Mark Sanchez throws four picks as Jets playoff hopes come to end

As crazy as it seems, the New York Jets still entered Monday night’s game against the Tennessee Titans with a chance to backdoor their way into the playoffs.

Now those hopes are mercifully gone.

Jets quarterback Mark Sanchez threw four interceptions and lost a fumble late as the Jets fell to the Titans 14-10 on Monday night.

The Jets’ (6-8) quarterback situation continues to be an absolute disaster as Sanchez was completely erratic once again. Sanchez completed just 13 of 28 passes for 131 yards. He was intercepted four times, twice by Jason McCourty and twice by Michael Griffin. Sanchez has now thrown ten interceptions in the Jets last four games.

Jets quarterback Tim Tebow was finally given a full series at quarterback in the second quarter. It went pretty much as expected. After running 12 yards for a first down, Tebow carried for one yard, was sacked, took a delay of game penalty and misfired on a pass to Jeremy Kerley to force a Jets punt.

With the Titans (5-9) backed up on their own 6-yard line, running back Chris Johnson took a carry over left guard and broke free into the secondary. He out-raced safety Yeremiah Bell for a 94-yard touchdown to give Tennessee a 7-3 lead. It’s the second 90-plus yard touchdown run of Johnson’s career and sixth touchdown run of 80 yards or more.

The Jets forced a punt with Tennessee backed up deep in their own end that gave New York great field position at the Titans 35-yard line. Four plays later, Sanchez hit tight end Jeff Cumberland for a 17-yard touchdown to take a 10-7 lead.

The lead was short-lived. Jake Locker led the Titans on a seven-play scoring drive on the ensuing possession to retake the lead. Locker scored on a 13-yard run on a sweep around left end to give Tennessee a 14-10 lead.

Yet Sanchez still had two more chances to keep the Jets miniscule playoff hopes alive. The Jets drove to the edge of the Titans red zone before Sanchez threw another backbreaking interception. Sanchez double-clutched and threw weakly down the seam and was intercepted again by Griffin.

A shanked 19-yard punt by Brett Kern gave New York another opportunity with less than a minute and the ball at the Tennessee 25-yard line. This time Sanchez fumbled the snap and Tennessee recovered to end the game.

Johnson finished with 122 yards on 21 carries for the Titans. Locker was 13 of 22 for 149 yards and rushed seven times for 43 yards and a touchdown.

In his first game back in New York, wide receiver Braylon Edwards caught three passes for 47 yards.

  1. That botched snap was an appropriate exclamation point to mark the end of the Jets’ 2012 season.

  2. Yesterday I was kicking myself for benching the Cards D/ST in favor of the Titans D/ST

Well, Sanchez is just the gift that keeps on giving. Thank you Sanchez!

  3. Mark Sanchez is the worst QB in the league. I also do not think the wildcat idea has worked for the Jets. Rex Ryan also needs to get another job. I just hope next year Tim Tebow can find a team to better use his talents.

  4. Someone other than Mark Sanchez time

Tebow or McElroy. A change has to be made.

I’d go with McElroy, but I doubt he gets the chance. He’s this year’s version of Brady Quinn. Clearly the best QB on the team but stuck in the quagmire between Tebowmania and the high priced starter.

  5. I just think it was a mixture of mark just throwing bad balls and also the protection. That offense as a whole is just horrendous. Also, it’s kinda hard for an offense to generate some rhythm when mark is coming in and out every other series for some tebow time.

  6. The commissioner needs to step in, keep the Jets roster and coaching staff exactly the same next season, and give them 16 primetime games, because their games are always worth watching. I probably lost 5 lbs tonight from laughing so hard.

  7. Thanks Sanchez for losing the game the other team wanted to lose too! You just ruined my football season yet again and are a disgrace to the QB position! DRAFT TYLER WILSON!

  8. Simply horrific. Minus Ryan Leafs 1 for 15 game in KC I honestly believe this is the worst game i have ever seen a QB play, that includes Tebow. The jets call the game like they have a high school kid under center. 3 step right 3 step left run run, nothing advanced at all. Sparano, Ryan and Sanchez should be gone at the end of the year, and Tebow deserves at least a chance because there is NO WAY he could possibly be worse than what we just saw

  9. Wow, ya can’t make this up. 4 int’s by Sanchez and the Jets STILL had a legit chance to win the game but he couldn’t capitalize. I really feel for their D to play hard for 60 minutes and constantly getting stops all game long for their offense. I mean 25 yards away from the end zone to win the game, practically a few walking steps for a decent offense, with almost a minute on the clock and the Jets’ offense still finds a way to lose the game with an unnecessary turnover. Any average QB would’ve had the Jets up big in this one. Just a regular game managing QB that isn’t prone to turnovers would’ve been enough to get the job done, but Sanchez isn’t even on a game manager level. It’s just really sad to see it. Now their playoffs chances are down the drain thanks to the QB play and a whole bunch of what ifs being asked by their D.

  10. If Sanchez performance tonight wasn’t proof positive that he’s not a top NFL QB, nothing will. The Jets have to move this guy one way or the other, they can’t win with him as their no. 1 QB. The best he can be is a back up, and who in Gods name is going to pay 8 + mil. for a back up QB. The Jets really screwed themselves by extending him for an extra two years before the season. As the old saying goes, you made your bed, now lay in it.

  11. My God that was about the ugliest game I have seen in a while. The Sanchize needs to go. The GM who gave him the extension/raise as an apology for trying to flirt with Manning and trading for Tebow-real genius also. I dunno what Jets fans could have expected with Field Goal Fist Pumping Sparano as the OC. That whole organization is just screwed.

  12. The Jets general manager should’ve been fired a long time ago. From trading up in the draft to get Sanchez to giving him 20 mill in guaranteed money because his feeling were hurt. For giving Santonio Holmes his ridiculous, inescapable contract. For giving Revis a contract that he’ll want to renegotiate every other year. For multiple bad drafts. John Cena. For bringing a player back that called your front office idiots. The whole Tebow ridiculousness. But when you have an NFL owner that has said politics and back page headlines is more important than winning, what can you expect?

  13. The Jets SUCK and the Titans barely won the game. LOL

Now Titans fans are pumped about Griffin and the defense and “CJ2K is back baby.” LOL.

It’s fools gold people. They barely beat the Jets.

  14. Hey – it’s the season of giving. Sanchez feels it is better to give than it is for his wideouts to receive.

  15. I’m embarrassed to be a Jets fan. Sanchez, Tebow, Rex, Sparano and Tannenbaum need to go. These past 3 weeks of Jets football were the worst 3 football games I’ve ever seen. This is pitiful. Clean house.

  16. I think this site was the only one that had “playoff hopes”. The Jets are a pitiful team with a pathetic qb & a lousy coach. In fact the whole organization leaves much to be desired, but I’m sure we will still see story after story on them here.

  17. This guy really is just awful. Thank the lord Skins did not take this loser. I am glad that we suffered through Grossman rather than have it all in on Sanchize….this guy should be mowing grass somewhere, not playing football…Maybe Jets fans can get that fireman guy to play QB?

  18. I’m all for ripping the Jets but get some credibility. Sanchez “fumbled” the shot gun snap into the dirt? which was then kicked by the running back when he tried to pick it up? ahahaha.

  19. Let’s hear it losers, TEBOW, TEBOW, TEBOW. Yeh he may not be a very good quarterback but his ability to make others around him play above their normal game makes him a winner unlike Sanchez.

I watched a 1-4 team in Denver last year go 7-4 with Tebow and make the playoffs. Something the Jets did not do this year.

Hum, let’s extend Mr. 4 Interceptions’ contract . Maybe that will make him inspire his teammates enough to get into the playoffs next year.

  20. Is it me or was Johnson’s TD run reminiscent of Cruz’s TD reception last year? Late in the season, the Jets are playing an important game with playoff implications. They are playing pretty even, doing well on Defense, then BOOM! Johnson runs 96 yards & the team completely falls apart from there & pretty much quits. That is the same exact thing that happened Christmas Eve last year v. The Giants after Cruz’s 99 yard TD catch & run. It’s crazy how things happen sometimes.

  21. wait, why are we always talking about the jets? the fact that it doenst matter if theyre winning or losing, we are talking about them, makes me hate them just as much as the cowboys. cuz guess what the majority of america doesnt care.

  22. This is where Kirk Cousins ends up, right? No way they go with Barkley, after the USCanchez disaster.

    Sanchez… man. You blew it.

  23. Watching that game was like watching two old ladies in a fistfight. Won’t somebody stop them so we can go to bed?

  24. I can’t remember when so many prime time games were so meaningless in a season.
It’s an argument for going back to the single prime time game on Monday night.
I still remember when Monday night games were an event. Now, they’re often an afterthought.

  25. This is very biased reporting. If you actually count ALL of Sanchez’s completions, including those to the guys in the baby blue, he had a pretty good night. 😉

Wreck’s 2011 pledge that “as long as I am head coach Sanchez will be my QB” may wind up being his biggest blunder – even more humiliating than the two years of “guarantees” of making the Super Bowl.

Too bad for Sanchez – if he were selected by a team with a coach who didn’t instantly put that type of pressure on him, maybe he could have developed into a decent QB. It’s tough enough to be a 21 year old QB in the NFL without having your head coach make lofty promises on your behalf that he’s in no position to keep.

  26. Mark would have had a fine career and above average numbers as a QB in Minnesota, Kansas City, Arizona, and many other cities.

This kid tried to take a bite out of “The Big Apple.” and he was eaten alive.

  27. Vick to the Jets next year.
If not then maybe they can call up Vick’s cousin, Aaron Brooks, anything would be better than this dumpster fire.

  28. The best was when Gruden said ‘no one hits the homerun like cj’. Guess he’s never heard of Adrian Peterson.

  29. There’s no way Sanchez can survive this season. There’s gotta be at least 3 rookies in next year’s draft that are significant improvements

  30. 2 minutes left, 2 timeouts left and in the red zone…. I’m going to throw it into triple coverage on first down…..

50 seconds left at the 25 yardline…..okay time to redeem myself….and I’m going to fumble it.

    – Mark Sanchez

  31. We as a fanbase deserve better than what that team put out this year. From the day we got Tebow we were out of the playoffs. I have no idea what the front office is thinking, and what will happen now. We got gifted the game and still didn’t want it. We dont deserve to be near the playoffs.

  32. That Guy needs to decline that extension he signd..he is horrible after 4 years. Can’t see him starting on any team next year and that’s sayin a lot in a leafed with 32 teams and under 10 good QBs

  33. why does the jets quarterback situation / bad play get so much more coverage all over the media than the chiefs (I’m not including renowned coverage in this statement) . the chiefs q b play has been just as bad. why not more info and dissection of every detail for Quinn and cassel like their is for Sanchez? its not right. ESPN and NFL network are in love with the jets

  34. Yeah jets r terrible. I was nervous there for a second when kern had a crappy punt giving Sanchez a chance to win……then I remembered we were playing the jets. Go titans!

  35. Mark seems to be doing things like this more and more often. I know Tim Tebow has had limited experience: his rookie season, one year begrudgingly given the reigns to a losing team, and then no shot in NY, but has Tebow ever thrown 4 picks in a game?

  36. What a joke of a team. They are definitely the laughing stock of Football. You ask for a circus and you get one. The NYG didn’t score a point but still looked better than the JETS. Lmao

  37. Well, that might have been the worst NFL game I’ve ever seen. Add in the atrocious MNF booth for extra pain…they make Theismann, Dierdorf etc look good in comparison.

  38. The snaps from Mangold (when Sanchez wasn’t under center) were often low this night (between knees and shins, mostly)…the one that ended the Jets’ hopes was the worst, though…barely 2 inches off the ground…much tonight was Sanchez’ fault, but the final fumble wasn’t…and one other thing wasn’t: Edwards’ arm was pulled hard as he began to jump for what turned out to be the third interception…should have been dpi…

In the bigger picture, a horrible end to a horrible season for the Jets…

  39. I’ve been watching the Jets for many years now, and this was the worse display of offense I’ve ever seen. Bad play calling, poor execution, terrible everything. If changes aren’t made, something is wrong. The more I see Rex, the more I see his father. A great defensive coach, not a head coach…

  40. Hopefully that’s the last game Sanchez ever plays for the Jets. After watching that game and listening to his press conference; he needs to go. If he’s still learning that throwing the ball late results in the ball getting intercepted in his 4th season, he’ll never learn.

  41. The Jets are a trainwreck simple ass that..Dont know how this team went from the AFC championship to this…And um one more thing Tebow is the worst most overrated player ever in the NFL..Somewhere B Bosworth is laughing at him.

  42. I’ve said it 10,000 times… HOW THE HELL IS MARK SANCHEZ STILL THE STARTER FOR THE BIGGEST MARKET IN PRO FOOTBALL???

I looked it up, 90+ turnovers by him in his 3+ years in the league. If he was our QB i’d go IN-sane!

  43. Can we finally call a moratorium on articles about these clowns? No more Tebow, no more Rex, no more Sanchize. No more Woody. No more J-E-T-S.

  44. Way to mis-handle your QB, Coach Ryan. Last time I saw a head coach manage a quarterback that badly, your daddy and Iron Mike were turning the Bears into a one year wonder instead of a ten year dynasty.

  45. How can the jets keep Sanchez or Ryan going forward? Sanchez is owed some serious dough in ’13 so they’re likely to be stuck with him on the roster, but keeping Rex after that performance just does not seem possible.

    -Glad I’m a Giants fan

  46. “Jets quarterback Tim Tebow was finally given a full series at quarterback in the second quarter. It went pretty much as expected. After running 12 yards for a first down, Tebow carried for one yard, was sacked, took a delay of game penalty and misfired on a pass to Jeremy Kerley to force a Jets punt.”

    Pretty much as expected?

It is impossible to read about Tebow without an attack. Why? Didnt he take over a 1-4 team and take them to the playoffs?

Tebow who after about 300 passes has thrown 17 tds and 9 ints compared to Sanchez after nearly 200o passes has thrown 68 tds and 125 ints.
But 3 years isn’t enough to realize how bad this guy is and we have the spectacle of the big dummy Trent Dilfer talking about Tebow and how that 1 series caused Sanchez to lose his momentum. This after putting up 3 points!! series and poor Sanchez lost hius timing? It was bizarre how angry at Tebow’s series Dilfer was. Not the 5 turnovers. Including the bad snap he should’ve handled with ease.

I would love to have seen Tebow given a chance in the last 5 minutes. I wouldn’t bet against him.

  47. Lose the next two, please! Play the 3rd QB, fire all the coaches except Rex and get rid of mike t. Swallow ur pride, walk across the hall, and knock on the giant’s GM door and beg for some help on how to draft and put together a team bc this franchise, from the owner down, has ZERO clue what they’re doing! Just an offensive product. Still cannot believe they brought Tebow here. I rather be a bills fan, and that’s saying something.

  48. There are some games that are so bad that they can only be described as “career ending.” This was one of them.

Go back and watch the 4 interceptions.
Sanchez can’t blame pass protection because he wasn’t hit as he threw on any of those 4 passes.

Sanchez can’t blame his offensive line for allowing a defensive lineman to deflect any of the passes because none of the balls were altered at the line of scrimmage.

Sanchez can’t blame his receivers for falling down or knocking the ball into the air prior to the interception, since none of his intended 4 receivers fell down or were able to get their hands on those passes.

Sanchez can’t really blame the Tennessee Titans defenders (Griffin and McCourty) for making terrific plays, since only 1 of his 4 passes came close to requiring heroic efforts to intercept (the sideline interception by McCourty).

All 4 interceptions were passes thrown without any pressure towards well-covered receivers that missed those receivers by anywhere between 3-10 yards. Sanchez was routinely throwing the ball towards receivers who had drawn safety help, which is why a safety (Michael Griffin) finished with two interceptions.

And that to me should be enough to be career ending. We’ve all seen even great QBs like Manning and Brady have 3+ INT games, but almost always, on 1 or 2 of the INTs, either the QBs were hit as they threw, or the pass was altered in the air, or a receiver slipped, or a defender made a terrific play to intercept a nearly uncatchable ball.

I’ve never seen a QB be guilty of bad decision-making AND bad accuracy without any “mitigating” factors on all 4 of his interceptions in a single game.

  49. Tirico at the end… “That’s the way this game should end. That’s the way the Jets’ season should end. UGLY!!” Priceless

  50. Well, everything here’s gonna be negative on the Jets. Deservedly so.

But if I can put some whipped cream on the turds here, Braylon definitely looks like he can still play. He’s clearly the best WR on the Jets. It just makes me wonder why they let him get away (and for pennies) in the first place. They shouldn’t have marooned their mediocre QB with even less talent at WR. Sanchez was able to disguise his deficiencies with enough talent catching the ball way back when, but.. not so anymore.

Bottom line though, is just that he’s not and never will be a franchise guy. It’s time to move on at QB, definitely at Offensive Coordinator, and probably at Head Coach and General Manager.

They had a decent run for awhile, but this year is an absolute train wreck.

  51. I doubt Tebow would have thrown 4 picks… they probably would have won if he had played qb the whole second half.

  52. What a game! It made up for that stinker of a contest on Sunday Night. I mean really, who wants to see two of the best teams in the NFL in a thriller when you have Jets, Titans in an offensive explosion the following night?

  53. This has to be his last game as a starting NFL quarterback. His supporting cast may not be the best, but he is just awful. Give McElroy a chance the rest of the season, because Tebow is just as bad as Sanchez.

  54. I’ve been a supporter of Sanchez throughout his career. But I think this game did it for me. The Jets had the perfect opportunity to keep their playoff hopes alive tonight and couldn’t do that, and yes, Sanchez blew this game for them.

They should just start Tebow or McElroy for the last two weeks. Then have Sanchez and McElroy compete for the starting job next year. Maybe bring in a third guy into the competition too.

  55. i’ve been a mark sanchez supporter for all this time. ok wavering for most of this season. but that’s gonna be about it. true the jets needed to help you more but you still needed to show up better. over and out

  56. YESSS! even though I like tebow and he played better then sanchez. They lost giving my bengals another better chance to get in if they beat the steelers which no one say they can do

  57. The poor Jets are a dumpster fire. Unfortunately it’s another round of ‘blow up the team and start over’. I honestly thought the Rex Ryan era would be different. Fool me once … etc etc.

  58. I’m not Jets fans…But it is almost embarrassing to me to watch Sanchez struggle. While Ryan looks like a total idiot for sticking with him. Take the cap hit and move on already.

  59. The fact that they still had playoff hopes after their play all season was amazing . What a disgrace! What a joke. What a mess. We weren’t playing the 49ers…but the Titans. Mark Sanchez goodbye…you may never start anywhere again after this season. Rex love ya man…but you need to go too…Tony Sparano makes you miss Brian Scottenheimer….Tannebaum…look what you have created…hope that you are proud of the garbage dump…
Bill Polian….take us on as a charity case and stop the laughing stock of the NFL to become good again.
I am sick to my stomach….

  60. I want to personally thank NBC Sports for having the guts and foresight to flex out of the Jets v Chargers game two weeks ago.

Even when the Jets were winning a few years ago they were difficult to watch. Last night, I was able to catch up on Golden Girls reruns.

The New York Jets, ESPN’s team.

  61. Tebows misfired pass came after they went 5 wide and the titans blitzed, which was of course not picked up. And he has to run around, do some shenanigans, and then throw it away, while still having to target a guy.

Sucks to be a jets fan, screw them.

    Eff da jests. Er. Jets

  62. maybe last nights game will serve as “the fumble” did back in 1978 to propel the Giants to address their decades of mismanagment. These Jets are rotten to the core. where is Justin Birkle when we need him?

  63. Maybe now that the Jests have been eliminated from the playoffs, we won’t have to be hearing about their incompetence from top to bottom every day. I’ve never heard of a losing team getting so much media coverage.

  64. Sanchez is not a great QB but he could be so much better.

He makes his share of bone head mistakes but his receivers drop a lot of easy passes and using Teebow for more than short yardage situations or special teams is not the way to develop the QB on your team. Coaching has to change.

  65. I have nothing against the Jets but I am sick of hearing stories about their inept quarterbacks, loud mouthed head coach and total team dysfunction. It’s past time to dismantle that trainwreck of a franchise and start all over.

  66. What a train wreck. This franchise is the laughingstock of the NFL. Time for both Ryan boys to shut up and go home.

  67. well, I guess I’m the lucky one, so here goes…

    THE JETS STINK!!!

I can’t believe these two teams were actually begging the other to win the game.

So glad the Giants are close by.

  68. lgw91s says:
    Dec 18, 2012 5:40 AM
Do they still call him “The Sanchize”?
    =================================
Yes, but only because I think he owns a McDonalds or Papa Johns. Owe wait, that is Peyton Mannning. My bad. (sarc)

  69. I am almost ashamed to continue to watch the Jets with Sanchez in there. It’s like looking at someone’s dirty laundry, something you keep hidden not something you show on national TV.

For me, pity is not entertaining.

  70. Goodbye Rex Ryan, your inability to prove your merit as an NFL coach has now been completely confirmed. How do you lose a game like this without pulling Sanchez after 2 pics. It is unfortunate that you felt it more important to “prove your point” than to win.

  71. Well, that guarantees there will be at least two fewer people in NY next year, Ryan and Sanchez. Maybe three, because I don’t see Tebow sticking around (ship him to the Patriots where he can get an education from the best!).

  72. The worst part is…. when Tebow does start a game, no matter how bad he is, look what you are comparing him too.

  73. At least with Tebow you still get W’s with ugly QB play- and Tebow can ALWAYS score in the red zone.

Sanchez is just getting worse every single week.

I think Sanchez got sucked in by his own NY mystique b/c he doesn’t look like he has any idea what he’s doing on the field.

  74. At least Rex is going down with the ship, you can’t bring him, the GM, coaches and about 50% of that roster back.

The Jets job is an attractive one, so you have to wonder if Cowher or Gruden dare take the challenge of entering Bill and Tom’s division? Doubt a college coach could make it in the league in NY for a first time gig. Maybe the Jets are Sabans next stop?

  75. Another sad year for a long time Jet fan. It seems that it does’t matter who they bring in to run this organization, it all falls apart in the end. Who in there right mind would want to come to this team and help rebuild it. I suspect even players will start to avoid coming to this dysfunctional organization. I can’t see myself spending any more money for season tickets to watch this mess. When I want to go to a game I can get tickets for 50.00 bucks or less instead of what I pay for season tickets. Very sad day for this Jet fans.

  76. This kid reminds me of Jim Plunkett. Plunkett was a first round pick of the New England Pats and just did not have a good team around him. He became shell shocked, lost his MOjo. He went to the 49ers, still no MOjo. But went to the Raiders, sat and watched, and when called on, found his MOjo. He also found himself behind maybe the best o-line in NFL history. I think he can come back and be a great QB, NY is just to much pressure for some QB’s. It is the lion’s den for sure. He needs to come back with a team with a great o-line, and get these shells out of his head, sit awhile and wait for his chance again. He will not be a Jet next year.

  77. Always good when you put up a dreadful performance on national television and no one notices because they either didn’t watch or are too busy making fun of the Jets.

Only bad thing is this probably means that Michael Griffin is going to be back next season.. *stabs eyes out*.

  78. What in the world does Greg McElroy need to do to get a shot? He is the only NY QB to look even half-decent this season.

I mean, this has to be Rex simply being completely unable to admit a mistake and afraid that playing McElroy now will prove what a huge mistake he made not giving this kid a fair shot.

  79. Last nights game was the best comedy show I have seen in years! Pass into triple coverage and expect the receiver to catch it was hilarious.

  80. And once again Sanchez says ” I need to learn from my mistakes”. He must be a slow learner because he gets a F in every game. The whole team sucks.

  81. Sanchez has terrible decision making, that’s all really. His accuracy is fine, he just throws dumb balls like if he was playing Madden.

  82. OK OK, if Mark Sanchez was on a team with Calvin Johnson and Plaxico Burress in his prime and an offensive line with several all pro players and Bill Walsh as his offensive coordinator (the finest offensive line of all time), then how would he do ? I’m just saying… It’s a team game ! The Jets let Plaxico Burress go, Braulon Edwards go, and Sanantonio “the cancer with talent” Holmes gets injured, as does Dustin Keller…. Then what weapons does Sanche have to assist him in directing the offense to high point totals ? No one but rookies and a backup tight end Cumberland…

    I’m a Titans/Oilers fan and NFL fan for 34 years…

It’s the GM’s fault in New York… He is the one who should be going, going, gone !

Think about it! P.S. Tim Tebow will be the starting Quarterback for the Jacksonville Jaguars in 2013 and he will prove all the critics wrong, weekly again ! Book it !
