Jim Harbaugh upgrades Justin Smith from doubtful to questionable

AP

On the official NFL injury report, 49ers defensive lineman Justin Smith is listed as doubtful to play in Sunday night’s game against the Seahawks. But 49ers coach Jim Harbaugh is a little more optimistic than that.

Harbaugh told reporters at his press conference today that the team views Smith’s status as questionable.

Smith suffered an elbow injury on Sunday against the Patriots, and in his absence he showed just how important he is to San Francisco’s defense: The 49ers largely shut down the Patriots in the early part of the game while Smith was on the field, and then the Patriots scored 28 points in 15 minutes with Smith sidelined.

The only game Smith has missed in his NFL career was the first game of his rookie season, the result of a lengthy contract holdout after the Bengals chose him with the fourth overall pick in the 2001 NFL draft. He has played in 185 consecutive games since then.

  1. He’s not going to play…
This is just Harbaugh trying to be cute…
    To bad though…
Wanted the 9er’s at full force when the Hawks slap them around Sunday night!
    ‘GO HAWKS!’

  2. I think Seattle has this in the bag. They almost beat the 9ers earlier, on the road, and Russell Wilson wasn’t playing half as well as he is now.

Also not sold on Colin Kaepernick (or however you spell it). I don’t think that gimmicky stuff will work against a defense like Seattle’s.

  3. When you’re facing a team that’s just as good as the niners then you need all you’re players on the field especially the most dominant player on the niners defense Justin smith. Not to mention they’re facing arguably the most physical runner in the game. We need smith in the game if we want to come out of Seattle with a victory. I still like the niners chances to win but definitely a lot harder without smith in the game. This is the most important game so far of the Harbaugh era and in my opinion the toughest game for these niners since Harbaugh took over. Can’t wait for Sunday night!

  4. Why are Seahawk fans so arrogant and big-mouthed?

Yes, the Seahawks may win but do you Hawk fans REALLY think you’re going to blow out the Niners?

    Based on what?

Wishful thinking, obviously. It ain’t going to happen.

Going to be physical, low scoring, and a close game.

  5. Love how the Suckhawk fans are all over this praying he’s not going.

Ricky will step up, even if Smith is out. Niners got this a lot more easily than people realize this. Mark my words.

    Seattle is overrated. Period.

  6. Yeah Smith is questionable but a loudmouth cheater like Sherman is still a possible to play..makes sense. Well see if Seattle. “Slaps ” SF around

  7. This Seahawks fan wants Smith in the game. It will be a great test for the Hawks, if they hope to get into and advance in the playoffs. I honestly have no idea what to expect as an outcome in this game, but one thing is certain-I don’t see either team lying down and it should be hard-fought battle to the end.

  8. Why do so many fans feel the need to trash the opponent and their fan base? I am a huge Seahawks fan, but I can acknowledge that the Niners are a great team. This is just the first of MANY great battles that will take place between them over the next decade.

How impressive is it if your team beats an”overrated” opponent? Whoever wins this game will be able to say that they beat a quality team.

  9. first we’ll talk patriots …it was a change to a semi-prevent zone defense that N.E. scored on in the second half and when the 49ers went back to their base defense N.E. was shut down once again ……now on to the seahawks …..hawks fans are in for a crushing defeat sunday night….sure 50 pts vs the bills and the cards. looked great but your not gonna put 10 on the 49ers this week . hawks only chance to make the playoffs is with help by other teams losing ….division ….no chance….and dont be to surprise the 49ers put a 50 spot on your hawks and their little QB ……it will be the “Whats your deal ” part two….

  10. I’m a Seahawks fan and in all honesty I think the 49ers have a solid football team with some great players. I just wish their team plane would have a really rough landing so they are all hurt a little bit for the game on Sunday.

  11. How long has it been since the hawks beat the Niners?!! Sea chickens are a good team but their fans are idiots. You haven’t won in TWO YEARS, win then talk trash…

  12. ‘Hawks win big while the nation cheers, restoring faith in the economy, and establishing permanent peace in the middle east. A surprising side story emerges as Harbaugh injures his lower lip while pouting and complaining about the lack of calls. Harbaugh will be out for week 17 to rest his ego.

  13. I think this game comes down to the kickers, and if I was a 49ers fan I would be nervous about that. Akers is a little shaky right not. But being from Philly and watching him every week during most of hi career I know he is money in big games. This game should be a classic. I don’t care if you are a 49ers or Seahawks fan you know this may be the best game of the year.

  14. Except you failed to mention the game ending sack by his replacement, Rickey Jean Francios. He is a starter on 25 other NFL teams. But keep hoping though. Just watch them smash the Sea bags and silence the 12th man.

  15. Justin Smith better play because I don’t want to hear any excuses when the Hawks take down the 49ers. I think they are a good team, a bunch of bandwagon, no knowledge fans – I barely remember any Go Niners talk when you were in the basement of the NFC West.

  16. Seattle fans are amusing. They act like the Seahawks have 5 Lombardis in the trophy case rather than being perennial losers.
    ———————————————————–

I know this will get negative comments, but we are talking about Sunday. Not the great niner teams of the past, not even the team that played this year. We are talking about week 16 on the schedule. Those trophies have NOTHING to do with this week.

  17. Weren’t seahawks gonna be the 13th day of Christmas bird before someone said “Enough birds already! The next bird I wanna see better be carved and bathing in gravy!”

Who cares, Jim Harbaugh is still a whiny little girl.

Looked in a mirror at all in the past year? Every single day you WHINE about Harbaugh.. get a life and move out of Mommy’s basement

  19. Seattle is piping music into their speakers for the game this weekend, again. 12th man, more like 12th loudspeakers

  20. @ lionsdraftguy harbaugh is no worse than schwarz he just embarrased him and ur lions a couple times thats all not even trying to talk trash like u do about my 49ERS

  21. Turnovers will be the key to this match-up. The Seahawks are a solid up-and-coming team and this budding rivalry will be fun for years, but this match-up and the division belong to San Fran.

You mean the same gimmicky stuff that Wilson runs right?

Seattle hung tough in SF but the Niners offense is much more dynamic now than it was then too. Love the guy that said the Niners need all their players because they’re going up against a team just as good. Last I looked the Seahawks had fewer wins, and the only reason they have a shot at the division title is because of the worst call in NFL history.

  23. “Hairbough is just trying ….”

    ___________

I really do not get in any manner how that is some sort of slam. It makes no sense. If you’re going to make a joke on a guy’s name……..there has to be some content that makes sense. “Hairbough” is what a 2nd grader does while putting the magnets together on the fridge. It’s cute but makes no sense one way or the other.

  24. I’m glad Sherman is playing too so the sorry Seahawks fans won’t cry foul that their top ADHD corner wasn’t playing when old man Moss catches a 50 yard bomb for a touchdown.

“Also not sold on Colin Kaepernick (or however you spell it). I don’t think that gimmicky stuff will work against a defense like Seattle’s.”

    —————–

Do you mean that “gimmicky” stuff like throwing 4 20+ yard bread basket throw touchdowns in front of a national audience in sleet/rain. THAT gimmicky stuff? Or is it the two 50+ yard runs he’s ripped off or the 61mph (!!) fastball he tossed to Crabtree??? Let’s just think about that statement.

Btw…….Wilson runs the EXACT same gimmicky stuff………

  26. I expect a close game with Seattle winning at home. Dallas could get knocked out by the Saints; should be close. Giants should beat a Ravens team in disarray. Vikings could give Texans a hard time, but I’d still go with Houston. Steelers in a tight one over Cincy. Let the games begin!

  27. Even if the Seahawks should win, the rubber match comes in the playoffs if they make it to playing SF again and that game will be the one that matters and it’ll be played at Candlestick. So this is not anywhere close to being the game of the year nor really matters that much one way or the other.

Are we talking about 2007 Randy Moss or 2012 49ers Moss with 23 catches 360 yards and 3 TD’s in 15 games? Lay off the Kool Aid
