. Sure we played some bad game, but every team has a few bad games in the season. We may not win a Super Bowl this but we will make people take notice that’s it the Falcons time.

  50. cooklynn17 says: Dec 17, 2012 6:13 AM

Couple things to note, Giants fans don’t run when things go sour, case and point here I am. Falcons had an awesome win and deserve a ton of credit and we will make no excuses for our performance.

    1. The Giants still control their own playoff destiny, win their final two games and they are in.

    2. One can only hope we see the Falcons again this season, because things will be quite interesting.

See you in January, you know when the Giants are at their best.

  51. starderup says: Dec 17, 2012 9:08 AM

The pregame comments that ‘the Giants go the way Eli goes’ didn’t bode well after Samuels picked off Eli’s first pass.
My only fear at this point is that the Falcons may be peaking too early.

  52. robadawb says: Dec 17, 2012 12:16 PM

Respect for the regular season. Absolutely. But the playoffs? Sorry, but they have to win a playoff game first. I think they are perfectly capable of winning a playoff game but history has shown that this team does not win in the playoffs at home or on the road. With or without a bye.

Remember, the Falcons were the number one seed in the NFC with a first round bye when a hot Packer team came to the dome and beat them senseless.

You want respect? Win a playoff game.

  53. JMil_ATL says: Dec 19, 2012 7:59 PM

Is the last 3 years the only HISTORY that anyone knows??

    How about…
    2004 they beat St. Louis
2002 they beat Green Bay @ Green Bay (has hardly ever been done)
1998 they beat 49ers & Vikings before losing to the Broncos in the Super Bowl.

But hey, if you read and believe everything the media tells you then the Falcons have no success in the playoffs. It is only this regime that has not done well in the past 3 years. But they are new and young. Give them a little time.

Last year the Falcons lost to Giants who won the Super Bowl. Year before lost to Packers who won the Super Bowl. Three years ago lost to the Cardinals who then lost to the Steelers in the Super Bowl. The only team that doesn’t get a loss in the playoffs is the team that wins it all.

The Falcons in no way have a playoff record like the Packers, Giants, 49ers, or Patriots. But they all had to start somewhere. Hardly any team has the exact same roster as the previous year. Through free agency and injury teams are often very different from the previous season. So why isn’t each season judged on its own merit?

Why does the media say the Falcons can’t win a playoff game just because they haven’t in the past 3 years? Shouldn’t they also say that the 49ers can’t win the Super Bowl because they haven’t in the past 3 years? How about the Ravens or Texans?
