Report: Bills sign Kraig Urbik to contract extension

Kraig Urbik AP

The Bills might be in the market for a quarterback and a wide receiver this offseason, but they seem to be happy with their right guard.

James Walker of ESPN.com reports that the team has agreed to a contract extension with starting right guard Kraig Urbik. According to Walker, the deal is for four years and $15 million although there’s no mention of how much of that money may be guaranteed.

Urbik took over the starting job in 2011 and has started all 11 games that he’s played for the Bills this season. He was originally a third-round pick of the Steelers in the 2009 draft, but was waived before the start of his second season.

The Bills offensive line has helped C.J. Spiller cross the 1,000-yard mark for the first time in his career this season. Urbik isn’t the last piece of housekeeping they’ll need to do if they want to return that line intact next season. Left guard Andy Levitre is also playing out the final year of his contract and it will almost certainly take longer to get a new deal done for him as he comes off a very strong season up front in Buffalo.

IIRC the Steelers were wanting to stash him on the practice squad and were shuffling the roster due to injuries; but I cannot say that for sure.

Definitely a good move by the Bills.

This is a guy that was brought over to Doug Whaley. Fire Nix. Promote Whaley. Let him run the show.

Levitre is going to require at least 5/yr 30 million with 12 million guaranteed. I love our Offensive line exactly the way it is. All five starters are above average and play very well together. The only thing that bothers me is that Eric Wood seems to be extremely injury prone. I believe that he has made it to IR every year since putting on a Bills uniform. There is a very good chance he ends up there again next season. There has to be something that the training staff can do to prevent more problems with his health. They fix Wood and the Bills have a top 5 Offensive line.

The Steelers totally missed the boat on releasing him.
