Henry Melton: No defensive tackles are better than me

Bears defensive tackle Henry Melton’s contract expires after this season and he’s put himself in position to cash in with a big payday with his play this season.

Melton has been stout against the run while continuing to provide strong pressure in the passing game of Chicago’s defense. That’s left him feeling awfully good about where he stands in the league.

“We’re still playing the 4-3 … there is not another better D-tackle in the league than myself,” Melton said, via Brad Biggs of the Chicago Tribune. “I feel like that.”

Geno Atkins of the Bengals (or those who have watched Atkins this season) might disagree with that assessment, but Melton’s got every reason to feel good about the work he’s turned in over the last couple of years. Whether he’s franchised or works out a long-term deal, it’s very difficult to imagine the Bears letting him go after this season.

There are more important issues on the table right now than Melton’s future contract, though. First among them is his health heading into Sunday’s absolute must-win game for the Bears.

Melton missed last week’s loss because of a clavicle injury and the Bears could really use his presence against the Cardinals this weekend. Melton has been able to participate in practice the last two days, which is a good sign that he’ll be able to play and continue staking his claim to the top spot in the league at his position.

  1. One of the best players you rarely hear about. His ownership of the middle of the line lets Peppers stunt with whatever moves strike his fancy and gives blitzers the lanes they need. The Bears had better step with this guy, or use the dreaded fanchise tag, or someone is going give him his payday.

  2. Melton has played very very well, but Atkins is indeed more disruptive, misses less time to injury and is basically superior to Melt.

That’s no bust on Melt — just huge ups to Atkins, considering how well Melt has played.

Also, Ngata plays the 3-4 — but he’d been just as much of a wrecking ball in any 4-3. Ngata is another monster.

And no, Detroit – Suh does not belong in this conversation.

But Nick Fairly does belong. Guy is a beast Suh gets all the attention but Fairly is a stud out there.

  4. Nothing wrong with the guy feeling like he’s the best at his position. Sounds like he is definitely Top 2/3 in the league for sure. But I’d say Atkins has it wrapped as the best D Tackle in the league. Dude is a stud.

  5. Suh is a beast. Not the best but way better than any d lineman on bears besides peppers. I wish ppl would stop hating on him for stupid calls. Guy is a great player and anyone thats a fan of nfl would take him if he didnt have the tude all the time

  6. He’s mos def in the conversation. To think this guy was recruited to Texas as a RB? I remember the Bears letting him return a kick off during his rookie pre-season.

The guy is a freakish athlete still learning his position.

  7. Yeah, Watt is a DE stud with LB skills. I think Atkins is better for sure. And Wilfork is definitely a monster, but Melton has 1 less tackle and FOUR more sacks. They both have two FF for the year.

  8. Lions homer here: I agree, Suh doesn’t belong in conversation, but one guy who could easily be front and center in this conversation next year is Nick Fairley. Not many guys possess the raw ability he does, including Suh.

But how come when Vick thinks he is the best at his position he always gets criticized ?

  10. Difference is between Atkins and Melton is Melton can move around on the defensive line because of his skills and size to dominate any Oline in the league while atkins does it from one position but truly Atkins is a monster but despite the difference in the injury department the best DT certainly goes to Melton.
