Patrick Peterson says he’s best corner in league

Patrick Peterson, Calvin Johnson AP

Arizona Cardinals cornerback Patrick Peterson feels he knows who is the best cornerback in the league. It’s not Darrelle Revis or Charles Tillman or Richard Sherman.

In Peterson’s opinion no one is playing better at the cornerback position than he is.

According to Bob Baum of the Associated Press, Peterson wasn’t shy with his opinion when he was asked if he believes he’s the best cornerback in the league.

”I believe so,” Peterson said. ”I believe I’m playing at a top level right now. Week in and week out, I’m given the opposing team’s No. 1 receiver and I believe I’m handling that pretty well so far.”

The Cardinals 2011 first round draft pick Peterson is tied for second in the league with seven interceptions. He is tied with New York Giants safety Stevie Brown and one interception behind Chicago Bears cornerback Tim Jennings for the league lead. Peterson picked off Detroit Lions quarterback Matthew Stafford to set up the go-ahead score in the Cardinals 38-10 win over the Lions on Sunday.

Peterson now has interceptions in each of the Cardinals’ last four games. He’s also compiled 47 tackles and 14 passes defensed on the season. Peterson has started all 14 games for Arizona and has even seen time on offense in addition to his duties on defense and as a punt returner.

The thought that Peterson is the top cornerback in the league may be a little premature still but through most of his first two seasons in the NFL, the Cardinals appear to have gotten everything they hoped for in taking him with the fifth overall draft pick a season ago.

Talented, but still inconsistent, Seen him burned more than once this year.

Bottom line, not buying it for one minute.

Breaking News: An athlete that has spent their life training and working at their sport believes that they are the best at their position.

Hopefully nobody reads into these comments too much.

  3. chawk12thman says: Dec 20, 2012 1:27 AM

To be the best at that position you have to believe you are. I don’t doubt that the rest of those named herein and many more feel the same as well………What is the news here?

  4. huskersrock1 says: Dec 20, 2012 1:27 AM

Better get off those drugs Patrick.

  5. shotgunnoblitz says: Dec 20, 2012 1:28 AM

Cards might have gotten everything they hoped for taking him fifth overall. Seahawks got a better CB in the later rounds of the draft. Its one thing to say “i think im the best CB in the league” its another thing to prove it. Interceptions are a flashy stat, but you need to do more than that. 7 throws a year that you caught is impressive dont get me wrong… how many passes did the receivers catch?

  6. kliplee says: Dec 20, 2012 1:37 AM

You can thank Neon Deion for the never ending list of corners who self proclaim this title for themselves.

    Thank you!

  7. trefkennedy says: Dec 20, 2012 1:38 AM

Wish the cowboys would have drafted him in 2011 draft

  8. zerophocus says: Dec 20, 2012 1:44 AM

I can’t really speak to the topic at hand because I live in DE and have seen a total of 1 Cards game all year. I just wanted to say thank you for writing “Peterson wasn’t shy with his opinion when he was asked if he believes he’s the best cornerback in the league.” Some other journalists have made it seem like players walk out on their front lawn with a megaphone and declare their greatness instead of being asked about that specific topic in an interview.

  9. lilpuppy says: Dec 20, 2012 1:45 AM

if not now he will be one of the best very soon…but wasting away in a Cardinals uniform is no way to go through a career

  10. balfe13 says: Dec 20, 2012 1:48 AM

“Peterson picked off Detroit Lions quarterback Matthew Stafford to set up the go-ahead score in the Cardinals 38-10 win over the Lions on Sunday.”

lol seriously? A ‘go-ahead score’ in a 28 point game? I mean, technically, yeah, but come on, man!

  11. pshamla says: Dec 20, 2012 1:50 AM

I like players who let their talent and stats speak for themselves. A little arrogance isn’t a bad thing, but a lot can be.

  12. tbd3 says: Dec 20, 2012 1:54 AM

It’s a lot easier to say this while Revis’ ACL is in two pieces.

  13. themackstrong says: Dec 20, 2012 2:09 AM

I would bet money that most people haven’t watched Arizona play or even know they rank 4th on defense versus the pass. Peterson has been playing lights out. I think the wheels kinda fell off that Jennings/Tillman being elite because they have been getting torched since the midpoint in season. Sherman got burned by Stevie Johnson for a TD last game which kinda hurt him after shutting down everybody. I don’t even know if Revis played a snap before he got hurt this year. He is without doubt a top tier talent.

  14. packownsu says: Dec 20, 2012 2:12 AM

He also thinks Kolb is the best QB in the league.

  15. hendeeze says: Dec 20, 2012 2:13 AM

If PP is the best corner in the league, that must make Crabtree the best WR in the league…

  16. seatownballers says: Dec 20, 2012 2:31 AM

Crabtree owned this guy last I saw. Pp is talented, and a probowl kick returner. But when It comes to playing corner he’s 4th best in the league. Imo

  17. Dusty Grey says: Dec 20, 2012 2:38 AM

Seahawks fans are definitely glad you return punts. And am I mistaken, or didn’t Megatron have 121 yards on the day? Or was his mad skills needed to cover the all-world talent of Kris Durham?

  18. ninerswilldominatelikebefore says: Dec 20, 2012 2:44 AM

for all the negativity that michael crabtree gets from other teams fans that dont watch him play hes turning into the playmaker we thought he would and HE OWNS PATRICK PETERSON

  19. dabearsk says: Dec 20, 2012 2:46 AM

I still think Revis island is bigger and badder than Peterson island… Check back this time next year after Revis comes back from the acl… Hopefully Revis has a Adrian Peterson type of recovery…

  20. Max says: Dec 20, 2012 2:54 AM

Hey Patrick, how about you come over to my house for the playoffs. We all can watch all those corners who you are better than compete for the super-bowl.

  21. torontofalcon says: Dec 20, 2012 2:58 AM

He has a lot of skill and talent, so I can entertain and take him serious for thinkings hes number 1, but in reality hes not there yet. Dude is 6’1-6’2 219pds once he puts it together fully, watchout.

  22. thehighhat says: Dec 20, 2012 3:17 AM

Do you think the Cards would have passed up Aldon Smith AND JJ Watt for this shameless self-promoter if the draft was held tomorrow? I think not. He gets burned way more often then he’s picking off passes.

  23. northbynw27 says: Dec 20, 2012 3:18 AM

Best CB on the Cards? Sure. Best in the league? Nope.

  24. denverdougz says: Dec 20, 2012 3:19 AM

Champ is still better than him and 95% of the corners today

  25. malachiofcourse says: Dec 20, 2012 3:23 AM

with revis out it is in’t that far fetched really

  26. johnnycash19 says: Dec 20, 2012 4:17 AM

Didnt Megatron just have over 100 on him? Just saying Tillman did a lot better against Mega than PP did.

  27. swaggyy says: Dec 20, 2012 5:55 AM

I think PP is better overall, but Sherman is more consistent. CBs overall are overrated it’s all about the trenches

  28. drgreenstreak says: Dec 20, 2012 5:57 AM

… on the best team in the league!
Peterson is a prima dona, “me” guy. Arizona has had too many of these clowns and no leader since Kurt Warner left.

  29. azwildcats96 says: Dec 20, 2012 6:16 AM

you’re not the best until you’re covering the other teams best receiver and the qb is scared to throw to him. See Bailey and Revis for reference.

  30. tigertigerwoodsyall says: Dec 20, 2012 7:13 AM

Unless he is the best tackling cb, the best run defense cb, the best at intercepting and an overall team leader, he isn’t the best, yet. Being a fan of the NFC East, I’ve seen a lot of great cb’s over the years. Very few of them excelled in all of these categories.

  31. bishopdon says: Dec 20, 2012 7:21 AM

Calvin went for 121 on him last week. plus he got double coverage help. Deion? I don’t think so!

  32. valentino8100 says: Dec 20, 2012 7:31 AM

Revis is unquestionably the best corner in the NFL. If he had Deion Sanders’ speed, he may have become the best corner the league has ever seen.

  33. trollhammer20 says: Dec 20, 2012 7:34 AM

Didn’t he just fumble another punt?

  34. supremekingz says: Dec 20, 2012 7:41 AM

Peterson is a beast no doubt, but Mochael Crabtree OWNS him every time they play. If the 9ers were more pass happy, Crabs would get 200 yards a game. He consistently makes Peterson look foolish

  35. atwatercrushesokoye says: Dec 20, 2012 7:48 AM

Joe Flacco also believes he’s an elite cornerback, unfortunately for him he mumbles and now his talents are being wasted at quarterback….

  36. 49erstim says: Dec 20, 2012 7:56 AM

Obviously not a Cards fan, but if I were I’d prefer the kid to say he is amongst the best. That leaves some room for improvement. Who was it that said “when you’re satisfied with your performance improvement has stopped.”?

  37. FinFan68 says: Dec 20, 2012 8:06 AM

Very good player but “best”? QBs tend to avoid throwing toward great CBs even if their best receiver is the target. His INT total is high. What’s the ratio?

  38. occamssabre says: Dec 20, 2012 8:11 AM

Lardarius Webb, up until his injury this year against the Cowboys, hadn’t given up a TD to the man he was covering since the beginning of the 2011 season. Thats almost a year and a half without allowing a TD.

    Has Patrick Peterson done that?

  39. ewoods6 says: Dec 20, 2012 8:11 AM

Shut down half of the field for over 12 years in a row, without slowing down and then make that claim……#CHAMP

  40. baned0n says: Dec 20, 2012 8:16 AM

Jennings/Tillman aren’t getting torched. It’s the middle of the defense that is. It’s the bad nickel backs, Moore and Hayden and the Urlacher injury that’s allowing teams to burn them with slants and over the middle passing.

  41. fwippel says: Dec 20, 2012 8:29 AM

Yeah, and he’ll be home watching the playoffs this January.

  42. themagicman1223 says: Dec 20, 2012 8:46 AM

And then people hate Sherman because they say he talks too much… at least he never says he’s the best corner in the league. Funny, he’s playing the best wide receivers but he never shuts them down. Darelle Revis never said he was the best, he let his play do the talking… This guy should do the same. Also this statement is pretty much coming out of nowhere, why would he be saying this now?

  43. pacodawg says: Dec 20, 2012 8:50 AM

They all think they are the best and worth more than they are, they also think they will play forever.

  44. ike1973 says: Dec 20, 2012 9:05 AM

Didn’t Megatron just get 10 catches for 121 yards against him while being the only legit WR on the field for the Lions last week?

    Come on man!

  45. randyschwimmer7 says: Dec 20, 2012 9:06 AM

Sorry, but everyone always forgets one name………….CHAMP BAILEY. Most consistent corner for the past 12 years. No way around it.

  46. tdshouldbeinthehall says: Dec 20, 2012 9:10 AM

I’ll make it simple. No your not.

  47. cromartiesforgottenchild says: Dec 20, 2012 9:13 AM

For my money I’m still taking Champ. He’s a little older sure and may not have the picks (due to the fact that QB’s avoid him like the plague) but his open field tackling and run defense is second to none.

  48. btowngetsdown says: Dec 20, 2012 10:00 AM

PP bragged before the Lions game about how he would shut down Calvin Johnson (it was on PFT). Johnson had like 10 receptions for over 100 yards in that game. Then the very next week PP is saying he’s the best?

  49. getadealdonealready says: Dec 20, 2012 10:17 AM

If you were were then YOU wouldn’t have to tell people, they would already know.

  50. rohinaz says: Dec 20, 2012 12:13 PM

A lot of people are hating on Peterson or just jealous. He is a class guy, gave Megatron nothing but respect before and after the game. He has a fitzgerald like work ethic and wants to be the best in the game.

In the 1st half against the lions, when peterson and megatron lines up 1 on 1. Megatron had 2 catches for a total of 16 yards, no first downs. Peterson at that time had an interception and a pass defended.

throught the game, Stafford went deep with peterson vs calvin about 6 times. Calvin had 1 catch. several of Calvins catches against peterson came when the game was over and they were playing off coverage. Peterson won the matchup that day. He didnt shut him out, but he won. The no.1 offense in the NFL had 10 points.

The only guy who has beat peterson this year is michael crabtree. Crabtree had 2 TDs vs peterson, the only 2 he has given up all season. Peterson was in position to stop both of them, he fell preveting the tackel on 1, the other crabtree made a great catch. Hats off to crabtree.

Peterson hasnt allowed a catch in 4 of his past 6 games. Revis is hurt this year, but based on who is playing right now this year, Peterson prob is the best corner in the nfl. Brian Billick has said it several time already.

  51. weaselpuppy says: Dec 20, 2012 12:42 PM

said interception was also a clear offensive pass interference, with Peterson grabbing Megatron’s inside arm, spinning him out of the route and grabbing the pass where Calvin would have been. Of course, the ref never saw it, but on replay it’s as plain as day….

And here comes B. Marshall on Sunday, should be fun.
