Jets quarterback Mark Sanchez had his worst game yet in a miserable season on Monday night, throwing four interceptions in a loss to the Titans that eliminated the Jets from playoff contention. After the game, he took the loss on his own shoulders.
“It doesn’t feel good hurting your team like that,” Sanchez said. “I made a couple of mistakes that I shouldn’t have made again. It doesn’t feel good, and I’ve got to learn from them and play better for us to win.”
Sanchez is understating the number of mistakes he made by saying “a couple,” but he’s obviously right that he hurt his team with the way he played. The big question in the short term is whether Jets coach Rex Ryan will bench Sanchez for the final two games of the season, and the even bigger question going forward is whether the Jets will acquire another quarterback in the offseason. Because right now, none of the three quarterbacks on the Jets -- Sanchez, Tim Tebow and Greg McElroy -- appears to be the answer going forward.
Ryan didn’t talk about benching Sanchez after the game, but he did talk about how much the loss hurt.
“It’s a devastating loss, out of the playoffs, and it hurts beyond belief,” Ryan said. “I think the thing that really hurts the most is we’ve got no one to blame but ourselves.”
That’s true. And Sanchez deserves the most blame of all.
