Ravens take AFC North with convincing win over Giants

Getty Images

Both the Giants and Ravens came into Sunday’s game hoping to wash the bad taste from Week 15 out of their mouths.

The Ravens were the only one that succeeded. Joe Flacco played as well as he has all season one week after a poor performance against the Broncos and the Ravens cruised to a 33-14 win that made them the AFC North division winners for the second straight season.

Flacco was 25-of-36 for 309 yards and two touchdowns before giving way to Tyrod Taylor in the fourth quarter. Flacco’s best work came on third downs as the Ravens converted 11-of-17 of them to enjoy a huge edge in time of possession. They only scored nine points after the break, but they used up almost 15 minutes on two of their field goal drives and the Giants defense couldn’t mount any kind of resistance. Ray Rice had 158 yards from scrimmage, Bernard Pierce ran for 123 yards and the Ravens rolled up 521 yards of offense on their way to the win.

That’s a bit more like what they were hoping for when they made the move to Jim Caldwell at offensive coordinator.

That was almost 400 more yards than the Giants managed on another bad day for Eli Manning and company. There was no running game, the pass protection was not up to par and the Giants wound up running just 45 offensive plays all day. You wouldn’t have thought that things could have gotten worse after last week’s 34-0 loss to the Falcons, but the Giants did their very best to convince you otherwise on Sunday.

They still have playoff hopes, although it’s hard to make a case that they deserve them after the last two weeks. Winning won’t be enough for the Giants now, though. They’ll need help from others if they are going to get another chance to make an unlikely run to the Super Bowl.

  1. Can’t spell Karma without M-A-R-A.

What a great Christmas present. 2 weeks in a row the overrated Giants get absolutely embarassed and manhandled on national TV to fall out of the playoffs.

I hope the Giants fans and their conniving cheating owner have nice comfy seats to watch the 2 teams that they cheated fight it out for the NFC East championship next Sunday night.

To mr. wright, bigbluefan, gcsuk, and all the rest of the Giants fans who were talking about “repeating”.. Merry Christmas! Hope you enjoy watching the playoffs. I’ve said from the beginning – Giants finish 9-7 and out of the playoffs. No fluke run for you this year.

  2. Some say you can’t spell ELITE without ELI.

In the immortal words of the great Inigo Montoya: “You keep using that word. I do not think it means what you think it means.”

  3. Ravens and Bengals moving on from the North. Not sure how the Ravens should handle that game next week.

Browns should consider their season a mild success.

Steelers are welcome to wave their pom poms from their couch to support the two division teams that are definitely better than they are.

  4. Replying to skins23, where do you get the idea that the Giants owner cheated? where did you get your facts? Can you offer an APA citation, if you even know that one is?
Also in responding to ripster65, when people said you cannot spell ELITE without ELI what that meant is what it said, regardless, Eli is an elite QB. the whole Giant team is struggling. When the secondary stinks and the defense does not protect Eli, of course he gets sacked. I remember John Elway used to go through that with the 1980s Broncos. Also, when Cruz, Hixon, Nicks, etc do not catch the passes, one cannot blame Eli. It is so easy to blame one person. The whole team is struggling.

  5. When the league suspends Ed Reed again for another cheap shot, is his suspension going to get overturned by appeal again?

  6. In all my years of watching football I never seen a team target a corner like I seen the ravens do to Webster today I don’t think they target rookies that much !

  7. Ravens have owned the AFCN. Ravens have outperformed the division rivals two years in a row now, soak it up folks.

  8. Can’t remember the last time I was this embarrassed by this team. To lose is one thing, losses happen. To absolutely not show up is unacceptable.

O-line stunk all game. Bradshaw can’t block to save his life. Defensive line, another no show.

Not hanging this one on Eli, as he had no time. Ravens caught absolutely EVERYTHING thrown their way. Baltimore took them to house, and won flat out.

Congrats Baltimore on the win. Congrats Washington on the division crown (assuming, but a pretty safe bet at this point).

  9. Give Redskins fans a taste of what it’s like to win after 20+ years of humiliation and it goes straight to their heads LOL

After 2 SB’s in 5 years, I’m content to let the Giants stink it up now and then. Happens to the best of them.

  10. Not suprised by this win by the Ravens..Giants aren’t that great at all. Also Ravens have lost 3 in a row..They aren’t going to lose 4 in a row plus Mr Inconsistent Flacco,..com’on u gotta expect him to bounce back at some point..I won’t be suprised if Flacco falls flat on his face in the playoffs..he’s not getting his money yet for a reason..

  11. Maybe next season, after the schedule comes out, Mara can order his buddy Roger Goodell to take some salary cap away from some of the AFC teams the Giants will play next year – in addition to what he advocated for against the Skins and Cowboys. And maybe he can have those penalties announced in the middle of the draft. Every little bit helps when trying to get the New York Giants to slip into the playoffs again.

Mr. Mara, I hope you enjoy watching the Redskins and Cowboys play a meaningful game next week while your team watches helplessly hoping for a miracle. Happy New Year!!!

  12. Probably the worst officiated Ravens game I’ve seen all season, including the horrible Philadelphia game.

How do you overturn that TD pass to Jones when he turned and dove with the ball in his hands and the ground caused the fumble AFTER the ball crossed the plane?!? They overturned it AFTER review which makes it even more of a headscratcher!!

  13. Oh, edithpiaf, Baby John, from his perch high above mere mortals on the “Competition Committee”, stole $36m from the Redskins and $10m from the Cowboys so he could ensure “competitive balance.” In his mind that term means decimating your division rivals using the machinations of the Mara Football League.

His assertion was that the Redskins and the Cowboys did not play nice by adhering to the owners unspoken agreement to engage in collusion against the players. The league office approved all the contracts at the time. No one heard anything about this until Baby John unleashed his attack on the eve of free agency – not only crippling the caps of the two teams, but doing so at the last minute so the teams could not set strategy accordingly.

No one knew of this agreement to engage in collusion until then. Certainly the players’ union was unaware. Baby John could openly flaunt anti-trust law because the union waived its right to sue about such matters, and he felt that Snyder and Jones wouldn’t go “Al Davis” and sue the league.

Baby John’s grave concern for “competitive balance” did not extend to other teams that acted similarly to the Redskins and Cowboys or to the bottomfeeder franchises who spent no money to be competitive. No, this discipline was meant for NFC East challengers to his Giant empire. It was a crass, transparent power play. Only the football gods can stop this.

Hopefully Mr. Rooney will rein in his in-law when he returns from Ireland. Baby John is a petulant, self-important, entitled pox on the league. Wellington Mara rolls over in his grave. Hail!

  14. Meanwhile, edithpiaf, enjoy watching the Redskins and the Cowboys battle for the NFC East championship this Sunday! Perhaps
Baby John will have you over to the house for the game. You can carry a tray of hors d’oeuvres, can’t you?

  15. Flacco beat the Giants and the Referees. Amazing. I wish we still had the replacements, at least they won’t try to throw a game like these refs do.

  16. Congratulations to the tee shirt champs…soak it up because its your cotton Lombardi…from one of many steeler fans. You are what your record says you are..we are bad, but this is rare for us and uncomfortable..so tell me raven fans how do deal with failure seeing as you are more experienced?

  17. As I said in another post, I’ve never been more ashamed to be a Giants far. When you lose to a better team and you played your best, that’s one thing. But playing like you don’t care? You’re heart’s not it it? Then why even bother playing football?

The Giants put their fans on an emotional roller-coaster every year. And they wonder why we’re all on Xanax. 🙂

Oh, and Ravens fans? Your mediocre team beat a good team that just didn’t care. Enjoy the playoff berth as you’ll be one-and-done.

  18. Go ahead and doubt/hate. Ravens have as good a chance as anyone in the playoffs. Just ask last years giants.

  19. Alot of bitterness on here…as I said before I respect real Steeler fans not ones who take every chance to jump on here a troll around. Its all good. By the way I repsect the Giants they are one of the good guys…To the dude who said we beat a better team that didnt care that makes no sense. I doubt they didnt care Im sure they want to make the playoffs…anyway lets see what happens…

I agree, that overturned TD was a head scratcher, and I was livid even as a Giants fan. But there were bad calls on both sides. The “offensive pass interference” on Domenik Hixon? Fine, call it, but then call it on Torrey Smith and Anquan Boldin as well. Call what you want, but just make sure that the calls are equal. And no call for roughing after Eli gets thrown to the ground 4 seconds after he threw the ball? Or the “we whistled the play dead so you can’t challenge” fumble.

Giants would NOT have won the game anyway, so I’m not blaming the refs for the loss. But this year has been as bad as I can remember for the officials.

  21. This game proved once and for all that the Ravens will win the Super Bowl and that the Steelers are old, washed up, and have a interception machine as a quarterback.

I can tolerate losing, but NOT CARING? Not caring when a win keeps your dwindling hopes of repeating alive? Pathetic and unacceptable.

  23. @kattykathy – you are funny. The Bungles have just had winning seasons twice in a row for the first time in 30 years and you say they are “still the class of the AFCN.” I laughed so hard my hot cocoa blew out my nose!!

and luckyarmpit – no reason to be a poor loser. you lost to better team today. a team that has made the playoffs now 5 years in a row and have YET to have a one and done. And if you think the Dolts are coming in with a rookie QB and beating us at home, you are dreaming. Maybe with Peyton Manning, but not with Luck.

Rare and uncomfortable? How about old and rebuilding. Not even you can say things are looking up for the steelers, they’re done for the next 4 years.

  25. Boo hoo giants fans. Almost a whipping like our SB win.
    And
Steelers suck and it is not getting any better in the next few years.
Get rid of Haley or for Raven’s fans keep him
    Your O is Pathetic.
    Maybe next year Boys

  26. Wow, edithpiaf51, you really are some kind of douche bag. An “APA Citation”? Really? John Mara went to the media with his trumped up case against the Redskins and the Cowboys and, not satisfied with salary cap penalties, wanted draft choices withheld from these teams both within in his team’s division. All this because the Redskins and Cowboys refrained from participating in their fellow clubs’ practice of collusion. Phrase it anyway you wish, Dan Snyder and Jerry Jones made their own money and call their own shots. John Mara made his fortune the old fashioned way – he inherited it. One can only hope karma visits him severely.

…….. I see so Eli gets the built in excuse but when we say the same about Romo people just continue on with the blame. Point being…take your lumps as they come. The QB always is responsible for all wins and losses no matter what is going on with the rest of the team…

  28. Those two whooshes you hear are the Ravens fans exhaling and the air coming out of the Steelers playoff balloon.

It’s a week-to-week league. Except for those teams whose season has ended.

  29. I love how Redskins fans after a decade or more of being a doormat in the NFC have something to say.

As for the Giants, I think it is time for an overhaul on the coaching staff maybe even Coughlin. You can only give the same rah, rah speech so many times. We got a lot of vetern with no heart. Suggs is out there playing for the Ravens and can barely use one arm. Tuck didn’t even suit up and Philips hasn’t played in weeks.

Gilbrides play calling has become so predicatable. How many times have we tried to run a direct snap to a running back and lose yards.

We have the worse linebackers in the NFC East maybe the NFC. Fewells defense has never been one to dominate games. In Buffalo his defenses were below average and the Giants have sucked since he took over for Spags.

  30. killdrive goes, fewell goes, webster def goes, tuck, bradshaw, osi all go.. resign bennett, cruz get a good draft pick when philly rolls over the embararrassment uninspired regular season play you call the giants under coughlin and come back strong next year..

we def need some vocal leaders in both sides of the huddle that we havnt had since strahan

  31. As a diehard Steelers fan I must say it has been a tough season. Sometimes I’m baffled at some of the decisions Mike Tomlin makes, like the FG attempt near the end of the game. But at least I can say he carries himself with class unlike the crybaby Harbaugh from the Ravens. He makes me sick with the way he acts like a total whiner, him and his brother. Congrats Ravens on your AFC North T-Shirts. That’s about all you’ll be winning.

  32. After watching a pathetic lifeless end to the Giant’s season, it really leaves me more impressed with the consistent excellence of the Patriots. And as much as I like Eli, his passive leadership is the reason why the giants aren’t on that level. He doesn’t have Brady’s or Kobe’s death stare that demands his teammates meet his level of commitment. He’s great in the clutch but Eli is not wired to be a leader of men.

Having watched the fiirst the nfl, then the afl and nfl, and finally the nfl I can say things are looking up for the steelers. You young keyboard cowboys are what have you don’t for me this minute type fans . Short on patience, loyalty and a sense of the big picture. If you look at the last forty years the steelers have done alright I would say and judging from the hatred we generate a lot of others wish their team was as good over time. Even if your prediction of four years were to come true it ain’t but a little thing in the grand scheme of things. Enjoy your brief fleeting moment of fame…and hope it last as long as the steelers!

  34. Eli and Big Ben are hot/cold QB’s. They can be very clutch at times, but in no way do they compare to the consistently great QB play of Peyton, Brady, or Rodgers. Jim Plunkett won 2 SB’s and nobody can take that away from him, but nobody considers him an all-time great, nor should they consider Eli or Ben all-time greats. Not sure where the Giants go from here, I’m just happy as hell my Packers won’t have to see them again this year.

  35. Its absolutley amazing how a win against a bad team makes all the morons in b town think they are contenders.

Ravenator- how can u say ravens owned the afcn? They struggled with pis urghs back up, and lost to theor thirs string. And had trouble with cincy.

Flacco is not elite, he just beat a very bad team. To bad he couldnt do it last week, or the week before, or the week before!

    One and done in playoffs!

And for the love of god, stop thinking they are better than they are, denver and or new england is going to s .

  36. I thought for a minute there I was the only one that caught Katty Kat’s or whatever the hecks her name is, comment. The bengals are the class of the AFCN? It’s been a 2 team division for years now, and the bengals weren’t one of the 2 teams. And the one and done comment was hilarious also, I forgot who posted that nonsense. Everybody knows who follow football knows it’s not about who has the best record in the regular season, it’s about who’s the HOTTEST team going into the playoff and the Ravens been there 5 yrs straight. No other team can say that right now and if we’re looking at week 16, this team looks HOT. We’re not impressed just being in the playoffs so I’m hoping we’re peaking right now and become that HOT team like the Giants were a year ago and the packers were the year before that. There was another comment that named Flacco “Mr inconsistent”. You may call him what you want, but what is consistent is the Ravens making the playoffs every year! Happy Holidays

  37. oxsfannings, there is no reason to use terms like douche bag. that demonstrates how intelligence. flaming and making insults helps no one. your points in your post are well taken but without the insult.

    gurnblanstonreturns

it is very easy to blame the QB, but the whole team is at fault.

  38. If you set your sights just to get in and think five years in a row is great then you are the new Vikings and bills of yesterday year. Cotton tee shirts and a hat will never match a Lombardi , but to each their own…just saying.

  39. We have the worse linebackers in the NFC East maybe the NFC. Fewells defense has never been one to dominate games. In Buffalo his defenses were below average and the Giants have sucked since he took over for Spags.

    ———————————————————————————–

BTW they had the worst LB’s last year too. How’d that turn out. Stop whining!!

Also where is that puke stain nohopeleft? Can’t ever find him when they lose.

  40. Well here is another die hard Giants fan that will never run when things are not going well. Ravens deserved to win, no doubt about it and New York can blame nobody but themselves.

I am the kind of guy that deals with reality, if your not good enough or don’t play well then you don’t deserve to go to the playoffs.

But I will say this to all the haters out there, I have personally seen my team win 4 Superbowls and beat an undefeated team in one of them, if they never make it back to the big game I can at least die in peace knowing our history was awesome.

Football is not the only, thing in life, I have a beautiful 6-month old daughter and plenty to look forward too. Remember there is only one happy team at the end of the year while everybody else us fighting for a draft pick.

Merry Christmas…and have a great New Year!!!

    All In…

  41. I’m a Giants fan. You other giants fans need to chill. you expect to win every year?Am I disappointed? Sure I am.

To call out Eli and Coughlin now that they have lost and are probably out of playoffs after you were probably singing their praises and toying with dreams of a dynasty is INSANE.

They gave you two super bowls. How many fans can say the same about their teams?

What I’m trying to say is: RELAX. Temper your highs and lows.

  42. Giant suck from a Giants Fan. Corey Webster, Jayron Hosley, here are your pink slips, you may have wanted to wait for the end of the game to leave the field instead of phoning it in from home.

  43. I hope you idiots get the Colts and your old coach Pagano and our old coach Arians send you packing. You guys should be the fourth seed just due to winning the division but there are 4 or 5 other teams in the AFC playoff picture better than you. REALITY will set in fast. Bengals and Ravens gone in first round. If it ends up being the matchup then go Bengals. Will cheer for colts or texans to go to super bowl from AFC although a denver vs colts AFC championship game would be quite the story line!

  44. steeler fans & Raven doubters/haters making all these bold predictions. You do know how foolish you’ll look if The Ravens win another playoff game? Is that all you got?
