obviously you can’t read. did you see the post right before this one? where Johnson breaks the record for most 150+yd games. or tying Michael Irvins 11 straight games with 100yds. or most consecutive games with 10+ catches. and to all the haters saying its a sham of a record because of garbage yards. what’d you want the lions to do, hand it off? or just lay down and give up? In 95, Jerry caught 122 passes for 15.1 YPC.
With one game to go, CJ’s caught 117 passes for 15.8 YPC.

steve young only played 11 games during jerry rices record. elvis grbac played 5 game.

calvin johnsons record doesnt even compare to jerry rices.

Enough about how consistent Jerry Rice was. Sure Calvin is much more physically gifted. So you hold that against him? Fact of the matter is… He catches passes that Jerry would have never had a chance at because he is that dominate. Ask any QB who they would rather have to throw to and if they used their brain they would say Calvin. Calvin has the physical gifts to bail a QB out when they throw a bad pass. Every other player on the Niners offense back then was a weapon. Defenses couldn’t key on Jerry. Don’t get me wrong, as of 2012 Jerry is still the G.O.A.T. But I don’t think this will even be a debate in, say, 2015. Calvin is just starting to hit the prime years of his career. Either way, congrats Megatron! Go get that 2000!

I enjoyed Gruden’s view on the record–good for Johnson,but so many of the yards came in meaningless games. It’s a shame Johnson plays for a terrible franchise. Making the playoffs last year was a fluke for this awful team. He will make plenty of money and rack up plenty of yards playing with a QB that throws 50 times a game, but if he actually wants to win then he needs to get out of Detroit.

Everyone says that, but never realizes that, going into this year, 1995 produced the #1, #2, #6, and #13 all time highest total (Jerry, Issac Bruce and Herman Moore, Michael Irving)

If you consider “this era” to begin in 2009 – when the defenseless receiver rule was added and the Brady Rule was clarified- or in 2006 – when the Brady Rule was put in the books – only 2 of the top 10 best receiving seasons have happened, both by Calvin.
Andre Johnson’s 2008 and 2009 seasons, and Wes Welkers’s 2011 season all rank between 18 and 20th all time.

Not a very good argument that today it’s easier to accumulate yards receiving.

I like what Gruden said about it…”Johnson’s record is tarnished by meaningless yards in a losing season.” I agree. When Jeryy Rice did it there wasnt all these rules to protect guys and Rice wasnt afraid to go over the middle. Rice also was scoring and winning SuperBowls

Congratulations Calvin Johnson! What a great accomplishment!

…but for anyone to call him greater than Jerry Rice, they must have not been alive or not watched football when Jerry Rice dominated.

Much respect to Calvin Johnson, but as long as he plays for Screech Schwartz with Sidearm Stafford as his QB, he will never eclipse Jerry’s greatest “record”, 3-0 in the Super Bowl.

I respect Calvin Johnson, but a lot of what he accomplishes is due to his measurables. Jerry Rice didn’t have anywhere near the measurables of Megatron and is the vastly superior WR.

Would love to see Mega’s numbers if he was only 6″2 and ran 4.71.

Dude are you really going to diminish what this guy did this year? Alot of players at that position are tall and fast. None come close to this guy. He is consistently double teamed and theres times I saw him catch that ball with 3 guys on him. Jerry Rice will probably tell you this guys the best he has ever seen too. I dont see how Jerry Rice is vastly superior I dont really see a flaw in Johnsons game.

Calvin Johnson, Larry Fitzgerald, and Andre Johnson are todays top receivers in the NFL. (Ya I know there are up and comers) These are not the old diva receivers we have seen in the past. Pure class acts. Happy to see what these guys bring to todays NFL.
