Cam Newton bumps official, gets away with it

Oakland Raiders v Carolina Panthers Getty Images

The Panthers are trying to hang onto a 14-6 lead over the Raiders, and they’re lucky they still have their quarterback on the field.

Cam Newton was penalized for unsportsmanlike conduct, after popping up from a play and bumping into referee Jerome Boger. By rule, he should have been ejected on the spot.

He’ll certainly be fined, after what’s been a chippy day all around between the Panthers and Raiders.

Earlier in the game, Newton wasn’t penalized when he kicked at Raiders defensive tackle Tommy Kelly after a sack. Bumping a ref will bring that one into sharper focus, and takes something off what had been a sharp run of play for Newton.

You can’t play favorites. Cam should have been ejected if it happened as stated above. The official should be disciplined severely as well as the referee (assuming he wasn’t the one involved)

Before you speak – watch the play. He was slammed into the ground in contact made AFTER the ball was well out of his hands and directly in front of the ref who did not call it.

You would be mad if it were your quarterback too

  3. jawnyblaze says: Dec 23, 2012 3:59 PM

You’re kidding right? The contact was accidental, he was just trying to yell at the idiot ref who has been atrocious the whole game…both ways. Horrible calls for both teams. The “bump” was barely a brush. The ref wasn’t even moved, he just leaned back.

Slammed into the ground? Get out of here. He got hit and threw a hissy fit. He didn’t itentionally bump the ref Magic Johnson style but the rules don’t account for that. Shoulda been bounced.

Yeah. Cam kicks at Tommy Kelly. Tommy Kelly tosses Cams foot off of him. Refs call penalty on Tommy Kelly. Typical.

  6. war27 says: Dec 23, 2012 4:03 PM

Call or no call on the play he intentionally bumped a ref.

    That’s an auto DQ.

Cam was being a wuss the whole game..there was no reason for kelly being flagged, HE DIDN’T DO ANYTHING! Cam was lucky he didn’t get penalized for the kick..which was also in front of the referee I might add.

ref put himself between the two players. 15 yards is not getting away with it

It doesn’t matter if its a slight bump. Those are almost always caught. It’s not like that rule was made because refs were getting punched in the face.

considering all the bad calls in this game, this one isn’t even top 5

How is it that you have this job? No where in the NFL rule book does it say that a player MUST be ejected from the game

  13. captainspangled says: Dec 23, 2012 4:48 PM

those of you saying he should have been ejected automatically have no idea what you’re talking about.

It’s explicitly stated that it’s left to the discretion of the official to make a move based on whether he felt the contact was malicious or not. Jerome Boger, the head ref, said it wasn’t malicious. It was incidental contact. Some of you are just nutjobs who want blood because it’s Cam and you predetermined before the draft you didn’t like him. Or Raiders fans angry because you’re team hasn’t been relevant in a decade.

You must not have watched the game. He did not intentionally bump a ref. He was yelling at him and UNintentionally brushed into him.

You should add the Cam Newton kicks Tommy Kelly in the face and gets away with it. Directly in front of an official.

Worst officiating crew in the NFL. I understand that a game like this shouldn’t get a top crew, but this crew should not even be employed. Period.
    The replacements were far better.

I’m not angry about it. Kelly getting a flag for taking a kick by Newton pissed me off, though. I haven’t seen Newton play much, but he looked real immature out there today.

how about that rolling to his right off one foot dime to smitty in the endzone? how immature did that look?

That was a nice play, but I didn’t say he didn’t make any nice plays. Don’t be so defensive, Nancy. Hell, Leinart had a couple of nice throws. I was speaking to Newton’s lack of composure, not his ability.

The kick to Kelly’s face was very unsportsmanlike and it blows my mind that only Kelly got flagged for unwisely retaliating. I like Cam, but that was a dirty move by him and the refs made a big mistake only flagging the Raiders for that play. Cam got away with one that time, and as much as I hate to say it, he deserves to be fined for it. It was just about as bad as the Suh stomping from last season.

    CONTACT—GAME OFFICIAL

    (g) Unnecessary physical contact with a game official.

Note 1: Under no condition is an official to allow a player to shove, push, or strike him in an offensive, disrespectful, or unsportsmanlike manner. Any such action must be reported to the Commissioner.

Any violation of (g) (above) may result in disqualification and also will include discipline by the Commissioner. An official must see the entire action for a player to be disqualified.

There’s a good reason Cam didn’t get tossed. The idiot ref leaned in toward Cam when he saw Cam’s momentum carrying him backward. He was looking for a reason to throw a flag. Jerome Boger is an incompetent, brainless idiot who has no business on a football field – any football field. Bring back the scabs.

As far as the Kelly-Cam thing, Kelly got called because he gave Cam an extra shove as Cam was trying to get up, Cam threw a leg at him. Shouldn’t have been a flag on either of them. But again, there’s a stupid, brainless idiot running the officiating crew.
