Texans plan to out-do Cowboys with even bigger video boards

Jerry Jones AP

Look out, Jerry Jones. The Houston Texans are planning to take your title as the owners of America’s largest HD TV.

The Texans plan to install two new video boards at Reliant Stadium, each bigger than the famously enormous video boards at Cowboys Stadium — and bigger than any other video boards in any other sports stadium, anywhere.

“Our game experience is consistently rated as one of the finest in the world and these spectacular video boards will help us elevate to an even higher level of performance for our fans,” Texans President Jamey Rootes said, via Dave Zangaro of CSNHouston.com.

The screens, which are the size of more than 3,000 40-inch TVs, are part of Houston’s improvements to Reliant Stadium as part of the city’s effort to be chosen as the Super Bowl hosts in 2017.

Everything’s bigger in Texas. And Texans compete for who has the bigger one.

  2. daysend564 says: Dec 20, 2012 6:18 PM

If you accomplish it, it’ll be the only thing the Texans are better at than the Cowboys.

  3. smackingfools says: Dec 20, 2012 6:20 PM

Get you a bigger one Jerry and send the old one to UofA.

  4. baywatchboy says: Dec 20, 2012 6:20 PM

    Charlotte Motor Speedway is bigger.

  5. zoellner25 says: Dec 20, 2012 6:21 PM

Everything really is bigger in Texas, including egos about stupid video boards.

  7. dinklespiel says: Dec 20, 2012 6:27 PM

Both are just trying to compensate for inadequacies elsewhere.

The Houston Texans are now Americas Team.
Jerry has reduced a once proud , tradition rich franchise, to just another mediocre franchise.

Houston is the favorite son of Texas now, the darlings of the Lone Star State.

The Cowboys have become the the stepchild of Texas.

  12. beretta96d says: Dec 20, 2012 6:33 PM

Neither one of them have a qb who’ll get them to the superbowl, might as well scrap it out over their tv’s.

  13. daysend564 says: Dec 20, 2012 6:46 PM

Texans have played just a couple of decent teams this seasons and got their doors blown off in each of those games.

AFC teams will just be there to polish the trophy as they hand it to ANY of the NFC teams that make it to and destroy them in the Superbowl.

  14. profootballwalk says: Dec 20, 2012 6:48 PM

Funny thing – when fans at the stadium see a replay showing that their guy really did fumble the ball, they never shout ‘Give it to them!’

They must have money leftover from the funds they used to buy those god awful letterman jackets. Meanwhile, the patriots and other serious teams are focusing on trying to win Super Bowls. Not host them.

  23. thetooloftools says: Dec 20, 2012 7:15 PM

  24. bluebongzilla says: Dec 20, 2012 7:24 PM

Wow, two winning seasons in a row for the first time in franchise history in that awful division and they think they’ve accomplished something worthy of note. The Houston Texans have some serious franchise envy. Houston is a cesspool, by the way.

I’m a 49er fan so I have no horse in this race but I do live in Austin and I do hate the Cowboys. Unfortunately, that’s not the case around here. Whenever they both play at the same time on the same network, Dallas is shown 100% of the time and Houston gets bumped. It hardly ever happens but when it does, that’s how it is.

  28. wolfpack152 says: Dec 20, 2012 7:57 PM

At least Houston has a home field advantage. In Dallas’s palace for people who “just want to be seen” according to Troy Aikman, visiting QB’s can do a hard count on the goal line!! Talk about sad.

  29. seahawks4alltime says: Dec 20, 2012 7:59 PM

Why not just build a dome that the roof doubles as super-jumbo-tron. …and install nice comfy recliners so people can just lay down and look up.

  31. 4ever19 says: Dec 20, 2012 8:12 PM

  32. eyeh8goodell says: Dec 20, 2012 8:12 PM

Stupid. It’s funny because for so many years the NFL struggled to differentiate the game experience from the home viewing experience in order to get people to the games. Now, they’re trying to make the stadium experience as close to the home viewing experience as possible. If i’m going to watch the game on a big HD screen, i’ll just save my money and do that at home.

  33. randallflagg52 says: Dec 20, 2012 8:13 PM

I really can’t stand all these high-tech fancy stadiums. Not just in football but in baseball. Give me a Lambeau Field or a Camden Yards over Jerry’s world or that monstrosity they built in Miami for the Marlins any day of the week.

Just give people what they want, the game, in the purest form. It’s always better.

  34. devinmr711 says: Dec 20, 2012 8:21 PM

One day the Texans will become so big that Texas will realize they only need one true football team and the Cowboys will relocate to Las Vegas.

  35. texan1979 says: Dec 20, 2012 8:42 PM

I bet they arent placed in the feild of play where punters frequently target them either.

  36. ttommytom says: Dec 20, 2012 8:45 PM

I would never even fly over Texas, let alone visit the place.

  37. soforizo says: Dec 20, 2012 8:46 PM

This is the way to go. Right along with transmitting in-stadium with FM audio TV coverage of both the game and halftime. They can substitute the commercials for all I care, but at least this way one can contribute as the 12th man and not miss the benefits of the TV broadcast.

  38. rg3andthensome says: Dec 20, 2012 8:52 PM

GOOD! Add a bigger screen…Maybe then Jerry can show up and watch his group lose in style on a really big screen…Not some Hack TV put into that new dump.

  40. edhochuli says: Dec 20, 2012 9:05 PM

    @htfan

Who’s jealous? I live in the heart of Texas and I can tell you Texans fans spew Cowboys hatred more often than Cowboys fans even mention the Texans on probably a 10:1 scale. It’s almost like they’re seeking big brother’s nod of approval.

  41. edhochuli says: Dec 20, 2012 9:14 PM

One more thing, “enjoying the success” of any team other than your own is the very definition of a band wagoner.

As a 49ers fan in Texas, I’m enjoying this Cowboys and Texans rivalry. If Texans can steal some fans from the cowboys, I’m happy. And I don’t think Cowboys fans are jealous of Texans so much as they just hate their own team at the moment.

    ====================================

So let’s get this straight. The new America’s Team has an all time 77-97 record and two less playoff wins than Jerry Jones has Superbowl rings and four less playoff wins than the number of Lombardis that Dallas has all time. Eight NFC championships and, despite a decade+ of weakness a 456-338-6 record. Mmmmkay, “Kathy” haha.

    ===================================

It’s a foreign concept to Houston and Philly fans, but in Dallas only a Superbowl win is considered a success. So I’m not sure what we have to be jealous of. Win this one, which you won’t, and yeah we’ll be jealous.

  51. jskill3 says: Dec 20, 2012 10:26 PM

The Texans, however, will be bright enough to put the screens where they won’t block punts…..

  52. allidoiswin55 says: Dec 20, 2012 10:27 PM

  59. therealjr says: Dec 21, 2012 12:39 AM

Texans dreamers, reality check please. There are three franchises that can smack talk with the Cowboys and they are the Niners, Steelers and Giants. Win multiple titles with different HC and different QB. Sure Dallas is kinda up and down now, but what are you going to fall back on when you get rolled in January?

PS – I’d like to include the Raiders the above group, but the statute of limitations may have run out after being godawful for so long.

  60. therealjr says: Dec 21, 2012 12:40 AM

PPS – Pack fans, you can have at it as well.

  61. billsboy88 says: Dec 21, 2012 12:40 AM

  62. starfan79 says: Dec 21, 2012 12:44 AM

Yeah, the one punt that did hit it was done on purpose. It had a total projected distance of about 30 yards.

Personally I hate the big monitor.. It’s hard to watch the actual game… I can watch TV at home with really cheap beer

  63. joetoronto says: Dec 21, 2012 11:35 AM

Texas, where they still believe bigger is better.

    SMH.

  64. davekva72 says: Dec 21, 2012 11:36 AM

Well, the Texans should have plenty of space to hang giant screens. They don’t have any of those pesky Championship banners taking up valuable space.

  65. philgrek says: Dec 21, 2012 4:58 PM

As a cowboys fan from Dallas, living near Houston, let me tell you that texans fans have the biggest case of franchise envy imaginable. It’s complete little brother syndrome. Texans fans justify any of their success against the Cowboys failure. It’s surprisingly quiet if the Texans win if the Cowboys win, too. This video board nonsense just continues the one sided “rivalry”. Meanwhile, cowboys fans hardly recognize the texans even have a franchise, seeing as how they haven’t beat the Cowboys since their Super Bowl victory against them (aka their very first game) 11 years ago. And for the record, the only positions the texans have the advantage are on the lines on both sides of the ball. Think Andre is better than Dez? Andre has had 5 years with 5 or less Tds….Dez? All 3 years with at least 6, and Andre has NEVER matched Dezs td total from this year (his third).

  66. dallascowboysdishingthereal says: Dec 23, 2012 11:04 AM

Jerry Jones on the phone now trying to locate larger boards.

Strange how you have to get really big TVs in a stadium to get fans to not stay home and watch on TV.
