DeAngelo Hall: Ref falsely claimed I threatened to kill him

AP

Redskins cornerback DeAngelo Hall was fined $30,000 for screaming at an official during an October 28 game against the Steelers. Now Hall says the official falsely told the NFL that Hall had threatened to kill him during their heated exchange.

Hall told the Washington Post that head linesman Dana McKenzie told the league office that the reason he ejected Hall from the game was that Hall issued a death threat. Hall says that’s simply not true.

“Yeah, he said that’s what threw the flag for the ejection,” Hall said. “And so, you know, that didn’t happen. That should have never happened, and we wouldn’t be having this conversation. There’s just a lot of things that are unresolved with that case that have to be resolved.”

Hall said that in the process of appealing his fine, he began to believe that the NFL Players Association never should have accepted the Collective Bargaining Agreement that ended the lockout last year. According to Hall, the players gave the league office far too much authority to discipline them.

“Any time you’ve got one person that’s the judge, jury and executioner — he makes the fine, then he hears the appeal, then he decides the amount — it’s just tough. It’s just tough,” Hall said. “The CBA we agreed on probably wasn’t in the best interests of the players, from my viewpoint.”

Although Hall stopped short of criticizing the union, he said that he now wishes he had immediately hired his own lawyer when the NFL fined him, instead of relying on help from the Players Association, which is what he has done so far.

“I should have took a step back and got independent counsel, figured the right, I guess, path to go on,” Hall said. “That’s kind of what we’re trying to do now, I mean, because what happened shouldn’t have happened. He shouldn’t have came at me like he did. I shouldn’t have came back at him. But it happened. But after that, I was told that I said I was going to ‘[profanity] kill him,’ which didn’t happen.”

If there’s still a dispute about exactly what Hall said to McKenzie, that suggests that no audio of the exchange exists, and we’ll likely never know who’s telling the truth. But a $30,000 fine obviously means the NFL thinks Hall said something that went way too far.

  1. I heard from a reliable source that the ref actually used a racial slur towards DHall and that pretty much caused him to flip. We’ll see if that part of it makes the news and if the ref sees disciplinary action for it. I’d say he certainly should.

Your source does not sound reliable to me. Hall is not particularly subtle, so if some ref used a racial slur, he would be telling the world right now, and he didn’t say anything about it.

  3. “According to Hall, the players gave the league office far too much authority to discipline them.”

Hall went on to say “This is an absolute tragedy ! We can’t make death threats, we can’t make helmet to helmet hits, no more crackback blocks, no bounties, hell there ain’t nothing fun left to do in this league.”

Lol thanks for that. I needed a good laugh.

  5. Hall lost all credibility with me when he denied slapping Adrian Peterson in the face in a pile. Hall is a loser and a liar. Why not just man up and admit it that you’re not only a liar but also a cheater. Who else in the NFL stoops to such tactics so consistently?

  6. Funny how Hall is routinely “misunderstood” or “misquoted” yet such things rarely happen to other players. Hall needs to do some serious self evaluation. He’s one guy I actually look forward to hearing about going broke once his career is over.

  7. Funny how certain athletes always play the race card when they get caught with their hands in the cookie jar.

  8. There you go, blame it on the ref. It’s a wonder that there are anyone willing to officiate games with these prima Donna players and coaches. Intailted jerks!

  9. @skins23

Does ur anonymous source by chance also know who killed Biggie? Ur such a liar!

    Who’s Biggie?

  10. Broke and on the street in five years…sad. He has been a hot head since his days at vatech . Leopards don’t lose their spots. He is not to be confused with a rocket scientist wanna be fifth grader. His past indicates he protests too much…

I guess he has to do that. If you don’t play the race card and you want to be judged on your actions instead of skin color, they say you’re not a real black but only a cornball black.

  12. I’m completely serious. I’m not a huge fan of Hall’s either, he usually gets on my nerves more than anything. But I heard this from people with very close ties to the Skins players. We’ll see if it comes out. If it does, couple of you clowns are gonna be eating crow.

You don’t believe me, go back and look at the ‘Mike Shanahan is grumpy’ thread from this site from last October. I knew back then we were getting RG3 months before people were talking about it.

  13. Look , the players need to play. All of this nonsense of arguing back and forth with a ref needs to stop and to stop now! The Redskins have had to many unsportsmanlike penalties this year. There is nothing to prove. The call is what it is and your voice will be of no influence. Skins need to just shut up and line up to play another down. The playoff picture is in sight, so stay focused and let your play do the talking.

  14. Why do players keep hiring Joel Segal as their agent? Hall, Vick, Santonio, Chris Johnson, Reggie Bush. Does he advertise “the lowest commission fees in the biz” in an effort to draw guys who don’t care about their reputation? They just want to cash in and quit.

You would think a guy with this much experience at damage control would be better at it.

  15. Once again. Lets revisit this episode.

TV timeout was called, so Hall, like every player, removed his helmet.

The idea he went ballistic is not so. They were in a heated exchange and it looked alot like two men arguing.

Not the first or last time thats going to happen on the field.

But the refs are the peace keepers. He was jawwing pretty hard back at Hall and remember, he was thrown to the ground and there was no call.

Not tight for Hall, but clearly they were both going at it.

  16. Skins23 –

We all thank you so much for the inside scoop. I’ll tell all my friends that I know you. Please keep us up to date on all the latest Skins info ( this is just soooooo exciting!)

  17. I always find it amusing when people get on athletes for the way they talk like their supposed to be English professors instead of you know football players, and by the way D Hall never once said anything about race so why are posters accusing him of playing the race card?

  18. Honestly. The fact that Hall wasn’t suspended leads me to believe the ref may have also been in the wrong. With that said dude is a knucklehead. Ok corner getting paid locked down corner money. Hopefully he’s the last of the Vinny C. Era.

  19. Players and coaches get away with way to much screaming at refs. When they do that they are not good role models and should learn to control themselves or face punishment

  20. Hall is the quintessential knucklehead, but one thing he says is true: any time an NFL player is threatened with discipline, they may as well lawyer up a la Jonathan Vilma…..the Saints proved that with a good lawyer anyone can beat the rap.

The answer to your question regarding his and many others players awful public speaking and/or improper Grammar is simply that every American, especially successful ones, should strive to better themselves and put their best foot forward at all times, especially when speaking. It’s no wonder that many athletes are looked down on because of their inability to speak properly. Leave the gibberish in the hood, I have and it’s worked out nicely.

  22. What is he referring to by “didn’t happen”? The threat or the killing ? And why does he not disclose what he did say?

  23. Here comes another lawsuit:

  24. DH has been a bum his whole career, look at ATL. No wonder they got rid of him. For all the talking and nonsense he does, he’s not even good. Trash

  25. None of us know what was said by either person. Just making personal attacks on Hall makes you look jealous. But it was one mans word against the others. Of course the league is going to back up the official. Did Hall meet with the Commissioner about this?

  26. Oh yea i dont see tom brady, aaron rodgers, or peyton manning ever yelling at referees. How dare a non qb even look at a ref. oh yea and most of the time refs dont respond well this one was going back and forth with hall. Which one of u know what the ref was saying. Ill wait
