McCoy starting for Eagles, Vick to be third quarterback

LeSean McCoy AP

The Eagles have no shot of making the playoffs and running back LeSean McCoy has missed the last four games as a result of a concussion, but neither of those things are stopping him from being in the starting lineup against the Redskins this weekend.

Coach Andy Reid said Wednesday that McCoy will start ahead of rookie Bryce Brown on Sunday.

“When you’re healthy, you play,” Reid said, via the Philadelphia Daily News.

Don’t tell that to quarterback Michael Vick. Vick is also recovered from a concussion, but it will be a long shot that he plays at all. Jeff McLane of the Philadelphia Inquirer reports that Eagles coach Andy Reid said Wednesday that Trent Edwards will be the backup quarterback against the Redskins. Reid also said that Vick might not dress for the game, something that’s the case for most of the third-stringers around the league.

The difference between the two situations is pretty clear. McCoy and quarterback Nick Foles have a future with the Eagles while Vick’s time with the team is nearing its end. He hasn’t made a fuss about being dropped to backup and we don’t imagine we’ll hear one about being third on the depth chart since malcontents are rarely prized by teams looking to sign a quarterback who might not wind up as their starter.

I know McCoy is healthy, but why risk it in a game that is pointless ?

I can’t even get up for the Eagles. They are so mediocre and UFL quality of a franchise. Redskins win 45-7.

Like all coaches, Andy Reid must suffer from some form of cognitive dissonance. How can he say “When you’re healthy, you play” when he’s not even allowing Mike Vick to dress? Just tell the truth or say nothing at all. Or come up with better lies.

Being a lifelong Eagles fan, this is the first time that I can ever remember hoping the Eagles lose. It has nothing to do with draft picks. I like RGIII and I am ready to see something new in the playoffs. That team is hot and could make a big splash this year. I am still an Eagles fan, and next year I hope we destroy them along with everyone else they play. But for right now, go Redskins!! Til next year

  6. joebloww says: Dec 19, 2012 1:50 PM

Just as well the Eagles don’t make the playoffs, they would just choke anyway.

  7. mungman69 says: Dec 19, 2012 1:51 PM

Yea, why play McCoy. All he can do is hurt his head again. Besides, Brice Brown needs a lot of work if he will ever have a chance of becoming a star running back in the NFL. Stupid move.

  8. eaglesfan94 says: Dec 19, 2012 1:51 PM

Well he started off as third-string. I guess now he’s coming full circle.

  9. mwcarolina says: Dec 19, 2012 1:56 PM

ok, i can see why Foles is the starting QB, BUT if Vick is healthy, why is he not the 2nd stringer?? so basically if Foles gets hurt, they throw in a worse QB than Vick ever could be?? Foles should start, the Eagles need to see if he has a shot at being the future, but Edwards is a career backup, leave him as the 3rd stringer if Vick is healthy.

Playing Shady is stupid. No upside, lots of downside. I’m surprised he even *wants* to play. It makes zero sense. He doesn’t need the reps, Brown does. So does Foles. But hey…another horrible decision by the Teflon Walrus. Might as well destroy our best player on your way out. He’ll run run him 30 times.

  14. rtant2013 says: Dec 19, 2012 2:08 PM

I guess Reid didn’t learn from the other Redskins game earlier this year. Played him late in a blowout and he gets concussed, now he is going to play him in a game that doesn’t matter? Bad move in my opinion, plus I was hoping wr could play Brown, he carries the ball way to lose and far from his body, Redskins were going to eat him alive.

like say “We were trying to catch up and win the game” when asked why he gave McCoy the ball with less than a 2 minutes left in a game down by about 25 points.

  16. ncs115 says: Dec 19, 2012 2:26 PM

This is another unfortunate sign that Jeffrey Lurie will find a way to explain to us that Andy Reid is coming back for the final year of his contract. If that happens, then we become the cheapest team in the league hands down. Pay no attention to the fact that only the Jaguars spent less money this year on players. This is the caliber of team that we have become.

  17. ncs115 says: Dec 19, 2012 2:27 PM

Oh yeah….and one word as to why Shady should not play the rest of this year….Westbrook….remember what happened to him?

  18. thebrownrelease says: Dec 19, 2012 2:28 PM

Lol yeah because Vick was clearly the problem. How’s Foles been looking by the way??? Bryce Brown has looked great, they should get rid of McCoy too huh? Lol wow.

  19. olcap says: Dec 19, 2012 2:31 PM

I can’t wait to witness the all-out NFL war that will break out between the many teams that will be wanting to swoop down and steal Michael away from all the other teams that want him so bad they can TASTE it!

It ain’t pointless to Washington, New York or Dallas, and Reid knows it. He’s playing spoiler the rest of the way.

Just reading the posts, and I know eagle fans are completely disenchanted with their team, but this game is going to be very dangerous for the skins. It’s just one of the those games that scare me. Going into philly, against a team with nothing to lose, and knowing that they would love nothing better than to ruin the skins playoff hopes. These division games, no matter the record, end up being nail biters. Also, McCoy always plays like a beast against the skins.

  22. kaf39 says: Dec 19, 2012 3:04 PM

Eagles NEED Shady next year. the season is over so let him rest!

You all that want Vick gone

Vicks worse day is better than Foles best game. Even the commentators are jumping off the ship on Foles. Mechanics are bad, throws are terrible and way off mark. Sure he can throw screens, but who can’t? He should have been picked at least 7 or 8 times already but DBs can’t catch. Misses wide open guys bc he only looks at one receiver. Everyone keeps saying well he is a rookie and needs to get some games in. When is enough games proof that he won’t make it? Foles is the next Kevin Kolb. Remember him?? Kevin Kolb??? oh yea the third stringer for Arizona right now. Wasn’t he supposed to be the future of Philly also? I believe so. How’d that work out? Vick needs one more year under a different coach and with an O-LINE. And i think he would turn some heads. Still has enough in the tank to get a playoff run going.

Arizona just called and wanted to find out about the Vick situation in the Offseason

  25. ilovefoolsball says: Dec 19, 2012 3:36 PM

How much did they sign Vick to?

  26. nomoreseasontix says: Dec 19, 2012 3:46 PM

Sure is a shame that the NFL has no teams west of the Mississippi.
Oh… They do? And some good ones?
Then, why do we only read about bad east coast teams?

  27. arson81 says: Dec 19, 2012 4:38 PM

I really don’t see the point in risking further injury to McCoy at this point in the season. The possible negatives far outweigh anything that could be gained by his playing.

But of course most of the decisions that have come from the Eagles management/coaching staff have been baffling for the last two seasons, so why am I surprised.

  28. ace8842 says: Dec 19, 2012 4:47 PM

I think there are a lot of Redskins and Giants fans saying don’t use McCoy, for obvious selfish reasons. Brown has killed this team with his fumbles late in 3 of the last 4 games. Reid isn’t going to be here, so he doesn’t care about what happens to McCoy, he cares about winning games. It is clearly in the interest of the players on the team that McCoy plays. He’s a much better receiving back than Brown is.

  29. ace8842 says: Dec 19, 2012 4:49 PM

People are way too premature judging Foles. He has been playing with a backup RB, backup top WR, backup TE, 3 or 4 backup offensive lineman….at the end of last game his fullback and tight end got hurt…by the end of the game Maclin was the only starter on the entire offense! No one could succeed under those circumstances as a rookie, especially when you consider the defense was awful his first few games. He gets no turnovers, no kick or punt returns, no short fields…

  30. hollymolley says: Dec 19, 2012 4:55 PM

Foles is not a franchise QB, just another Eagles also-ran…..

    ——————————————–

Plain bias towards Vick – let me drop some knowledge on you…

Foles is a third round rookie quarterback, who has practically identical numbers to Vick even though he’s played with a worse offensive line and for at least part of (and mostly for majority) without the number one running back, number one receiver and number one tight end.

Now yeah the numbers are essentially the same, but Foles also has taken better care of the football (169 attempts between picks) and made a less talented offensive line look better (hello blitz recognition, pre-snap reads, and quick decisions).

Is Foles definitely a franchise quarterback? I don’t know, but he’s at least got a chance to get better and become that. Vick is what he always was a fragile athlete playing quarterback except now he’s a declining fragile athlete playing quarterback.

And Kolb would be Arizona’s starting quarterback if healthy – lead them to a 4-1 start before he got hurt and destroyed the Eagles and Vick…

  32. ejm845 says: Dec 19, 2012 5:23 PM

i guess they dont want foles looking over his shoulder like they had kolb looking over his shoulder when they keep bringing vick in for that assinine pathedic wildcat offence

  33. flipadelphia77777 says: Dec 19, 2012 5:40 PM

Who cares if Vick is healthy? He’s not playing because he is no longer the starter, how is that so hard for everyone to understand why he wouldn’t play? And as give McCoy he should play. We are paying him up play.

  34. Mr. Wright 212 says: Dec 19, 2012 5:57 PM

I’m much less worried about McCoy when Vick isn’t on the field, ace8842.

  35. manilarizzo says: Dec 19, 2012 7:47 PM

they can start Randall Cunninghom and Reggie White and not have a chance this weekend. Rg3 on bench resting by the 3rd quarter as the Skins pull away in an easy W.
